Reverend William John Humble-Crofts was born William Humble on 9th December 1846 in Sutton Scarsdale, Derbyshire. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford where he took Holy Orders. A first-class cricketer, he became one of the leading batsmen for Debyshire from 1873 to 1877. He changed his name to Humble-Crofts in 1879 and became vicar of Clayton-cum-Frickley, Yorkshire in 1881. In 1882 moved to East Sussex and became rector of Waldron where he remained in this living until his death on 1st July 1924 at the age of 77.
