George Ambrose Wallis and Other Agents of the Dukes of Devonshire in Eastbourne, by Tom Hollobone, published 2015 (58 pp., Eastbourne Local History Society) accessible at: Eastbourne Heritage Centre & Eastbourne Local History Society
Abstract:
Illustrated with prints and maps, it is a 58 page piece of sound research about some of the most important men in the town's 19th century development.
It includes a wealth of new information, particularly about George Wallis, Eastbourne's first mayor, and his brother, William Lumb Wallis, who together were responsible for the parades and promenades, Upper Dukes Drive, the Devonshire Baths, many fine houses and much beside. But also about Henry Currey, the architect, and other who played a significant role in the building of the town that we know.
