Abstract:
In 1925 the author published a paper on "The Geology of the Country around Crowhurst (Sussex) "; in this, attention was given to the stratigraphy and petrology of the main rock-types of that district, and the structural details were purposely excluded until a larger area (Ord. Surv. Sheet 57, Sussex), of which Crowhurst forms the eastern part, was surveyed. This has now been done and the final results are presented in this paper.

A Survey of Tile from the Roman Bath House at Beauport Park, Battle, E. Sussex, by Gerald Brodribb, published November 1979 in Britannia (vol. 10, article, pp.139-156)   View Online
Abstract:
One of the reasons for the Roman invasion of Britain was the hope of exploiting the natural resources of the country. It was not long before there was considerable iron-working in the Weald, especially in the area round Battle, East Sussex. Iron slag is to be seen at several sites, but little excavation of these has taken place. The best evidence for iron-working comes from Beauport Park, where a vast slag heap was discovered in 1862: much of this was removed during the 1870s for road-making, and there was no excavation of the site until the writer began work in 1967, and after three years' search found a building that proved to be a bath-house.

Abstract:
In 1997 Archaeology South-East carried out a major excavation in the centre of Battle, on the site of the medieval market place. An earlier evaluation in 1990 revealed the existence of stratified medieval deposits on the site. The 1997 work was hampered by extensive modern disturbance relating to the recent industrial use of the site, but did reveal an interesting sequence of features relating to the medieval and early post-medieval use of the site. Fragmentary remains of a stone building identified from documentary sources as being a former market hall or courthouse were excavated, together with a major boundary ditch and a series of rubbish pits. Two large ponds were also located. Artefacts included quantities of medieval and early post-medieval pottery, which, although not forming major assemblages, nevertheless cast light on the life of the town.

Battle Abbey and Battle Churches Since 1066, by Keith D. Foord, published 1 November 2011 (164 pp. + 73 illus. & 36 plates, Battle Methodist church, ISBN-10: 0956959709 & ISBN-13: 9780956959706) accessible at: Battle & District Historical Society & East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:
Although published by the Battle Methodist Church to raise funds for its new building project this work is, as the author states in his introductory chapter, 'an ecumenical book'. Dr Foord draws upon a rich variety of sources, from Searle's classic 'Lordship and Community' to unpublished papers belonging to the respective churches of Battle and documents located in the East Sussex Record Office. Included with the bibliography is an interesting list of web-sites, and the 164 pages of narrative benefit from a comprehensive index. The book is profusely illustrated with 73 black and white illustrations and 36 colour plates.
Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian vol. 20 no. 3, September 2012:
This book contains varied and sometimes extraordinary stories of the Churches of Battle and their founders, people and benefactors, from the Battle of Hastings through the foundation of the Abbey Church until 2011. Included are the changes to the various churches over the years and a well-illustrated chapter on the Timeline from 1070 to the future.

Around Battle Through Time, by Nathan Dylan Goodwin, published 18 December 2012 (96 pp., Stroud: Amberley Publishing, ISBN-10: 144560406X & ISBN-13: 9781445604060)
Abstract:
The small Sussex town of Battle owes its very name and creation to the famous Battle of Hastings which took place here in 1066; the most decisive and important battle to have ever taken place in England. Following Duke William of Normandy's crowning victory, Battle prospered through the Middle Ages as a market town, a tradition which continues to this day. Always dominating the landscape of the town has been the magnificent Abbey which William created to celebrate his victory. Through a collection of largely Edwardian photographs, this book tells the story of Battle and the beautiful, historic surrounding villages of Catsfield, Westfield, Sedlescombe, and Crowhurst; each village steeped in its own rich history. Around Battle Through Time is essential reading for anyone who knows and loves this little Sussex town. - See more at: https://www.amberley-books.com/discover-books/local-history/area/around-battle-through-time.html#sthash.hB0XEpen.dpuf
Review by Sharon Paskins in Sussex Family Historian vol. 20, no. 7, September 2013:
This book is a fabulous photographic history of Battle and the surrounding villages of Catsfield, Westfield, Sedlescombe and Crowhurst. It includes photos of many of the historic buildings in the area accompanied with a short paragraph of their history or inhabitants.
The historic photos are predominately Edwardian and this book provides an opportunity to see some local buildings that have sadly now been destroyed, such as Normanhurst Court in Catsfield.

Bats, Baronets and Battle: A Social History of Cricket and Cricketers from an East Sussex Town, by Tim Dudgeon, published 25 March 2013 (236 pp., Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse UK, ISBN-10: 1481784285 & ISBN-13: 9781481784283) accessible at: British Library & East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:
Bats, baronets and Battle is more than just about cricket. This is a history full of colourful characters - eccentric baronets with a fondness for gambling, forthright women who wished to take their role and the game beyond an excuse to wear a pretty dress, and brothers from local villages who played the sport at the highest levels home and abroad. If Sussex was the 'cradle' for the earliest of cricket, the villages around Battle were there at the game's birth. From Georgian times and the murky world of 18th century politics, Tim Dudgeon traces Battle cricket's role from its role in 18th century Georgian gambling though the fear of 19th century rural unrest and the dawn of the professional game to the tragic impact of two world wars and into the modern era. The story he uncovers is an intriguing one that has local people and communities at its heart, but throws light on their links with events and forces that have shaped our world today.
