English Trade in the Middle Ages, by L. F. Salzman, M.A., F.S.A., published 1931 (Oxford: The Clarendon Press) accessible at: & West Sussex Libraries & East Sussex Libraries
Review by F. B. S. [F. Bentham Stevens] in Sussex Notes and Queries, August 1931:
This cannot be regarded as in any special sense a Sussex book, but its author, Mr. Salzman, has been so long and so prominently connected with the Sussex Archaeological Society and has rendered such conspicuous service as Honorary Editor of its Collections for more than twenty years, that a short notice will no doubt be welcome to many readers of S.N.Q.
Like Mr Salzman's previous works on English Life in the Middle Ages and English Industries of the Middle Ages, the book is full of interest both for the student and the general reader. It is packed from cover to cover with facts and apt examples, and is scholarly and learned without being in the least dull. No theories are propounded and no arguments are put forward, and it is clear that Mr. Salzman does not write to bolster up any preconceived ideas. But every now and then he permits himself a shrewd dig at some ancient or modern foible or some pretentious dogma.
Sussex sources are naturally quoted here and there. Thus we learn from a footnote on p.193 that in 1343 the rector of St. John-sub-Castro, Lewes, belonged to a gang of robbers. The references to the wool trade and the comparative figures given on p.224 and also on p.307 show that relatively speaking the wool trade of Sussex was not of great importance.
Perhaps most interesting of all to Sussex readers are the details as to the extent of maritime trade in the Middle Ages. Mr. Salzman has unearthed some returns relating to Winchelsea which set out the port dues collected from 1267 to 1272 (see pp.215-6 and 355). During the period ships came to Winchelsea from English ports such as Chichester, Shoreham, Dartmouth, Teignmouth, Yarmouth, and Dunwich; from French ports like Rouen, Harfleur, Dieppe, Treport, Eu, Abbeville, Boulogne and Calais; from Damme, Gravelines the Swyne and Middelburgh in the Low Countries; and even from Ardales, Fuenterrabia and San Sebastian in Spain. It is perhaps not too much to hope that Mr. Salzman will give Sussex readers further extracts from these Winchelsea records.

Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1933:
The Sussex Record Society has again put the students of Sussex history under a heavy debt of gratitude. It has undertaken the publication of the Chartulary of the Priory of St. Pancras, Lewes, as far as it concerns Sussex. The first volume is now published (Vol xxxviii of the Society's series) and the rest will be published in a further volume next year.
The Chartulary is amongst the Cottonian MSS. (Vespasian F.xv) in the British Museum. The Sussex portion has been edited and translated by Mr. L. F. Salzman, F.S.A., whose ability to deal with such an exacting task is recognised throughout the world of the learned. His work has been aided by the tireless labour and ability of the Rev. W. Budgen, F.S.A., Hon. Sec. of the S.R.S., in supplying the index.
All those who have studied the history of Sussex know that many of the earliest references to places in the County are to be found in the Charters of the three first Earls of Warenne. For the first time these Charters are given together in full, with many others as contained in the Chartulary. The original charters, in many cases, still exist in the Public Record Office. The date of the Chartulary is 1444, but existing originals go back as far as 1095 (Ancient Deeds AA. 463).
It may be as well to put on record that many of these originals were contained in the collection called 'Chapter House, Misc. Books ; B.5/5,' so called from having been kept in the Chapter House at Westminster. This is the reference given by Sir George Duckett in S.A.C. xxxv, 3, and also by Mr. Round in S.A.C. xl, 58. This book has since been cut up and the charters catalogued individually (see also S.A.C. lxv, 196).
A list of all the existing charters referred to in the body of the Chartulary is placed at the commencement of the volume, and footnotes giving variants, etc., make the whole a scholarly as well as an invaluable production.
The volume has been most cordially received by all members of the S.R.S. No doubt a full review will appear in the next volume of S.A.C. and in the meantime we advise our readers to hasten to secure a copy of a most valuable record.

Abstract:
A part-volume describing the cathedral and port city of Chichester, including a detailed account of the architecture of the cathedral.
Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1935.:
The publication of the third volume of the Victoria County History of Sussex is a matter of great importance to all who are interested in Sussex.
Held up for nearly 30 years by many causes, it now resumes its progress under the able editorship of Mr. L. F. Salzman, M.A., F.S.A.
The first part of the present volume deals with the Roman occupation of Sussex and its remains. This is contributed by Mr. S. E. Winbolt, who has made a special study of the period. It contains a map of the sites of all known Roman finds and a list of the finds themselves, except that at Balcombe, recorded in S.N. Q. iii, 160.
The second portion gives the history of Chichester, its City, Cathedral and Port, with a note on Kingsham. The architectural and general descriptions of the City were drawn up by the late Dr. William Page (the original Editor of the V.C.H. Series) and Mr. Hurford Rowe, the Heraldic details being contributed by the Rev. E. E. Dorling.
Both portions are fully illustrated.
The history of the City was undertaken by Professor Elizabeth Levett, but her lamented death, followed by that of Dr. Page himself, left the matter incomplete and caused further delay. Special mention should be made of the assistance given by Mr. W. D. Peckham in many ways and by Mr. W. H. Godfrey, who has contributed a fine plan of the Cathedral in addition to giving much time to the preparation of the plan of the Precincts.
It is hoped that the issue of the present volume will be quickly followed by one dealing with the Rape of Hastings, while another comprising the Rape of Lewes will follow in 1936.
It is hoped that all concerned with the history of Sussex (and who of our readers is not ?) will possess themselves of these valuable volumes, which may be obtained for two guineas each.

Abstract:
Borough of Hastings, Cinque Ports, Borough of Rye, Winchelsea.
Baldslow Hundred: Crowhurst, Hollington, Ore, Westfield
Battle Hundred: Battle, Whatlington
Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1937.:
The issue of a volume of this County History is looked forward to with keen interest, and the new volume fully maintains the high standard expected. It will, no doubt, make a wide appeal from the fact that the area covered contains such well-known places as Battle Abbey, Bodiam Castle and Herstmonceux Castle, as well as the ancient Towns of Rye and Winchelsea.
An editorial note explains that Dr. William Page at the time of his death was preparing the material for the volume, which is geographically the ninth volume of the History, though fourth in order of issue. Then, following a general account of the Rape and Honour of Hastings, the Borough of Hastings is dealt with from every conceivable aspect, descriptive, architectural, historical, economic, manorial and ecclesiastical; the castle and churches receive particular attention, and the article concludes with the unusual but useful feature - adopted also throughout the volume - of a detailed statement of the various Charities, in this case extending to no less than five and a half pages. Truly Hastings has been favoured with a host of benefactors, not the least being the compilers of this history, the study of which greatly enhances one's respect for this ancient port.
The story of the Cinque Ports is probably the most complete that has ever been written; and under this head the Boroughs of Rye and Winchelsea receive similar treatment to that accorded to Hastings. In the remaining 200 pages of the volume each of the thirteen Hundreds in the Rape, with the parishes and manors they contain, comes under review, and when we add that 40 ancient parishes and over 140 manors are included, some idea will be gathered of the enormous amount of research involved. The architectural descriptions of the churches are in nearly every case accompanied by dated ground plans, and we note that the responsibility for these plans is shared by Mr. W. H. Godfrey and Mr. John E. Ray, while the actual draughtmanship is by Mr. E. F. Harvey whose excellent work is familiar to the readers of these pages.
A statement concerning the officers of the Hundred of Foxearle (p.125), which is apparently a quotation from the Burrell MSS. calls for some comment, as the position suggested seems to depart from the normal. We read :- "The officers of the hundred, who were always chosen at the Easter court, were two headboroughs, only one of whom was sworn, two constables and two alderman". This is not altogether borne out by the Court Rolls which show that in the time of Henry VIII the officers were chosen at an Easter court, as stated, but in the reign of Elizabeth and also in the late 17th century, for which periods alone rolls are available, the elections were at the Michaelmas court. In regard to headboroughs, we find as might be expected, that each of the six tithings had one headborough ; two names in each case were put before the court, but the second was an alternative choice, failing the first, who was usually appointed and sworn. Two constables and one alderman were appointed for the hundred, but another may have been appointed at the Lawday which is mentioned as being held for Boreham and Wareing.
The detailed descriptions of the devolution of the various manors furnish a mass of useful genealogical material, and perhaps one of the most noticeable cases is that of the manor of Pett (p.191) which on the death of the last male member of the Thatcher family in or about 1650 became divisible, with the other family estates, between his seven sisters or their descendants, involving some 10 marriages and much sub-division of the shares. It is said with truth that after 1650 the division is confused, but what happened later is clear. In 1698 a partition of the estates was made and the manors of Pett and Mersham fell to the share of Andrew Wharton, and it was he who sold to Joseph Gage in 1699.
In conclusion, we must mention the illustrations which add greatly to the interest and beauty of the volume; there are 30 full-page plates of photographic reproductions of very high merit, besides many line drawings in the text, and other plans besides those of the churches already mentioned. Altogether it is a sumptious book and the Editor and his staff and all connected with its publication are to be warmly congratulated upon their work.

Review by D. Macleod in Sussex Notes and Queries, August, 1951:
To mark the passage of fifty years during which the Sussex Record Society has published fifty scholarly volumes containing records and documents relating to the County this Society has exuberated into a Jubilee Volume which is sure to appeal to the general public.
Probably for the first time no less that 191 most attractive drawings selected from the Burrell Collections are reproduced between the covers of one volume. And a most delightful collection they make. All are eighteenth century drawings by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm and James Lambert, who have given us the most fascinating views of the parish churches, mansion houses, castles and historic ruins as they stood in their day, with a few views of Sussex towns and villages such as Eastbourne, Hastings, Jevington and Rotherfield.
Appropriately enough to the occasion the introduction to this volume by Mr. L. F. Salzman gives in brief outline the story, of the Sussex Record Society from the summer of 1900 when its formation was first mooted to the present day, From this story emerges the fact, which if it is not a record is none the less notable, that Mr. Salzman took his place as a member of the first council of the Society elected in February 1901 and has continued to serve on the council ever since, being now one of its two literary directors, and in that capacity he has been largely responsible for this charming Jubilee Volume.
On this occasion the Society has relaxed its rule and non-members can purchase a copy of this volume on application to the Assistant Secretary of the Sussex Record Society at Barbican House, Lewes, for £2 12s. 6d., and it may be said that any who may buy this book may congratulate himself on having obtained a striking collection of eighteenth century views most admirably reproduced. The Society may well congratulate itself on this work and on its fine series of publications, regularly and punctually produced in spite of steadily rising costs of printing. Perhaps the Sussex Archaeological Society may also admit to some pride and satisfaction in the work of the Society of which it is the parent.

Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, August, 1951:
Although the Registrations started under a Statute of 1710, yet Sussex has only two Volumes starting from 1781. The entries in these were transcribed in full by the late Canon Penfold whose sad death prevented his completing the work which was finished and edited by Mr. Salzman. The Record is in the nature of a Catalogue but will be of interest to all persons desirous of tracing the ownership of "Manors" - a word which as Mr. Salzman points out is given for this purpose a wide meaning and even includes large estates with no Manorial rights.

Building in England, down to 1540, by L. F. Salzman, F.S.A., published 1952 (Oxford: The Clarendon Press) accessible at: & West Sussex Libraries & East Sussex Libraries
Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1952:
All Mr. Salzman's colleagues in the Sussex Archaeological Society will wish to join in congratulating him on the publication of this monumental work. The book, he tells us in his preface, was completed in 1934 and not finding a publisher able to produce a volume of this size, he presented the manuscript to the Society of Antiquaries, where it was often consulted by students in their library. It was through a grant from the Society of Authors that the Oxford University Press was at length enabled to issue it in its present form.
The book is encyclopaedic in its range. Mr. Salzman has printed in full 123 original contracts for various buildings dating from 1308 to 1538 and he has written a full account of all the processes of building, including materials and their sources, the conditions and terms of employment of labour and many other incidental matters. As a glossary of terms alone it is an invaluable contribution to our knowledge of the subject, for no one is better equipped to assemble the host of technical terms and interpret the many curious forms in which they are met. This is not a book to be read at one sitting, being in the main a work of reference, indispensable to all who study the subject. But no one will be surprised that Mr. Salzman has made much of his narrative eminently readable in spite of the necessity of marshalling pages of figures and technical data. His series of descriptions of buildings from those medieval authors who have written of them on various occasions is one of the most delightful parts of the book. Mr. Salzman has consulted some 2,000 printed works and some 1,500 manuscripts in the preparation of this comprehensive treatise and he has laid everyone who comes after him under a lasting debt in the accomplishment of a Herculean task which he alone could have attempted.

Abstract:
Chichester Rape
Dumpford Hundred: Chithurst, Didling, Elsted, Harting, Rogate, Terwick, Treyford, Trotton
Review by W. H. G. [W. H. Godfrey] in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1954:
To those who love their country and its past there is no pleasure quite so delightful as the opening of a new volume of the Victoria County History. Its contents are a continual feast and their form of presentation as satisfying to the eye as the highest standard of bookcraft can make them. In this new volume of Sussex, covering the Rape of Chichester, Mr. Salzman has not only maintained the high qualities which belong to this series as a whole but has succeeded in making it a model of what such a book should be in arrangement, balance, sufficiency of historical detail and apt illustration. There is a new policy in the Victoria Histories (shown in the Wiltshire volume just published) which omits the plans and much of the description of architecture on the plea that these will be amply supplied by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. But the topographical volumes on Sussex already issued, the City of Chichester and the Rapes of Chichester, Lewes and Hastings, follow the older pattern and, against the pleasant and instructive picture of the local historical background, give us its remaining tangible evidences.
Mr. Salzman is indebted to several expert contributors but to no one more than Mr. W. D. Peckham for the large number of plans of parish churches and their intelligent interpretation. Out of 66 parishes, no less than 52 have church plans and it is an indication of how ancient and therefore valuable these churches are in the study of English architecture that at least 14 of them possess more or less important parts of their fabric dating back to before 1100. In these churches much of the history of the parishes is reflected and made manifest. They are worthy of our greatest care, from the commanding importance of Bosham and Boxgrove to the modest dimensions of Chithurst and Selham.
Needless to say the historical information is handled with the utmost competence and the county will be fortunate if the three remaining rapes, Arundel, Bramber and Pevensey can be forthcoming under the same direction.
It may seem ungracious to add a regret for the omission of plans of the important examples of domestic architecture at Cowdray and Halnaker, the blocks of which were available. They would have been a useful addition to the text since plans of ancient houses are not easily found. There is a curious failure to acknowledge the source of 25 per cent. of the church plans (other than the blocks from which they are reproduced) and a not perhaps altogether merited neglect to notice, by way of footnote, the alternative interpretation of West Harting Church, which is given in the guide included in the Sussex Archaeological Society's series.
This brief notice can best be concluded with the hope that all who can will possess themselves of this and its companion volumes and will do their utmost to forward the interests of the Victoria County History which is cumulatively the most valuable contribution of the century to the local history of our country, so far attempted.

Edward I, by L. F. Salzman, F.S.A., published 1968 (Constable)
Review by M. C. in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1968:
It comes as something of a shock to read "Edward I" and be forcibly reminded how much historical writing has changed over the last couple of decades, and how relatively unfamiliar Dr. Salzman's approach now is. Nevertheless, in these days of trends, problems, and statistical analysis, straightforward chronological narrative comes as a refreshing change, especially when the style is as lucid and readable as this. Recent writing has tended to concentrate on particular aspects of Edward's reign; one is thus inclined to lose sight of the complexities, of the fact that the king was dealing with so many problems simultaneously, and this book provides an admirable corrective. Dr. Salzman also succeeds in showing us Edward as a man of his age, a truly medieval king, dubbing knights, holding tournaments as well as Parliaments, an assiduous visitor of pilgrimage shrines who rode into battle behind the standard of St. Cuthbert or St. Neot, whose mind still worked within the conventions of a feudal and chivalric code which his actions were to do so much to destroy. It was a violent age, and Dr. Salzman is right to remind us that expulsion of the Jews was "the most universally popular act of Edward's reign," and that the barbarous punishment meted out to Wallace was one which "contemporary law and public opinion would have regarded as justifiable."
Some of the best things in this book are the vivid scenes, such as the preparations for Edward's coronation, where the detail, carefully chosen and aptly handled, brings the whole event to life. Dr. Salzman has a profound knowledge of contemporary sources which he uses to great effect in shaping his narrative, but many may regret that he did not see fit to give more space to a critical discussion of at least some of the evidence. The views of so wise a scholar on, for example, the relative merits of the chronicles he lists, would be of enormous interest and value to students of the period.
