Review by E. W. H. [E.W. Holden] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1970:This new guidebook to Pevensey Castle, written by the author of Norman Castles in Britain (John Baker, 1969), is an up-to-date account of the castle from Roman times until the last war, profusely illustrated with excellent plans, photographs and pictures, three being in colour. The topography, history, the mediaeval castle and the Roman fort are described in non-technical language, while illustrations from the Bayeux Tapestry enliven the text.

Abstract:Although the town defences (particularly the gates) of Rye and Winchelsea (East Sussex) are well known, the evidence for other fortifications there has been neglected. In the thirteenth century, it appears that the Crown planned to build castles at both places; the resulting towers are analysed in detail.
