His obituary in the Brighton Argos said he joined the East India Company in 1859, transferred to the Royal Munster Fusiliers and took part in the capture of the Khyber Pass. He had a family of fifteen and settled in Brighton. Article covers the years 1841 - 1932.

Preview:To most people the name John Doe would seem to be a hypothetical one, the unknown person, the Mr X. It is quite understandable therefore that when I learnt that John DOE was the name of my paternal grandfather I had some doubts, especially in view of "the story". There are several versions of the tale, each varying somewhat but each basically the same and like all family stories it has been told one to another, until one wonders where embroidery was added and where true facts have been lost.
