Preview:When the first few members gathered together so long ago they all had ideas of what to put their talents to. One thought of MI's and so the fledgling archive started with Frank Leeson collecting them. It was clear this was a project that needed to be done as soon as possible as the stones were already becoming illegible. Later Peter Cox took it on and went out in the field with members transcribing. All the information gathered was put onto small oblong slips of paper, by surname, in boxes. By 1989 when I was persuaded to take it on there were a few thousand slips which grew very quickly; we had slipping parties to sort them into the boxes!
A Curious Tomb at Stedham, by Christine Payne, published September 2014 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 21 no. 3, article, p.135) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/508853]
Preview:In my role photographing and transcribing the tombstones I sometimes get one which intrigues me. This spring I have been transcribing Stedham, which has just such a stone. A large tomb dedicated to one family; John KNIGHT who died 1822 and his children with his wife Pricilla, though Pricilla's own death does not appear to be remembered on the stone.
The Tombstones Project, by Christine Payne, published March 2016 in Sussex Family Historian (vol. 22 no. 1, article, p.20) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 15860] & The Keep [LIB/509161]
Preview:The Tombstones Project has been slowing down and we could use volunteers to do some leg work. In the past the transcribing took lots of people and lots of work but the advent of the digital camera has changed all that.
