Abstract:
The development of the Hastings and Bexhill drainage systems since the early 1960s is described. Most of the 18 million investment has taken place in the last decade in several phases which were completed in 1988. Ultimate disposal of sewage is by long sea outfall. The new works include two pumping stations and rising mains leading to a header tower serving the outfall. A number of innovations are included to overcome technical problems and reduce costs. The paper concludes with some comments on operational aspects of the new works.

Abstract:
Bexhill-on-Sea has a long and eventful history, yet the fascinating past of this remarkable town is not as well known as it deserves to be. This is probably because its major development occurred very rapidly at the end of the 19th century - whereby it became the youngest borough in Sussex at its incorporation in 1902 - drawing attention away from its ancient origins and deep roots. In this new book the author traces Bexhill's entire story, from the earliest archaeological and geological evidence through its first documentary mention in 772AD, its relative importance as a Domesday manor with two churches and of land ownership by the bishops of Chichester, the dukes of Dorset and finally the earl's De La Warr. He uses previously unpublished paintings, drawings and photographs from the rich archives of Bexhills Museum lavishly to illustrate the events and developments explored and explained in his entertaining narrative. Despite its antiquity, Bexhill was still only a small village clustered around the Saxon church on the hill, today known as 'Old Town' until the Napoleonic wars made it into a garrison town until the building of a depot and parade ground for 5,000 soldiers of the King's German Legion. Though the railway came in 1846, it was not until the 1880's that the De La Warrs began to develop the town. By 1902 Bexhill attracted national attention by hosting Britain's first ever motor car race. The story of its best known building, the internationally important De La Warr Pavillion, built in 1935, is told in detail, as are the town's war years and its post-war changes. This very readable book will be warmly welcomed throughout the entire area.

First Valanginian Polacanthus foxii (Dinosauria, Ankylosauria) from England, from the Lower Cretaceous of Bexhill, Sussex, by William T. Blows and Kerri Honeysett, published 2014 in The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association London (no. 125 issue 2, article, pp.233-251)   View Online
Abstract:
A new partial skeleton of the armoured ornithischian dinosaur Polacanthus found in the Wadhurst Clay Formation (Valanginian stage) of Bexhill, Sussex is the oldest recorded occurrence of this taxon. Previous discoveries suggested that at least two armoured ornithischians occur in the Wealden succession: Polacanthus, which was mostly restricted to the Barremian, and Hylaeosaurus, which was recorded as present only in the Valanginian. The new discovery extends the stratigraphic range of Polacanthus into the Valanginian. Although these two taxa appear to be closely similar anatomically, their osteology now suggests they are not synonymous. The new specimen includes the first known jugal as well as a comparatively rare polacanthid plate/spine (splate) which probably comes from the shoulder (pectoral) area of these animals.

Seaside town regeneration and the interconnections between the physical environment, key agencies and middle-life migration, by Anthony Leonard, 2014 at University of Brighton (Ph.D. thesis)   View Online
Abstract:
Seaside resorts' fortunes have changed over the past half a century, and as a consequence many of the towns' physical environments and inhabitants have altered. Many grew in population size through in-migration, particularly as a result of retirement, which took over from the holiday industry as a process that changed the socio-economic and cultural structures of these places. Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex is among those seaside towns that have undergone such changes, fuelled by exogenous forces but also influenced by key agencies actions that have been a catalyst for altering the physical environment which encouraged the in-migration of middle-life people and the retired. This thesis analyses the effect of these changes and the role key agencies have had. In particular, it argues the changing nature of retirement in-migration of 'middle-lifers' (aged 50-70), those approaching or entering retirement, has had a profound effect on the town. This thesis disputes conventional retirement migration theories identifying a new form of 'lifestyle-affirming' migration.
