The Story of Architecture in England, Part II. Post Reformation, by Walter H. Godfrey, F.S.A., F.R.I.B.A., published 1931 (London: B. T. Batsford Ltd.)
Review in Sussex Notes & Queries, May 1931:
A most useful and interesting book on that portion of English Architecture which , after a period of neglect and contempt, has come into its own, of recent years. Starting with Tudor times it carries on the story to the period of the Regency of George IV.
It is full of excellent illustrations and the letterpress will lead the reader to a full appreciation of the dignity of the buildings which are described.

Review in Sussex Notes & Queries, August 1933:
This excellent publication is packed with authentic information and well illustrated by good photographs of all the important buildings. A clear sketch map of the town occupies the centre of the book, and plans of the Castle and Priory Ruins are also included. The Borough of Lewes has a Publishing Committee, who are to be congratulated on having Mr. W. H. Godfrey as their Editor. Not only has he a wide knowledge of architectural history extended far beyond the bounds of Lewes and Sussex, but he has that personal interest and affection for his subject which can only be attained by the dwellers within the precincts.
Mr. E. G. Bedford, another well-known Lewes man, has supplied all the photographs (except one of oxen by Mr. J. A. Sharpe) and has also contributed the chapter on the Natural History of the neighbourhood.
The advertisements deserve a word of comment for Mr. E. F. Harvey has illustrated some of them in a refreshing manner.
Altogether Lewes has set a high standard for Town Guides.

Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1936:
The latest Church Guide to be published under the auspices of the Sussex Archaeological Society is that dealing with the little church of Southease in the Ouse valley between Lewes and the sea. Its distinctive feature is its round tower. This, Mr. Godfrey dates as early 12th century, the oldest part of the existing building. The history of the Church, however, goes back to Saxon times and an early mention of it is made in King Edgar's charter to the Abbey of St. Peter, later called Newminster and afterwards Hyde Abbey, at Winchester. This charter, dated 966, is a prized possession of the British Museum and is generally on exhibition in the corridor under the clock. Mr. Godfrey has reproduced a leaf from the charter which contains the reference to Southease and also to the neighbouring church of Telscombe. Being written in thick gold it does not come out as black as if written in ink, but the words 'ecclesia sueise' will be found at the end of the fourth line from the bottom, the last two letters 'se' running over to the beginning of the third line, followed by the word 'titelescumbe' (the old form of Telscombe) in the second line from the bottom.
Mr. Godfrey refers to two memorial stones in the Church. A further account of one of them, Dr. Edward Boughen, occurs on p.52 of the present number of S.N.Q.
The wall paintings are fully described and with a picture of the Church and a list of Incumbents as far as known, make up a very excellent booklet, well worth the modest 6d

Review by F. R. Williams in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1950:
By the publication of this new guide to St. Leonard's Church, Seaford, a long felt want has been satisfied. Hitherto there has been no authentic guide to this interesting church available for visitors to study and take away. I use the word "authentic" advisedly because many weird and wonderful attempts have been made by ill-informed residents to explain the archaeological features of the building. Proud parishioners have been known to point out to visitors the "Norman" west doorway - a feature which Mr. Godfrey clearly shows in this excellent little guide to have been added in 1893! In 1937, the late Dr. J. W. Taylor published his excellent book on this church, but this was too costly, and too bulky for any but the keenest enthusiasts to take away among their holiday luggage. Now, thanks to Mr. W. H. Godfrey, acting for the Society, we have in handy form, a clear, concise explanation of the history of this truly remarkable church. For the very modest price of sixpence one can thus obtain a full understanding of the many interesting details of its construction and development. Mr. Godfrey, however, in his modesty, does not tell us that the present fine condition of the fabric is entirely due to him. An architect of the restoration undertaken just before the war, he has renovated the building, secured its safety, whilst retaining all its interesting features. These features include the unusual method of building the tower inside the Western-most bay of the Northern bay and the unique carved capital in the South arcade. In such an excellent booklet one can find little to criticise, but many of us are disappointed with the photograph of the exterior of the church. A better position from which to take the photograph could surely have been found, but I understand that this was not of the Editor's choosing.

Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1951:
In this Guide Mr. Godfrey has been assisted by the late Mr. O. H. Leeney and the plan has been made by Mr. W. D. Peckham. It is a very interesting account of a very interesting church. The Rector held a sinecure and his only duty was to appoint a Vicar, and lists of these two Incumbents are given since a Rector in 1200 and a Vicar in 1223 and include Cardinal Pole (Rector, 1526-39) and Francis Salisbury, the Vicar in 1697, who was executed for coining. Most of the fabric is of the 14th century, but suffered much damage by a fire in 1576, when new roofs, including the fine one in the Chancel, were built; the Tower had to be rebuilt after the gale of 1936. The Caryll Chapel on the east of the south transept was built in 1610, but soon afterwards secularised and finally abandoned in the mid-19th century.

Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, August, 1950:
This is a fine Church mainly rebuilt it the 14th century with a 13th century north aisle and still retaining its Norman south door with a good west porch and a fine 14th century tower - an unusual feature in the District and conspicuous in the surrounding country. The Guide well maintains the high level of the Series and the interesting notes on the Local Families is a welcome development. Kirdford - the largest parish in the neighbourhood - has two Chapels-of-ease, Ebernoe (now served by an adjoining Rector) and Plaistow which has a history going back before the Reformation. The list of Vicars shews that since 1558 more than half (viz. 15) held office less than 10 years; on the other hand three held office for 42 years, 38 years and 37 years respectively-but one wonders how many of those between 1660 and 1830 ever resided in the parish?

Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1950:
This is another of the admirable series edited for the Society by Mr. W. H. Godfrey, F.S.A., and to say that it attains the standard of its predecessors is to give it the highest possible praise.
At first a Chapelry in the parish of Mayfield, a Vicarage was endowed in 1291. Mr. Godfrey thinks part of the original Chapel remains in the Tower. The present Church - mainly 14th century with a fine 15th century stone porch and room over - is a large one with two side Aisles to the Nave. Its position near the iron works of the River Teise is demonstrated by the numerous fine cast-iron memorial slabs dating between 1617 and 1799 and including several to the well-known Barham family of Shoesmiths all of which are carefully recorded.

Guide to the Church of St. Mary, Sompting, edited by Walter H. Godfrey, published 1951 (Sussex Churches No. 16, pamphlet, Sompting Parochial Church Council) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 4940] & R.I.B.A. Library & West Sussex Libraries
Review by S. S. F. in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1952:
Sompting is one of the more distinguished of our Sussex churches, and Mr. Godfrey's new Guide supplies a long-felt need: a description of the church which is both authoritative, sensibly illustrated and reasonably complete. One is struck by its masterly command of language no less than by the clarity of its deductions. The booklet starts with an historical introduction and then proceeds to a detailed description of the architectural features area by area: a logical plan but having the drawback on the spot of compelling frequent visits to the outside and back, yet probably more sensible than conducting one twice through time, inside and then again outside the building. The Saxon tower and carvings are probably Sompting's chief glory, but the "South Transept", attributed to the Templars is scarcely less interesting. With regard to the carvings, the fragments of frieze should be described as "below" (rather than "over") recesses behind the altar, and it was disappointing to see the line block of part of this frieze printed upside down perpetuating its present position over a recess in the north wall. With regard to the Templars' Chapel, there is a blocked square-headed door-arch seen in the outside face of the east wall of the sacristy which needs explaining. The booklet contains six well-chosen photographs and a standard plan of the building; and it also has lists of fittings and memorials, and of the vicars, as far as they are known, since 1180.

Guide to the Church of St. Nicholas, Brighton, edited by Walter H. Godfrey, published 1951 (Sussex Churches No. 17, pamphlet) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 6523]
Review by A. D. in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1952:
Recent restoration of the old parish church of St. Nicholas, Brighton, has been entrusted to Mr. W. H. Godfrey, who has just brought out in connection with the work, an admirable little guide to the church which forms the seventeenth pamphlet on Sussex Churches, printed by the Society. There has been surprisingly little written about St. Nicholas apart from old and unreliable books like Erridge's History of Brighton, and nothing which gave details of R. C. Carpenter's restoration of the church in 1853-4 and the later work by Somers Clarke. St. Nicholas cannot have been an outstanding church at any time, though it contains a priceless treasure in its early 12th century font, but so much history has passed round and through it that it is filled with interesting associations which make up for some of its architectural deficiencies. Mr. Godfrey notes all these as well as describing the fabric. The booklet is a valuable addition to the literature of the architecture of Brighton.

Review by D. Macleod in Sussex Notes and Queries, August, 1951:
To mark the passage of fifty years during which the Sussex Record Society has published fifty scholarly volumes containing records and documents relating to the County this Society has exuberated into a Jubilee Volume which is sure to appeal to the general public.
Probably for the first time no less that 191 most attractive drawings selected from the Burrell Collections are reproduced between the covers of one volume. And a most delightful collection they make. All are eighteenth century drawings by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm and James Lambert, who have given us the most fascinating views of the parish churches, mansion houses, castles and historic ruins as they stood in their day, with a few views of Sussex towns and villages such as Eastbourne, Hastings, Jevington and Rotherfield.
Appropriately enough to the occasion the introduction to this volume by Mr. L. F. Salzman gives in brief outline the story, of the Sussex Record Society from the summer of 1900 when its formation was first mooted to the present day, From this story emerges the fact, which if it is not a record is none the less notable, that Mr. Salzman took his place as a member of the first council of the Society elected in February 1901 and has continued to serve on the council ever since, being now one of its two literary directors, and in that capacity he has been largely responsible for this charming Jubilee Volume.
On this occasion the Society has relaxed its rule and non-members can purchase a copy of this volume on application to the Assistant Secretary of the Sussex Record Society at Barbican House, Lewes, for £2 12s. 6d., and it may be said that any who may buy this book may congratulate himself on having obtained a striking collection of eighteenth century views most admirably reproduced. The Society may well congratulate itself on this work and on its fine series of publications, regularly and punctually produced in spite of steadily rising costs of printing. Perhaps the Sussex Archaeological Society may also admit to some pride and satisfaction in the work of the Society of which it is the parent.

Review by I. D. Margary in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1953:
It is very fitting that the Guide to this church should have been produced so soon after that for Sompting, for both of them present the chief glories of Saxon architecture in the County. Save that the apsidal chancel was restored in 1871 in the original style and a tower added, the whole building as we see it is a perfect and complete specimen of a cruciform Saxon church of the tenth century. It contains the original magnificent semi-circular chancel and transept arches, three fine Saxon windows with central pilaster shaft, the original lofty entrance archways, and on the outer walls the vertical pilaster strips of "long-and-short" masonry, with string-course above, so characteristic of the period. All this and much else is, needless to say, most lucidly explained by Mr. W. H. Godfrey. The Guide includes details of the fittings (the fine carved pulpit dated 1557 comes, oddly enough, from Worth, Germany), and a list of the memorials, no less than fifty including the windows. Six illustrations add greatly to its attractiveness, though a better view of the south exterior might have been worth attempting. This issue ought to encourage members to revisit this unusual church, not nearly so well known as its architectural importance warrants.

Review by F. R. Williams in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1953:
Members of this Society are, by now, familiar with the high standard of research and scholarship in Mr. Godfrey's little guides to some of our Sussex Churches, and this one - the 19th of the series - is no exception. Rodmell Church, largely owing to its many alterations and restorations through the centuries, has always been a difficult building to interpret, but the author has made the story of this delightful small Norman church perfectly clear. His theory of the re-use of old material from the demolished Priory of Lewes, answers many difficult questions. There is a very good list of interesting fitments and monuments - a new feature in these guides, I believe. On the first page there is a slight slip - probably a typing or printer's error. Reference is made to "St. William de Wych, Bishop of Chichester," this should, of course, be St. Richard de Wych. Photographs illustrating the book are very good. Altogether a booklet of great help and interest to lovers of our old churches.

Review by G. D. J. [G. D. Johnston] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November, 1955.:
This is another of those admirable little guides edited for the Society by Mr. W. H. Godfrey and no higher praise can be given than that it is well up to the high standard of previous guides of the series. The Church is mainly a reconstruction of 1853, but the tower dates from 1507 and there is some 12th century work still remaining. There is an unusual feature in this guide due to the parish now including the former parishes of St. Nicholas, East Angmering (united in 1593, whose church was only sixty yards away from the remaining one) and Bargham (in the Downs), whose last Rector was appointed in 1524 and whose church is now being excavated and was recently visited by the Society. There are historical notes on these two former parishes.

Review by G. D. J. [G. D. Johnston] in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1959:
This is No. 21 in the Society's series of Church Guides and (as would be expected from the Editor's name) fully up to the very high standard of the previous Guides. In addition to the historical introduction and architectural description, there is a list of the "Fittings" (including a Communion Cup of 1567); and of the Monuments and Memorials (the oldest being to Thomas Turner 1671 with an illegible slab which may be to Constance Mawse 1598 and the fine wall monument to Henry Poole 1580) and of Rectors and Vicars (the earliest being in 1090) which indicates absentees and pluralists.
