A Millennium of Facts in the History of Horsham and Sussex, 947-1947, by William Albery, published 1947 (667 pp., Horsham Museum Society & printed at The Southern Publishing Co Ltd) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 5997] & The Keep [LIB/503845] & British Library & Horsham Museum Society
Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, February 1948:
This (as the Author says) does not purport to be a History of Horsham or Sussex; it is a collection of nine articles on different subjects, which must represent the labour of a lifetime devoted to collection of information, and all those interested in Sussex owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Albery for the preservation of the material and its publication in a form available to the general public.
Part I (the Manor and Borough) is a valuable collection of information; but the undated script (p. 28) stated by the Author to be in 14th century style and dated by him as the 16th century, reads more like the flamboyant style of the later 18th century, and the reference to the River as the Arun shows it cannot be earlier than Stuart times. Part II (Horsham Common) is marred by the expression of the Author's views as if they were undoubted facts. Part III (Crime and Punishment) contains little new or peculiar to Sussex. Part IV (the County Goal), Part V (Quaker Persecutions), Part VI (Smuggling), Part VII (Napoleonic Wars) and Part VIII (The 1830 rioting) are interesting collections of materials. Part X (Transport) is only a summary of comparatively recent history; for instance there is no reference to the older roads such as that through Denne Park.

Abstract:
The Diaries of Sarah Hurst records the day to day life of a young woman who lived in Horsham, Sussex between 1759 and 1762. Consequently, this book can claim to be one of the most important sources of information on life in the 18th century. The Diaries of Sarah Hurst not only create a vivid portrayal of the local town's people they also provide a fascinating insight into the social history of women, as they contain the intimate thoughts and feelings of a young woman and her relationships with the people around her. Sarah's intimate diaries can't help but touch the reader as she writes about her love for Henry Smith, a man who was thirteen years older than her.
Review by Sue Berry in Sussex Past & Present no. 121, August 2010:
Diaries can tell us much about how a person sees his or her world and when they can be linked with others of the same period or close to, even better - for one person's view of a time, person and place may be very different from another's. Sarah Hurst's diary predates that of John Baker of Horsham but they knew the same people and this Susan Djabri uses well to show how the two writers had very different views of the same people. Sarah's diary is of the same date as Thomas Turner of East Hoathly who, like Sarah, went sea-bathing along our coastline. The difference in their approach to going bathing is a comment on the difference between the lifestyle of the affluent Hurst and the struggling Turner as well as their personalities. Both diarists are from businesses. Sarah expects to help in her family's shop but also writes poetry and has a lively social life as many urban Georgian women did. One would like to know why she was so secretive about her marriage, not telling her family until afterwards. The diary ends before that story unfolds.
Many women like Sarah worked in businesses in Georgian England and a considerable number ran their own. The formidable Mrs Dring of Brighton ran a shop and a lodging house, Isabella Pullen built her own. Their role is understated in most Georgian studies but a start has been made in Hannah Barker's The Business of Women - female enterprise and urban development in Northern England 1760-1830, Oxford University Press, 2006. Diaries such as this with the excellent background research by the editor, street directories, inventories, wills and other sources should help us to understand the role of women in Georgian Sussex.

Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian vol. 19 no. 3, September 2010:
This book will unfold year by year from 1914 to 1919 the lives and conditions of Horsham families as they were forced to accept and adjust to the hardships and sacrifices of the Great War. In its 862 pages and many photographs it is a fascinating and informative reference book and research tool for anyone with ancestors from Horsham who fought in the Great War, as it is indexed so that the reader can look up specific names with ease and read personal profiles of the military careers of those who were called upon to make the supreme sacrifice, the battles they fought, as well as the family history.
Also listed are the many major battles with vivid detailed descriptions and photographs of individuals, regiments, battle scenes where Horsham servicemen fought and died, many personal letters from the Front, some war-related poetry and extracts from numerous unit daily war diaries, as well as a variety of maps giving the location of battles.
Alongside this there is a section on decorations, campaign medals and memorial entitlements to Horsham casualties with a photograph of each medal, for example The Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Allied Victory Medal, etc together with a detailed description of why they would be awarded.
The selected index covers the various Regiments on both sides, as well as casualties named on Horsham's War Memorial. The author has also researched those casualties who are not included on the War Memorial. I found it easy to find two of my ancestors and read all about their families, the hardships they endured and details of the battles they fought.

Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian vol. 19 no. 2, June 2010:
Part of the research undertaken by people looking for ancestors is to visit graveyards - we wonder what did our ancestors look like and what did they do during their lives?
This attractively produced booklet takes us on a journey through Denne Road cemetery in Horsham, now declared a site of nature conservation interest, a quiet and beautiful place today and a green oasis near the heart of a busy town. It opened in 1852 after St Mary's churchyard became full and in 1856 was the only permitted town graveyard when other, non-conformist, graveyards were closed. There is a very interesting history of the cemetery from its beginnings up to date and the information on its development gives the reader a social history of Horsham and highlights the lives of individual past inhabitants, some of whom are buried there. There are excellent photographs of people, gravestones and life in Horsham over the 19th and 20th centuries. A comprehensive index of people mentioned in the book, as well as those whose gravestones are shown, will be of great help to anyone researching their family history.
An excellent publication invaluable to anyone interested in Horsham burials.

Abstract:
Published in 1911 it transformed our idea of Horsham and became a classic of working men's autobiographical writing. Written with quill pen or steal nib, dipped in ink and printed by hand set type on thick rough paper Henry Burstow's Reminiscences of Horsham was a child of the Edwardian era. Now friends of Horsham Museum using the latest digital technology and laser printing have created a new version of the masterpiece for sale. Henry Burstow's Reminiscences of Horsham has been re-imagined for today's readers, to re-awaken our understanding of Horsham in the age of Queen Victoria.
