Abstract:Richard Maynard of Copyhold Farm at Hamsell in Rotherfield was the eldest son of John Maynard (d.1592) of Mead Farm in the same parish. He was a substantial yeoman farmer with interests in at least two farms, and in addition derived considerable income as an ironmaster. Shortly before 1603 he rebuilt Copyhold Farm which in that year, together with his other lands held of Rotherfield Manor, were enfranchised. He also held a lease of Birchden Farm valued at his death at %pound;30. He was one of a number of joint occupiers of Old Mill Furnace in Mayfield but his interest there may only have been as a feofee of John Baker the owner. He held Birchden Forge of Baker, who had purchased it in 1617 of the Earl of Dorset. It is also likely that he had some business connection with Hamsell Furnace in Rotherfield, owned by the Dyke family into which his son married. He died 12 January 1619 and was buried at Rotherfield the following day, leaving a son Richard then under age. On Richard obtaining his majority in 1623, an Inquisition Post Mortem was held on the father at Horsham, 20 August, and Richard declared heir. Three years later, in 1626, Richard married Mary, daughter of the ironmaster-rector of Frant, William Dyke, and died 29 October 1631 aged 29 leaving two young children Elizabeth and William Maynard.

It was stated that this may have been a unique case, but recently a further case brought under similar legislation over a hundred years earlier has been found. At the Chichester Sessions held 11 and 12 April 1670, a complaint was made to the justices as follows: "On the complaint of Abel STEPNEY of [West] Chiltington, clerk, late curate, that he wants a present habitation for himself and his family, the overseers and churchwarden are ordered to provide the same until further order to the contrary."

Paupers could be buried in the parish where the Union Workhouse was situated, they could be returned to their home parish or, in cases where the body was unclaimed by relatives, they could be disposed of at the discretion of the governors of the Union Workhouse.

Preview:From early in the 13th century until the first quarter of the 16th century there existed on the eastern edge of St Leonard's forest to the northeast of Horsham and a couple of miles southwest of Crawley, a parish with a church that has almost been forgotten. The former parish of Shelley extended in a narrow strip north-south and was probably that area which later became known as Crawley detached and which today is part of Crawley parish. It covered Shelley Plain, a narrow piece of land sloping down to a valley on each side - deriving its name from scylf and leah and which gave its name to both the area and a family surnamed Shelley - and extended as far north to what later became an estate called Buchan Hill near Ifield and which today is Cottesmore golf course. Its eastern boundary would seem to have been to the west of the old Brighton Road (A23) bordering an extended tongue of land belonging to Slaugham parish and what must have been the western part of the parish has now been absorbed in Lower Beeding along with the reputed manor and Shelley park. There is evidence that like Ifield and Crawley it lay within the Archdeaconry of Lewes in the 13th century but Shelley's later association and possession by the POYNINGS family of Slaugham has led to much confusion as to exactly under which jurisdiction it lay in medieval times. In 1824 Cartwright's map indicates that the eastern part of the old Shelley parish had been absorbed by Slaugham.

The Vienne family in Sussex, by Michael Burchall, published June 2011 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 19 no. 6, article, pp.279-286) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 15860] & The Keep [LIB/508847] & CD SFH40 from S.F.H.G.
Preview:The medieval knightly family of VIENNE that was prominent in Sussex in the 13th and 14th centuries has received little attention in the past. A number of county histories have included mention of the family; more recently, Dr T P Hudson has dealt with the family's holding of Cudlow manor, and I have published a short study of Sir Peter de VIENNE as sheriff of Surrey and Sussex.
Edward Hasted suggested in 1798 that the VIENNE family originated from Vienne in Dauphine but it is more likely, in view of the family's early connection with the family of St JOHN of Halnaker who came from St Jean-le-Thomas, Manche, arr.Avranches, that the family originated from Vains, Manche, arr.Avranches, cant.Sartilly.

1826-1850 Sussex Criminals and Victims, compiled by Michael Burchall, published 2013 by Parish Register Transcription Society (Ref: SCV9, CD-ROM) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/507812]
Abstract:Calendared CD extracted by Michael J Burchall FSG of Quarter Sessions at Chichester, Horsham, Lewes and Petworth from records in East Sussex Record Office. Detailed abstracts listing the Charge, Offenders, Victims, Jurors and the Verdict with the Punishment. It has many more cases than the two CDs covering earlier periods though the same price. The series has up to a quarter of a million names and is word searchable to find a person, crime, location or date etc. An invaluable reference tool for local and family historians and other researchers of this quarter century when Sussex was rapidly changing from a mediaeval to a more modern administration.
Rusper Priory: A Medieval Sussex Benedictine Nunnery, by Michael J. Burchall, published December 2013 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 20 no. 8, article, pp.366-370) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/508979] & CD SFH40 from S.F.H.G.
Preview:Very little is known about the small nunnery that was founded by the family of De BRAOSE in the parish of Rusper on the Sussex/Surrey border in the mid-twelfth century and dedicated, like the parish church, to St Mary Magdalene. In 1852 Albert Way contributed an article to Sussex Archaeological Collection and in 1907 Louis Salzmann added some further information. Other authors have made similar, but smaller, comments. The family of De BRAOSE, who had held the Rape of Bramber from about 1070, were small benefactors to the Cluniac Priory of Lewes, the Benedictine Abbey at Battle and the Premonstratensian Abbey of Dureford, all great foundations, and founded the Benedictine Priory of Sele in Beeding parish following a disastrous attempt to found a priory at the gate of their castle at Bramber about 1070.

1552 Sussex Lay Subsidy, compiled by Michael J. Burchall, published 2014 by Parish Register Transcription Society (Ref: SXLS, CD-ROM) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/508011]
Abstract:Transcribed by Michael J Burchall, FSG, from the original records in the National Archives, together with an Introduction and Surname Index as well as Search Instructions and Links to other Websites. Men (and a few women) are listed with their Assessment and Payment which is totalled for each Parish. This tax replaced the earlier relief in Edward VI's reign and was the fourth payment in 1552 of the original tax of 1549. It was levied on goods worth more than Ten Pounds for native-born and double that for foreigners. Aliens (and denizens without moveable goods worth between 20 shillings [£1] and £10) were assessed and paid 12d (pence) in the pound (5%) or a poll tax of 8d per head if they did qualify on moveable goods.
1696 Association Oath Rolls for Sussex and Cinque Ports, compiled by Michael Burchall, published 2014 by Parish Register Transcription Society (Ref: SXOR, CD-ROM) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/507893][Lib/507894]
Abstract:A full transcript of all the Sussex (and Cinque Ports) men who signed an Oath of Allegiance to King William III in 1696 following an attempted assassination. Men (over age 20) including clergy are listed in the place they signed, and only 5% signed by mark. Michael Burchall has transcribed all these signatures from the originals at the National Archives and he writes a full historical introduction and gives a potted biography of major office bearers. Sussex is one of the first counties where names have been abstracted. These Oath Rolls of 1696 fill the gap between the Hearth Tax Lists of the 1660s and the Land Tax Lists of 1785 (extracted by the Sussex Record Society).
1556- 1694 Sussex Church Court Deponents, compiled by Michael J Burchall, published 2014 by Parish Register Transcription Society (Ref: SXXDPN, CD-ROM) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/507813][Lib/507814]
Abstract:The archives of the Sussex Church Courts are most interesting for local and family historians. Cases (known as Causes) could be brought by individuals or by direct summons from the court. Cases covered tithes, church repairs, pew allocation, probate, morality, matrimony, clergy responsibilities and even bewitching. Michael J Burchall FSG has extracted from the original records in West Sussex Record Office details of people who made depositions which include name, trade, age, birthplace and residences.

The CD lists the Owner, Occupier and Rental, parish by parish.
John Stone: A Sussex Tyburn Victim, by Michael J. Burchall, published March 2014 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 21 no. 1, article, pp.20-22) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/508980]
Preview:On Wednesday 11 May 1715 a Sussex man named John STONE was executed by hanging at Tyburn, near modern day Marble Arch in West London. He had been brought there in one of the three carts from Newgate Prison along with seven other prisoners to suffer for various crimes committed in London and on the scaffold admitted that he had also stolen a silver tankard about two years previously for which David WILFORD had been tried. The carts had been accompanied by the Ordinary of Newgate who, after prayers, the recitation of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer, watched as the carts were drawn away from under the six condemned men and one woman and they were left to die by slow strangulation.
The Early Stophams of West Sussex, by Michael J Burchall, published June 2014 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 21 no. 2, article, pp.56-61) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/508981]
Preview:The medieval knightly family of STOPHAM derived from the village of that name in West Sussex. The earliest references are to a Ralph de STOPHAM who was the first witness to a charter of Reginald de WINDSOR, (dapifer to Henry I's widow Queen Adelizia and her second husband William D'AUBIGNY, Earl of Arundel) while he was holding the honour of Petworth, giving the church of Petworth and others to Lewes Priory about 1140. Ralph de STOPHAM also appears sometime later as third witness of Walter de DUNSTANVILLE III's gift of land at Newtimber to Lewes Priory. He or his son Ralph II was a pledge in 1194-4. Ralph was probably the father of Ralph II and Hugh de STOPHAM who before 1190 were witnesses to a deed of his overlord Alan la ZOUCHE. These acts of witnessing were common for knightly families but at this period we have no knowledge of the lands they held other than perhaps that of Stopham manor. The family's later more extensive land holdings over three counties derived from two fortunate marriages.

Abstract:To celebrate the bicentenary, Michael Burchall has transcribed another annual Land Tax for West Sussex, following his previous one for 1805. Full details have been transcribed from digital copies of the handwritten returns at WSRO on over 300 pages and indexed with a useful historical Introduction. Since 1973 Michael Burchall has been transcribing Land Tax returns with other SFHG Members which were published in early editions of the SFHG Journal "Sussex Family Historian" and included East Sussex places from Albourne to Brighton until the enormity of the project overtook them.
Hanged and Gibetted 1799: The Drewett Brothers, by Michael J. Burchall, published March 2015 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 21 no. 5, article, pp.215-217) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 15860] & The Keep [LIB/508855]
Preview:On Saturday 13 April 1799 two brothers, William and Robert DREWETT, were hanged for mail robbery on Horsham Common and their bodies were gibbeted on North Heath Common near Midhurst near to the place where the offence had taken place. A part of their story has previously appeared in print: in 1871 a short notice of these events was published in Sussex Archaeological Collections, volume 23, pp.214-5; and Kim Leslie gave more information in Sussex: Tales of the Unexpected (2008), pp.63-65. The purpose of this short article is threefold: to give more details of the two men and their families; to comment on the events; and to correct some errors in the two earlier articles.

Preview:In the 1930s William ALBERY (1864-1950) of Horsham made copious extracts from the Sussex Assize records 1560-1800 in the then Public Record Office, London. He made use of these extracts in compiling his Millennium of Facts of The History of Horsham and Sussex 947-1947 which he finished in 1939 but owing to the Second World War this was not published until early in 1947. He used the war years to bring his original work up to date, finding a Saxon charter of 947 that enabled him to write a selective history of Horsham covering a thousand years. ALBERY's 270 pages of notes were typewritten in two copies: one remains in Horsham Museum and the other was given in January 1946 to Brighton Reference Library and has now passed to East Sussex Record Office. It is this latter copy which has been used to make this present work.
