Review by G. D. J. [G. D. Johnston] in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1968:
This is a most interesting and informative work well written in a style easily followed by a non-technical reader and the Author's death is a great loss. He traces the history of the Forest and the perpetual feuds and disputes, law-suits and enquiries between the owners of the soil (usually the Crown or its grantees) and persons having rights of common in respect of the produce of the soil and (later) the general public. There are also chapters dealing with plant and animal life. It must have involved a large amount of research amongst archives. A copy should be possessed by everyone in the district or having connection with the Forest including for recreation and those merely passing in mechanised transport. By a slip the loss of Calais under Mary I is (p. 19) given 30 years later than the accepted date.
