Abstract:The spire of Holy Trinity Church, Bosham, was the subject of study in 1998 whilst the structure was undergoing routine repair and maintenance. It can be demonstrated that, whilst the mast and cross-trees were replaced in 1841 and some other alterations have been made, much of the surviving structure, including most of the rafters, was built in a single phase of construction from timbers felled in the winter of 1405/06 and the summer of 1406. The Romanesque corbel-table at the top of the tower, which supports the spire, is discussed in greater detail than previously but it continues to be ascribed on comparative and stylistic grounds to the period c. 1080-1110.

Abstract:This engaging, meticulously documented study explores the complex, sometimes conflicting motives of Christian hebraists. It locates Herbert of Bosham's twelfth-century Psalms commentary at the nexus of the intellectual and social movements of his day, and elucidates the complex situations that contributed to Christians' divergent perspectives on the Jews. Was the twelfth century a rare period of collaboration between Christian and Jewish exegetes, or did anti-Semitism originate in the texts of the era's Christian polemicists? Modern scholars have been divided on these questions. This study of Herbert's commentary, which relied on the Hebrew commentary of R. Solomon ben Isaac of Troyes, articulates a more nuanced, integrated approach to medieval Jewish-Christian relations, and provides transcriptions from the unpublished manuscript.

Abstract:The tower and spire of this church have been carefully studied by Fred Aldsworth in recent papers in this journal. This study reassesses the whole of the architectural history of the church using both the documentary evidence and the archaeological evidence. For the latter, the changing use of the building stone types has been particularly useful.

Abstract:Evidence from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle demonstrates the existence of a substantial fleet of ships possessed by the Godwine family during the early eleventh century. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle further reveals that the port area for these ships was that of the waters of Chichester Harbour while specifically mentioning the Manor of Bosham. This article explores this evidence while examining the necessary extent of such facilities and their possible exact location. In particular, the site of a likely protected harbour is indicated together with additional areas that might have hosted facilities for the building, maintenance and winter protection of this fleet. It is also noted that it was this same fleet that came into possession of Harold Godwine, the last Saxon king of England.

Abstract:Two damaged, weathered marble portraits, both discovered in the 1780s at opposite ends of Roman Britain, one at Bosham in West Sussex, the other at Hawkshaw in Peeblesshire, are here re-examined and identified as portraits of the emperor Trajan. The Bosham head is interpreted as a post-mortem image of the deified Trajan set up at the margins of Chichester Harbour, probably during the visit to Britain by the emperor Hadrian in the early a.d. 120s. The Hawkshaw portrait of Trajan appears to have been refashioned from a likeness of Domitian and may originally have been part of a monument created to celebrate and commemorate the total conquest of Britain, in the early a.d. 80s, which was decapitated and buried during a period of unrest on the northern frontier.
