Abstract:A stretch of about four yards of the Roman Stane Street, or rather the core of it, which I have recently laid bare at Alfoldean, near Slinfold, Sussex, was made up of two layers of biggish slabs of local stone set in sand on top of the local clay. The surface of the Roman road had been used in the make-up of the modern road (1810), but plenty of it is scattered about in the fields, and i t is quite obvious that it was composed of three elements: chert from the lower greensand at Petworth and Fittleworth, flints from the South Downs, and sea-pebbles from the south coast, probably Shoreham. This definite datum, and the knowledge that near Rowhook on the line of the Rowhook-Farley Heath road, as marked on the Ordnance map, was a field traditionally called 'Stone Field', prompted me to test the line for road-metal, after having obtained permission from Mr. Lee Steere, of Ockley, and a series of friendly landowners and farmers.

Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, August 1928:This is an attractive handbook, well-written and with delightful illustrations. An introduction deals with the county as a whole in various aspects, including a useful survey of its historical associations. The detailed descriptions of the places are terse, and clear directions as to routes are given. Notwithstanding the warning that the book does not pretend to be a complete guide to the county, one cannot but regret some of the omissions. The local pronunciation of the place-names is a useful feature, but in some cases there is room for difference of opinion. To take the example of Berwick (E. Sussex), Mr. Winbolt says it is not to be pronounced Berrick. But that is just the form (less one " r," Berick) that appears on an estate plan dated 1647. Which is the more likely to give the true Sussex vernacular, the 17th century or the 20th?

Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1933:We congratulate Mr. Winbolt on his very pleasing volume, which contains the results of his very thorough investigation of a subject which owes its existence as a definite study very largely to his own efforts.
A great proportion of the book has already been made public through the good offices of The Sussex County Magazine, but there are several additional chapters giving the fullest particulars of the technique of glass-making, with many excellent illustrations, details of finds, as well as an appendix giving the actual methods used in glass-making as described in treatise by Theophilus, a very early authority.
The illustrations throughout are most interesting and to the point. The whole book is well got up and is an excellent specimen of the monograph in which present-day research embodies itself.

With a Spade on Stane Street, by S. E. Winbolt, published 1936 (Methuen & Co.) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 12565] & West Sussex Libraries
Review by I. D. Margary in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1936:This is a most welcome and timely addition to Sussex archaeology, for although Belloc's The Stane Street (1913) gives a very interesting account of the road, it has received severe criticism in Capt. W. A. Grant's The Topography of Stane Street (1922) on various technical grounds. Much additional evidence had since come to light, field-work methods have improved, and altogether an up-to-date treatise on this road had become urgently desirable to bring it into line with other roads in the county. Mr. Winbolt has studied Stane Street for many years and gives us an interesting and thorough account of its exact route and of the work done in tracing the more doubtful portions, most of it being his own. He is rarely satisfied with the evidence for these portions unless it includes actual metalling in situ, and one feels that at very few points can any doubt remain as to the exact position of the road. At a few points the line shown on the O.S. maps is found to need correction.
A valuable feature of the book, which is very well produced, on good paper and in very clear type, is the wealth of maps and illustrations, the latter well chosen to show typical portions of the visible but disused sections. A complete set of 6-inch map strips covers the whole route, and appropriate notes of remains, sections dug, and of the strict alignments on which the route was based (put in by Capt. Grant, R.E.) added upon them, give a very clear and accurate account of the exact course followed. There are also plans of special details en route, notably of the wayside Roman waterworks system at Grevatts Wood near Bignor, and of the Epsom and Ewell districts which presented certain difficult problems now cleared up.
This book will be the standard work on Stane Street for many years to come and Sussex archaeologists should be very grateful for receiving such an attractively produced and interesting account of an important piece of field-work and detailed study on one of the major antiquities of the county.

Britain B. C., by S. E. Winbolt, published 1943 (Pelican Books)
Review by E. Cecil Curwen in Sussex Notes and Queries, August 1943:It is a Herculean task to write a book on Britain before Christ, and it must be said that our member, Mr. Winbolt, has succeeded very well on the whole. Writing for the general public, and for the men in the Forces in particular, the author has sifted the very bulky literature of the subject. How bulky this is, only those who have tried to keep abreast of it can appreciate. He has achieved a fair measure of success in avoiding old erroneous beliefs and in keeping up to date, both in matter and in opinion. He rightly treats Britain, not as an isolated unit, but as a part of western Europe. The archeological evidence provided by Sussex receives its fair share of attention, and one of the advantages of the book for Sussex readers will be to show how our local archaeology fits into the framework of British archaeology as a whole.
The author has tried to pack too much into the 156 pages of his book, and this detracts from its readability. As a consequence there are places where it reads like a student's notes jotted down during a lecture. Many of the dimensions, too, with which the text is cluttered, are quite unnecessary and rather tiresome for the general reader.
Archaeologists will not agree with every statement in the book, and it is perhaps inevitable that a compilation of this kind should contain many errors. Another regrettable feature is that the author does not always make a sufficiently clear distinction between legitimate inference and conjecture. While the former may in a popular summary of this kind be stated as facts, conjecture, however probable, should never be so presented. The scientific worker keeps this distinction clearly in mind, but the public at large do not always appreciate it, and they are apt as a consequence to he unnecessarily credulous or sceptical towards archaeology, according to their bent. A work of this kind would have provided a good opportunity for educating such readers in the art of clear thinking.
