Our Lewes, by David Arscott, published 1 January 1980 (128 pp., Stroud: Sutton Publishing Ltd., ISBN-10: 0750936649 & ISBN-13: 9780750936644) accessible at: East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:
Lewes, set among the Downs and just a few miles from the sea, is prized for the rich history enshrined in its Norman castle, medieval town walls and venerable High Street houses. Those lucky enough to live there, however, relish the vibrancy of its here-and-now as much as its enviable heritage. In the long, hot summer of 2003 David Arscott explored the county town with his microphone and camera to record the thoughts and experiences of people from all walks of life Lewes life. Here are its shops, restaurants, hotels, churches, pubs and schools, and first-hand accounts of day-to-day life from a wide range of Lewesians involved in arts and crafts, brewing, politics, journalism, photography, book-selling, hairdressing and a wealth of other industries and activities. Ranging from the busy High Street to the estates on the fringes of the town, this is contemporary Lewes as it has never been seen before - a vivid celebration of today's community which will itself one day be a small part of the historical record.

Abstract:
This biography traces Edward Burne-Jones's life and suggests a deeper understanding of his work. It tells of his beginnings as a solitary child in Birmingham, the only son of a not too successful picture-framer, and his formative years at Oxford where, with William Morris, he felt the powerful influence of Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1860 he married the 19-year-old Georgiana Macdonald. This book describes their life together, Georgie's constant loyalty throughout his periods of illness and his infatuations with striking young women, and his love for his children: he was a slave to his beautiful daughter, Margaret, and bewildered by his difficult son, Phil. But Burne-Jones was, in fact, a sympathetic man, and a great wit. This edition has been brought back into print to coincide with the centenary of Burne-Jones's death.

Portslade and Hove Memories, by Judy Middleton, published 9 December 2004 (160 pp., Stroud: Sutton Publishing Ltd., ISBN-10: 0750939915 & ISBN-13: 9780750939911) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries & East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:
Portslade is the district furthest west in the Brighton conurbation. Originally a Downland village, it still retains a wealth of old buildings and a real sense of community - despite the arrival of industry on the coast during the nineteenth century. Today it is one of the most densely populated areas in Brighton and Hove. This book is the result of over 50 interviews with elderly residents of Portslade, recorded over many hours. They recall life in the town and surrounding countryside in the first half of the twentieth century up to Portslade's VE Day celebrations. Included are vivid memories of school days, working as a butcher's boy, life as a teacher, early cars and other transport, cinemas and entertainment, and serving in 'Dad's Army'. First issued in two volumes in 1990 and 1991, the text has been fully revised and expanded for this new edition; it has also been re-illustrated.
