Review by W. H. G. [W. H. Godfrey] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1928:Lady Wolseley loves Sussex ardently, and above all things, she desires others to love it too. Her pen runs eloquently, inspired by a single-hearted joy in the beauty of all she sees and the message of human interest which it brings to her. If the book before us needs an excuse, it is sufficient that it can hardly fail to communicate the enthusiasm of its author to those who turn its pages.
Sussex in the Past would be more correctly described as a journey of archaeological discovery through the Hundred of Steyning. Lady Wolseley takes us through the villages and into the ancient houses of the lovely valley of the Adur and discourses of those who dwelt and worked therein in days when this part of the country was full of life and business. The quietude of rural beauty and the evidences of former activity mingle in these chapters as in a tapestry where threads of every colour unite in harmony. If it is beyond the power of the author to make archaeology easy, she has at any rate charged it with an aesthetic quality which should lure many readers to follow her path of enquiry and ultimate discovery.
In her pilgrimage Lady Wolseley has certainly succeeded in weaving, as she sets out to do, " a sort of story that will carry us down the centuries and unite one circle of past generations with another." She disarms criticism by a modest disavowal of authoritative knowledge, yet her reading is wide and her care in quoting her sources is exemplary. In her mission as an interpreter of the charm that lies in the study of topography she has a gentle rebuke for the philistine when she notes that " the critical faculty is far more strongly developed in fellow archaeologists than the appreciative one."
It is a tragic fact that without appreciation of its true content and of its beauty, all knowledge is empty and vain. Lady Wolseley's most happy contribution to the study of archaeology is her insistence that our aim must be a realisation of the beauty of human life and the natural scene in which our lives are cast. Mr. Garnet Wolseley's happy sketches in colour emphasize this message, and the type and format of the book support it by their excellence. Such consistency is too rare.
There is one thing that would help the author to fill the outlines of her canvas with even greater human interest and that is to question the ancient houses more closely and elicit their architectural secrets. One suspects, for instance, that Maudlin Farm may have been a structural part of the mediaeval hospital of St. Mary Magdalene at Bidlington of which the Victoria County History has so interesting an account. Lady Wolseley tracks the hospital down to the year 1553 and picks up the history of the house in 1565. What if this were the very " Maladria in Bidelington " to which (as Miss Rotha Clay tell us) the heir of Nicholas de Malesmeins was taken in 1220, after his perplexed guardian had brought him before the barons of the king's exchequer? Stones and timber are as closely writ with history as any document, and in them we may have the key to a fuller understanding of the lives that have passed before our time.

Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1930:This is another handsome volume on Sussex, published by the Medici Society for the Viscountess Wolseley, which contains some excellent illustrations in colour, those of Oldland Mill, Ditchling and the view from Chanctonbury being especially delightful.
In every page Lady Wolseley shows her love for Sussex and the history of its old houses. All those who read her book will want to know more and to see more of what she describes with so much ease. Information of the right sort is not easily come by and Lady Wolseley is careful to acknowledge her debt to those from whom she has gathered so much. One sometimes fears that the County may suffer from too much popularity and in these cosmopolitan days one can but hope that the sturdy independence of the Sussex people, which Lady Wolseley so much appreciates, will survive the inroads made upon it by modern influences. At any rate, this is a very charming record by word and illustration, of many beauties hidden as yet from the ordinary passer-by.

Abstract:Frances Garnet Wolseley was born in London in 1872. She was very much a countrywoman who loved both hunting and taking long solitary walks with her dogs. Early in 1898 the Wolseleys rented Glynde Place and she had by then trained as a gardener. In 1903 her mother saw an advertisement placed by a lady gardener who was in 'distressed circumstances' and engaged her. Her employment then sparked the idea of founding a school for lady gardeners.
Arthur Beckett founded the Sussex County Magazine in December 1926 and asked her to contribute a series entitled Historic Houses of Sussex. Over the years that followed she described 115 houses, the last four articles appearing posthumously. In Myth and Memory she declared that she would always be glad that she had been chosen to write the series for it enabled her to spend her summers exploring the county she loved looking at fascinating houses. In winter she did her research. This book contains the articles she wrote between 1926 and 1935 on East Sussex. (West Sussex Historic Houses & their Owners is published by Country Books in two companion volumes.)
This book should prove invaluable for the lover of old Sussex houses, and with an index of family names, for those tracing their family tree. The very fact that she was a viscountess, opened doors to her. Several of these old buildings had been reduced to farm houses. Many of them are still in private hands - where circumstances have changed, they are mentioned at the end of each article.

These two volumes contain articles first published in the Sussex County Magazine between 1926 and 1935. Professional researchers have long known of them as a resource and will welcome this re-print in collected form. New readers - or browsers, since these are big books - should find them rewarding.
Viscountess Frances Wolseley, when in her mid-forties and then best known for her books on gardening, was to develop an abiding interest in historic Sussex buildings. Largely self-taught, and putting her privileged background to good use, she was able to communicate her enthusiasm in a mix of well-researched history, structural observation, country lore, horticultural notes, and personal comment.
