Abstract:
The milling of grain using natural power sources has focused on the windmill and water mills operated by the flow of rivers and streams. A certain romantic nostalgia has developed around buildings that survive and the equipment used. Coastal mills, operated by the ebb and flow of the tide, though fewer in number, played an important role in the milling industry however. The damage from pollution caused by the generation of power from carboniferous energy sources is now realised, and a greater appreciation of the value of natural sources of power has resulted, leading to the construction of wind towers in recent years to generate electricity, and the consideration of various schemes to harness tidal power.

Abstract:
Living and working around the Sussex coast and countryside for over 50 years the author often glances up at the South Downs to ponder upon the old cart tracks and byways that decorate the slopes. These tracks seem legacies of a distant past but are not always that ancient and many date back only to the period of WWII when the Downs were commandeered by the Army for the South Downs Training Area. At this time slumbering Sussex villages and countryside were transformed for all manner of exercises, communications, camps, gunnery practice, prisoner of way camps, emergency airfields, decoy sites, stores and dumps.

Abstract:
Of all the illustrious sons of Sussex this century few could have made a more lasting daily visual impact, worldwide, than Eric Gill. It was in Sussex that Gill embarked on his international career - yet few people outside the world of the arts and publishing may have heard of his full name and controversial lifestyle. This article concentrates on Eric Gill's work on the former workshop premises on Ditchling Common and provides an illustrated record of this site.

Abstract:
Sussex remains rich in many areas of its industrial past and hand press establishments, or should we collate them as private presses, differed from more commercial concerns in that they could decide upon the work they undertook and were not necessarily restricted by commercial influences. Much of the equipment used in hand printing had of course previously been used in more commercial environments.
