The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Battle, by F. Vere Hodge, published 1953 (Battle: Barrett)
Review by L. F. Salzman in Sussex Note and Queries, November 1953:A good deal has been written about this important church, but this is the first satisfactory guide to it. The ecclesiastical, as well as the architectural history is fully treated, and the booklet, of 72 pages, is lavishly illustrated and provided with an index. There are a number of points about the dating of parts of the fabric on which different views have been held by various authorities; the author is careful to indicate these when giving his own opinion. He may be said to have established his case for the Chapel, or certainly the Aisle, of St. Catherine being on the north side of the church and not on the south, although the canopy of an image-niche in the south Chapel contains the wheel of that Saint. The suggestion (p. 20) that at the restoration of 1868 "the niches were moved to the south Chapel for safe keeping" is negatived by the statement in Hussey's Churches of Sussex (1852) that there were then in the south Chapel "three niches with groined canopies, mutilated." Whatever the purpose of the mysterious window high up in the north aisle wall, it could hardly have been "for lighting the rood screen" (p. 33). The also mysterious objects shown by Hayley on John Low's shield are more likely to have been wolves' heads than chess rooks (p. 34). In two instances the late Rev. W. Hudson has misled the author: on p. 66 "Qualls debeat esse decanus" means "what manner of man the dean ought to be"; and on p. 65 the marginal note in the Taxation of 1291 must mean "appropriated to the house, or convent, (not 'to the Deanery,' as given by Mr. Hudson) of Battle." Another little point to be corrected in those future editions which the book well deserves is on p. 16 :- surely "gas heaters" in a church in 1845 is an anachronism? The "Brass Gas Pillars" of the footnote would have been standard lights.

Late-Medieval Weather in Sussex and Its Agricultural Significance, by P. F. Brandon, published November 1971 in Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers (vol. 54, article, pp.1-17, ISSN: 00202754) View Online
Abstract:The references to weather afforded by the compotus rolls of the manors of the Abbey of Battle and other ecclesiastical and lay manors in coastal Sussex between 1340 and 1444 are summarized and the evidence of floods during the same period is considered. The departures of the weather régime from that experienced during this century appear to be small, but significant climatic fluctuations are identifiable. Particularly favourable and adverse seasons and runs of these are enumerated; their agricultural effects are examined in the light of the yield ratios of the principal cereals. The implications of the fluctuations in regions closer to the climatic margins for cereals, particularly in the case of the adverse periods in the early fifteenth century, are noted.

Abstract:Battle Abbey, founded by William the Conqueror himself for his deliverance, was one of the greater abbeys of medieval England. Excavations in 1978-1980 at the eastern range, or dormitory range, uncovered in entirety the chapter house and the redorter. The project also revealed the complete sequence of development at the site from the time of the battle through to the Dissolution.

Abstract:1066 remains the most evocative date in English history, when Harold was defeated by William the Conqueror and England changed overnight from Saxon to Norman rule. It has long been believed that, according to the Bayeux Tapestry, Harold was shot in the eye by an arrow. M. K. Lawson argues that the tapestry was badly restored in the 19th century, and that we should not necessarily believe what we see. He goes to sources that depict the tapestry before that restoration and reveals some breathtaking insights which will revolutionize the way we view both the battle and the death of England's last Saxon king.

Review by John Bleach in Sussex Past & Present no. 125, December 2011:During preparation for interior redecoration at Battle church in 1845, many medieval wall paintings were uncovered. They weren't exposed for very long - the churchwardens had them whitewashed over within a twelvemonth, but not before they had been recorded by the artist W. H. Brooke. He may be familiar to SAS members through a short article by Sue Farrant in Newsletter 40 (Aug 1983), 338-9; perhaps, also, as an assiduous recorder in watercolour of the streets and houses of Hastings in the 1830s to 50s. But it is his record of the wall paintings which delights here, and forms one of the strengths of the book. Half a dozen Brooke studies are reproduced in colour, along with other historic views and modern photographs.
Braybrooke's investigation of Battle church begins with a tour of the standing remains and follows up with a chronological survey of the history of the church. His excellently illustrated study joins others - Taylor on Seaford (1st ed., 1937), Bullock on Hollington (1949) and Foxell on Amberley (2005) come to mind - as a book-length guide to the history and architecture of a Sussex medieval church.

Battle Abbey and Battle Churches Since 1066, by Keith D. Foord, published 1 November 2011 (164 pp. + 73 illus. & 36 plates, Battle Methodist church, ISBN-10: 0956959709 & ISBN-13: 9780956959706) accessible at: Battle & District Historical Society & East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:Although published by the Battle Methodist Church to raise funds for its new building project this work is, as the author states in his introductory chapter, 'an ecumenical book'. Dr Foord draws upon a rich variety of sources, from Searle's classic 'Lordship and Community' to unpublished papers belonging to the respective churches of Battle and documents located in the East Sussex Record Office. Included with the bibliography is an interesting list of web-sites, and the 164 pages of narrative benefit from a comprehensive index. The book is profusely illustrated with 73 black and white illustrations and 36 colour plates.

Abstract:This little Work owes its origin to a request made to the writer, on the occasion of the British Archæological Association holding their Congress at Hastings, that he would draw up some account of the Antiquities of the Town. As the writer grew interested in his subject, the unconnected descriptions of some of our antiquities became gradually woven into a continuous account of our ancient Port. The Paper was read before the Philosophical Society, and the Members and many other friends having expressed a wish that it should be printed, together. with a Paper on the Octo-Centenary of the Battle of Hastings, this Volume is the result.
In Part I., "On Hastings," the possibility of a Roman Origin is considered; an attempt has been made to fix the site of the Saxon Town, and the passage in Domesday relating to Hastings has been investigated with especial reference to the New Burg therein mentioned; also some data have been given for determining the grant of the Arms of the Cinque Ports.
