Abstract:The Diaries of Sarah Hurst records the day to day life of a young woman who lived in Horsham, Sussex between 1759 and 1762. Consequently, this book can claim to be one of the most important sources of information on life in the 18th century. The Diaries of Sarah Hurst not only create a vivid portrayal of the local town's people they also provide a fascinating insight into the social history of women, as they contain the intimate thoughts and feelings of a young woman and her relationships with the people around her. Sarah's intimate diaries can't help but touch the reader as she writes about her love for Henry Smith, a man who was thirteen years older than her.
Review by Sue Berry in Sussex Past & Present no. 121, August 2010:Diaries can tell us much about how a person sees his or her world and when they can be linked with others of the same period or close to, even better - for one person's view of a time, person and place may be very different from another's. Sarah Hurst's diary predates that of John Baker of Horsham but they knew the same people and this Susan Djabri uses well to show how the two writers had very different views of the same people. Sarah's diary is of the same date as Thomas Turner of East Hoathly who, like Sarah, went sea-bathing along our coastline. The difference in their approach to going bathing is a comment on the difference between the lifestyle of the affluent Hurst and the struggling Turner as well as their personalities. Both diarists are from businesses. Sarah expects to help in her family's shop but also writes poetry and has a lively social life as many urban Georgian women did. One would like to know why she was so secretive about her marriage, not telling her family until afterwards. The diary ends before that story unfolds.
Many women like Sarah worked in businesses in Georgian England and a considerable number ran their own. The formidable Mrs Dring of Brighton ran a shop and a lodging house, Isabella Pullen built her own. Their role is understated in most Georgian studies but a start has been made in Hannah Barker's The Business of Women - female enterprise and urban development in Northern England 1760-1830, Oxford University Press, 2006. Diaries such as this with the excellent background research by the editor, street directories, inventories, wills and other sources should help us to understand the role of women in Georgian Sussex.

Abstract:In Horsham Through Time 19th and 20th century photographs from Horsham Museum's archives have been matched with those taken recently by members of Horsham Photographic Society, now in its 60th anniversary year. These show how many of Horsham's most treasured buildings have survived and found new uses. Horsham's ancient parish church, castellated Town Hall and medieval burgage houses remain largely unchanged alongside modern shopping centres in Swan Walk and Pirie's Place, while other old buildings have been adapted for office or residential use. Some former streets have disappeared under the dual carriageway, built to relieve damaging traffic congestion, but an exciting new public space has been created in The Forum, where the history of Horsham and its surrounding district is imaginatively portrayed on a giant sundial.

Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian vol. 19 no. 2, June 2010:Part of the research undertaken by people looking for ancestors is to visit graveyards - we wonder what did our ancestors look like and what did they do during their lives?
This attractively produced booklet takes us on a journey through Denne Road cemetery in Horsham, now declared a site of nature conservation interest, a quiet and beautiful place today and a green oasis near the heart of a busy town. It opened in 1852 after St Mary's churchyard became full and in 1856 was the only permitted town graveyard when other, non-conformist, graveyards were closed. There is a very interesting history of the cemetery from its beginnings up to date and the information on its development gives the reader a social history of Horsham and highlights the lives of individual past inhabitants, some of whom are buried there. There are excellent photographs of people, gravestones and life in Horsham over the 19th and 20th centuries. A comprehensive index of people mentioned in the book, as well as those whose gravestones are shown, will be of great help to anyone researching their family history.
An excellent publication invaluable to anyone interested in Horsham burials.

Preview:I have some unpublished memoirs and a number of letters from my uncle, Norman WELTON, to my mother Marian - his younger sister - telling of his experiences at the Front during the First World War. Though many of the letters are written in a light-hearted tone, they reveal a good deal about the conditions in which the soldiers lived, the terror of heavy shelling and my uncle's feelings about his friend, Charles TREGLOWN, who had been killed. There is also a vivid account of his experiences in combat, as part of General Sandeman Carey's 'force', hastily assembled to plug a gap in the line in March 1918. Norman was posted to Sussex when the war ended. I have added some notes on useful websites that can be used to find further information about the First World War.
