A note on a section of Coombe Rock and Brickearth at Angmering-on-sea, Sussex, by B. W. Sparks, B.A., published 1949 in The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association London (no. 60 issue 4, article, pp.288-293) View Online
Abstract:A temporary cliff-section in the superficial deposits of the Sussex Coastal Plain revealed some new details of the lithological composition of these beds, in particular of the gravels which lie between the Coombe Rock proper and the Brickearth. A small fauna of freshwater mollusca was obtained from lenticular beds of chalky silt lying within the gravels and evidence of human occupation from the Brickearth. On the basis of the lithology of the beds and the contained organic remains an attempt has been made to deduce the geographical conditions obtaining during their deposition.
Guide to the Church of St. Margaret, Angmering, Sussex, edited by W. H. Godfrey, published 1955 (Angmering: Angmering Parochial Church Council) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries
Review by G. D. J. [G. D. Johnston] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November, 1955.:This is another of those admirable little guides edited for the Society by Mr. W. H. Godfrey and no higher praise can be given than that it is well up to the high standard of previous guides of the series. The Church is mainly a reconstruction of 1853, but the tower dates from 1507 and there is some 12th century work still remaining. There is an unusual feature in this guide due to the parish now including the former parishes of St. Nicholas, East Angmering (united in 1593, whose church was only sixty yards away from the remaining one) and Bargham (in the Downs), whose last Rector was appointed in 1524 and whose church is now being excavated and was recently visited by the Society. There are historical notes on these two former parishes.

Abstract:The Roman villa at Angmering was one of the first of the elaborate early Roman villas of Sussex to be excavated. The bathhouse has always been seen as a structure with a single main phase, and the arrangement of the rest of the villa complex is far from clear. This article re-examines the bathhouse and proposes a new interpretation of its structural sequence based around four principal phases of activity. The rest of the villa complex is briefly examined in relation to the bathhouse.

Preview:In June's SFH, I wrote about my missing George BONGARD and other members of the BONGARD and OSWIN families. Although I have still not found any record of the death of George BONGARD, a bricklayer and builder born in Heene in 1806, I have found more information on other aspects of the story. George was one of nine children of James BONGARD/BUNGUARD and Lucy TALMEDGE. The first five were born in Angmering: Ann c1793, Margaret 1794, John 1796, James c1799, and Daniel 1801. The other four were born in Heene: Frances who was born and died in 1804 and was buried in Angmering with her grandparents John and Deborah BONGARD, George 1806, Thomas 1809 and Jane 1812. Most of the family are proving as elusive as George but I have tracked down Daniel and Thomas as well as Daniel's son George Henry BONGARD. Their stories are in marked contrast, the one being a story of success, the other of tragedy.
