Abstract:Thoughts on the title of this article were prompted by a recent visit by Mr and Mrs E.W. Holden and myself to that most interesting earthwork known as Piper's Copse, near Kirdford, Sussex (SU 978 295). This was first surveyed by G.H. Kenyon in 1935, who carried out a small excavation there with S.E. Winbolt soon afterwards (see Sussex Arch. Collections 77 (1936) pp.245-9; further notes on the site were contributed by Mr Kenyon in S.A.C. 86 (1947) p.xxxix, and 99 (1961) p.248; also in Sussex Notes and Queries May 1969; and by Winbolt in The Times of August 5th 1935.)

Abstract:Firstly I would like to comment on the very great number of new bloomery sites, not known to Straker, found by W.I.R.G. Indeed this has been the main area of discovery by the group. In contrast very few have been dated by documents, pottery or other artefacts. I do not here propose to discuss the question of Carbon 14 dating of bloomeries. I feel that its accuracy is under suspicion. In the only two cases that I know where such dating was done, and pottery was also present, the Carbon 14 date differed quite considerably from that of the well authenticated pottery.

Abstract:A great deal of intensive fieldwork by the writer, following on visits by the Buxted Branch of W.I.R.G., have failed to find any trace of Withyham Furnace. Straker could only surmise that the now existing large lake in Buckhurst Park (TQ 497 348) had covered all relics of the furnace and forge, and refers to a lease of 1676 when he thought that the site had been converted to a corn mill (see Wealden Iron p.253). Lower refers to the Bakers of Stoneland Park (afterwards incorporated into Buckhurst Park) having ironworks powered "by a chain of ponds still existing below the house" (see Sussex Arch. Coll. Vol.2 (1849) p.220).

Abstract:In view of the scarcity of evidence for Iron Age iron working in Sussex, particularly of B.C. date, it is of great interest to hear of such evidence from Slonk Hill, Shoreham (TQ 226 065) where, following, a rescue excavation in 1968, in advance of roadworks, Messrs. Hartridge and Whitty have been working each season.

Abstract:It is, we think, well known how important navigation was to the business success, over a period of nearly three centuries, of the Ashburnham ironworks complex. This is briefly referred to by Straker (Wealden Iron p.372) when in 1664 the rights of navigation from Kitchenham Forge to Boreham Bridge were re-affirmed. From Boreham Bridge there were, of course, navigational facilities to the sea at Pevensey.

Abstract:At the end of July 1980 the course of pipe laying by the Mid-Sussex Water Company was being watched, the section concerned being that running from the SE side of the B2188 road (S of the new Blackhill reservoir) to a point just E of Kings Standing Farm buildings. At the time when this was being examined only the shallow preliminary 'top soiling' trench had been completed. This operation consists of removing the top soil over a 4in-wide strip leaving, in this case, the yellow clay subsoil exposed.
At a point about 115m. N of Kings Standing Farm (TQ 476205) a circular area of burnt clay was noticed, and next to it an oval area of dark loam contrasting with the surrounding yellow subsoil. As it was expected that pipe distribution and laying, involving further trenching, would probably take place over the following few days, an emergency rescue excavation was organised by WIRG field group members.

Reference to this important find was made in Bulletin (WIRG Wealden Iron, 1st Series) XVII (1980), p.15, and again in Newsletter 1, p.3, where the archaeomagnetic date of ninth century ad was given. It has now been decided to give it the name 'Millbrook', that being the nearest feature on Ashdown Forest named on Ordnance Survey maps.

Abstract:This was probably one of the most important of the large scale 'factory type' Roman iron smelting sites of the central Weald. The working area (TQ 475267) was almost completely destroyed, early last century, when the vast slag heaps were used as a source of road-making material. The site lay astride the stream separating Maresfield and Buxted parishes, the working area being in the former and the mining in the latter. On the north-west side of the stream, the working area side, the valley is relatively flat but with some hollows and undulations. On the south-east side, now known as Mill and Furnace Woods, the ground rises rapidly and the Wadhurst Clay is exposed.

Abstract:Sheffield Forge (TQ 404238) seems to have been established as a unit with Sheffield Furnace (TQ 416257) by 1554 (E. Straker, Wealden Iron (1931), 412-14), but by 1598 (E. Straker (ed.), The Buckhurst Terrier. 1597-8 Sussex Rec. Soc. 39 (1933), 72-3), when the furnace had been converted to a corn mill, the forge remained in working order. It was still in use in 1653 but not in 1664. Included with it were 30 acres in adjoining Coleham.
The water system at the forge was an unusual one, although not unique, being paralleled at Kitchenham Forge (TQ 679135). Water from the Ouse was led into an embanked pond artificially constructed in the flood plain of the river, and returned to the main stream by a mile-long channel whose name, the Hammer Ditch, still survives.

Abstract:In November 1983, after a message from Hastings Museum, we visited Mrs Watson, Poundsford Farm, Burwash (TQ 637225) who had some massive cast iron objects of unknown use. Their shape was puzzling, but we surmised that they must relate to a furnace, forge, or possibly lime kiln. Later we learned that Mr W. Beswick had inspected them some ten years previously but was not certain as to their use.
The Excavation of a Roman Tilery on Great Cansiron Farm, Hartfield, East Sussex, by David R. Abstract:During the winter of 1981/2 Giles Swift of the Wealden Iron Research Group discovered in a ploughed field on Great Cansiron Farm, Hartfield, East Sussex (TQ 45603835) an area of burnt clay and Roman tile, together with a few pieces of Roman pottery. The site, which lies close to a small stream, is located between an extensive Roman iron-working site to the south-west and possible large Roman iron-ore quarries to the north-east (FIG. 1). In advance of further plough damage, during the summer of 1982 the Field Archaeology Unit (Institute of Archaeology) undertook a trial excavation and survey in order to attempt to interpret and date the site more precisely. This work was funded by the Department of the Environment and East Sussex County Council. The 1982 investigations revealed a well-preserved Roman tile kiln and a rectangular floor of tile and burnt clay. Unfortunately extremely inclement weather during the second half of the excavation meant that it was impossible, given the time and resources available, to finish excavating either of these discoveries. The farmer, Mr Udell, kindly agreed to leave and plough around the excavation area and a second season of excavations was undertaken in 1983 thanks to the financial backing of East Sussex County Council and Keymer Handmade Clay Tiles of Burgess Hill, Sussex. In between the two excavations, staff of the Ancient Monuments Laboratory carried out a geophysical survey of the area to the west of the tile kiln.
