Abstract:Trial excavations on the site of a new post office on the north side of West Street, Chichester, were conducted by Mr. F. Cottrill in 1934 on behalf of H.M. Office of Works, and a report on these will appear in the Sussex Archaeological Collections. During the subsequent preparation of the ground for the new building, the site has been watched, with the permission of H.M. Office of Works, by Mr. W. Ll. White, to whom I am also indebted for the photographs on pl. lxxii, taken under great difficulties. Thanks are also due to Mr. Smith of H.M. Office of Works, and Messrs. The Chichester Amphitheatre: Preliminary Excavations, by Miss G. M. White, published April 1936 in The Antiquaries Journal (vol. 16 issue 2, article, pp.145-159) View Online
Abstract:The discovery of the Roman amphitheatre at Chichester was made by a local resident, Mr. Raymond Carlyon-Britton, to whom the writer is indebted for permission to use that knowledge.
Believing that an amphitheatre would be a normal adjunct of a Roman town of the size and importance of Chichester, Mr. Carlyon-Britton began an examination of the outskirts of the city in 1934, with the result that, early in 1935, the writer was shown the site which has since proved to be that of the amphitheatre. It lies outside the city on the SE. (fig. 1), just over 200 yards from the walls and divided from them by the now covered course of the Lavant stream, and about 250 yards from the East Gate, where Stane Street branches off north-eastwards. The line of approach from the East Gate to the amphitheatre has not been determined; a road may have led to it directly from the East Gate, or branched off, beyond the Lavant stream, from the road which no doubt ran eastwards along the coast.

Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1952:This is a most interesting volume and (as is only to be expected from his name) most carefully and accurately edited. Apart from its historic facts there are interesting accounts of installations and enthronements of Deans and Bishops and presents to placate those in high places in the State.

Review by H. J. [H. Johnstone] in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1956:The first in the official series to be known as "Chichester Papers" suggest a future bright with promise. The general editor, Mr. Steer, County Archivist for both East and West Sussex, knows intimately the material available for historians, antiquarians and others, the extent to which it has been utilised, and the most recent results obtained. He begins the first Paper with the remark "Chichester is a city of surprises." It is, indeed, in many senses. When Paper 1 was on its way through the press, for example, definitive evidence as to the exact date of Bishop Story's death suddenly emerged - just in time to be printed as a postscript. The monographs are uniform in size, printed in good type on good paper, and easy of reference because the stout paper cover is in each case of a different colour. There is plenty still to discover, and every hope of conditions favourable to such further additions to knowledge.

Review bu G. D. J. [G. D. Johnston] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1963:This is an extremely interesting volume showing the working of a small municipal corporation in the days before the Reform Act and very ably edited by Mr. Steer who contributes the useful introduction. The Minutes, though largely formal, throw curious lights on the topography of the City and its customs. The choice of Mayor always lay between two candidates and the "Ballot" was taken by casting coloured balls, one red and the other white, the outgoing Mayor stating which colour was for which candidate. Strangely enough (as Mr. Steer points out) the Candidate to whom the white balls were allotted was invariably elected. That this was not a formality (as in London) is shown by the record of the 24th September 1798 when "Ballots were delivered the white for Drew and the red for Ridge: when collected there were 15 white and 7 red ballots whereupon Drew was declared elected." In those days the Corporation levied no rates and its income was derived from lands houses and dues at Dell Quay. The general impression left is that (except the Recorder who had a deputy) the Members were regular in attendance and careful in the exercise of their duties.

Abstract:Survey of a project to record details of a large area of the city of Chichester which was about to be demolished to make way for a redevelopment scheme, noting the variety of documentary and other sources which are available for researchers investigating the history of the city. These include archaeological evidence which resulted from rescue excavations in 1970-1971, the large-scale redevelopment having made a major excavation project essential. As part of the research into the areas to be destroyed, each property was investigated and the documentary sources analysed using card indexes. On each was recorded any documentary reference, in some cases running to twenty cards per property (and totalling over 15,000 cards). These were then analysed and mapped, and a variety of summary sheets and indexes prepared from the cards.

Abstract:One of the best-known inscriptions from Roman Britain was found in 1723 at Chichester. It is a dedication on a slab of Purbeck marble of which the left-hand portion is lost, and the remainder was broken into four pieces during recovery. These are now bound by concrete and built into the wall of the portico at the west face of the Council House in North Street at Chichester (PL. IX). There the inscription is protected by a sheet of plate glass.

The Medieval Fields of Strettington, West Sussex, and the Evolution of Land Division, by Alan Nash, published 1982 in Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography (vol. 64, article, ISSN: 04353684) View Online
Abstract:The medieval fields of Strettington in West Sussex, England, are examined using a combination of field methods, documentary research and morphometric analysis. It is argued that the findings suggest field planning was practised in Southern England and its evolution was part of an overall accommodation of population increase.

Abstract:The Chichester area is ideally situated in one of the many beautiful parts of England. Historians and archaeologists are still uncovering and exploring new sites in the area which show activity from ancient history and the Roman period. This guide combines three aspects of life in the Chichester area - visitor's Chichester, historical Chichester and contemporary Chichester. Striking photographs combined with expert local commentary provide a memorable, visual record of a living city. Some of the photographs come from existing local sources; the great majority have been commissioned for the book and are the work of Iain McGowan FRPS. Richard Pailthorpe, of The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton, compiles the text, providing a detailed knowledge of the area's history and the fabric of people and places which enrich contemporary Chichester life.

The River Lavant is a small ephemeral chalk stream, which is culverted through the city of Chichester. In 1994 widespread flooding resulted when the capacity of the culverts was exceeded and the river overtopped its bank. Subsequently a local multi-agency Strategic Coordinating Group was formed, and a permanent flood alleviation scheme was developed through the planning process. In November 2000, after a period of very heavy rain, the River Lavant again threatened flooding. A large-scale pumping operation to divert some water around the city was brought into place by the Fire Brigade. Additional alleviation capacity was urgently needed, and local design resources were committed to adapt the permanent scheme for rapid implementation. The project comprised several major pumping operations and open channels over 5 km long with a choked diversion to protect the village of Merston. The A27 trunk road and the railway embankment carrying the mainline along the south coast lie across the route. Piped crossings were designed involving liaison with Railtrack and the Highways Agency. Documents for the whole scheme were put together while funding approval was sought. Despite the emergency conditions, both archaeological and ecological studies were undertaken, particularly for water vole, bat and badger habitats. On 4 December 2000 construction commenced in three packages costing a total of £1·3 million, with a programme to complete all but the main rail crossing before Christmas. However, further bad weather intervened, and the partially completed works were brought into use carrying floodwater less than two weeks later. In the New Year the rail crossing was constructed during a weekend possession. The paper focuses on the implementation of the project, including emergency response, multi-agency cooperation, team working, fast-tracking approvals, unique technical solutions, and rapid construction while ensuring compatibility with the full scheme.

Abstract:Excavation revealed two large ditches on the same alignment as the city wall. One of these may have been the Roman inner town ditch, re-cut at a later date. The other is likely to have been the medieval ditch constructed in 1378. Substantial post-medieval foundations had been laid immediately above the tertiary silts within this feature. These may have been associated with an episode of landscaping, involving an attempt to control the floodwaters of the River Lavant. Additional features included an early Roman hearth, a cellar of medieval or later date, a post-medieval property boundary, and a 19th- or early 20th-century well and outbuilding. A possible relict river channel was also located on the line of the 19th-century culvert.

Abstract:Chichester, as with most small nineteenth-century country towns, was home to light industry. In Chichester's case most of this was associated with the output from agriculture - woolstapling, tanning, malting, brewing, slaughtering etc. but there was also much in the way of cottage industry such as clock making. A notable except-ion to this, however, was the business known as Halsted and Sons. Founded in the 1840s, it expanded from being an ironmongers into a full-scale engineering manufactory, sited not only in the heart of the city but in the exclusive residential area known as the Pallants.

Abstract:Excavation on land formerly occupied by Rowe's Garage on The Hornet, Chichester revealed a large, mid-first century AD ditch, adding to the series of possibly defensive ditches previously identified immediately east of the later Roman town. During the rest of the Romano-British period, the site was used for small-scale domestic settlement, crop-processing and other agricultural activities. After the fourth century AD much of the western part of the site was quarried for clay and gravel. A handful of features provided evidence for the medieval and later suburb known to have developed outside the Eastgate from the thirteenth century; any more ephemeral remains were probably destroyed during the construction of the modern Rowe's Garage itself.

Abstract:A look at the dark side of life, Victorian-style, when nothing was quite as it seemed and a public execution could be an entertaining family day out. Murderers, poachers, thieves, pickpockets and vagabonds all went about their business with impunity. Crime took place on the streets, on public transport, in homes, pubs, prisons, asylums, workhouses and brothels - it was all part of everyday life in Chichester in the late 1800s. It was madness and mayhem in those weird and wonderful times
Review by Sarah Hanna in Sussex Past and Present no. 120, April 2010:Despite its lurid title, the seven stories in this book reveal some fascinating details of social history, from early nineteenth century to post-World War II Chichester. The two earliest incidents, the trial and execution in 1818 of John Holloway for the murder of Thomas Parr, and Emery Spriggs' shooting of his wife Rebecca in 1830 are recounted against the background of social conditions of the times, for instance the presence of large numbers of redundant soldiers following the end of war with France, with terrible living conditions and little to do but drink, and rural unrest due to agricultural unemployment in the 1830s. Another theme is the development of modern policing organisation and methods, illustrated by the history of Chichester's traditional October Sloe Fair; in the account of the tragic murder of eleven year old Vera Hoad in 1924; and of Ellen Harding's trial and acquittal in 1936 for the murder of her baby son. More success was achieved by the time of the Second World War, in solving three of four murders committed in the area between 1941 and 1944, mostly involving service personnel. The final story deals with the mysterious disappearance of Commander Crabb in 1956, and the unsatisfactory identification of a partial body found in 1957 in Chichester Harbour.
The book is well referenced to primary sources such as local press reports and to archives and secondary sources. Some may disagree with the use of invented dialogue (particularly in the first chapter), and there are unfortunate slips such as spelling 'formerly' meaning 'formally'. There is no index, but the stories are illuminated by frequent black and white illustrations. Such scenes may still be witnessed in the pleasant streets of Chichester, as highlighted by local press reports, providing much to interest future historians.

Abstract:This article focuses on the social dynamics underpinning change and continuity during the Iron Age-Roman transition period in the area of Chichester and its immediate hinterland. Although the primary data is derived from a reassessment of selected burial groupings from the St Pancras cemetery, data from other sites has been used to put St Pancras into a wider context. Though it is generally accepted that the arrival of Roman power and the establishment of a post-Conquest client kingdom in this area influenced cultural change, the reassessed data suggests that external influences more probably merged with local traditions. As individual and social group identity is partly expressed through manipulating material culture, this article examines the social dynamics of those further down the social scale, by re-evaluating specific 1st-century AD indigenous pottery types and their significance as indicators of change and continuity. It places indigenous pottery in a wider context by examining the nature of sub-regional social preferences and the relationship between the Chichester area and the peripheral environment. The results suggest there was an initial degree of resistance to change amongst certain social groups, whilst others were in constant dialogue and renegotiation over what types of material culture could be perceived as culturally acceptable. This indicates the active role of the existing population in fashioning their own particular lifestyles.

Abstract:Chichester is a city with an unbroken history that stretches back to Roman times or earlier. Its main city streets follow the original pattern laid out almost two thousand years ago while the buildings that line many of those streets, when not medieval in origin, most frequently date to Georgian or Victorian times. The changing use of these structures and the activities of their occupiers is the theme that runs through this book. In making direct comparisons between past and present it has been possible to succinctly demonstrate altered habits in shopping, entertainment and travel together with changes that have been imposed on many of the buildings of the area.

Chichester City Walls, by Andrew Westman, published 2012 (124 pp., Chichester District Council, ISBN-10: 0957301804 & ISBN-13: 9780957301801) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries
Review by David RRudkin in Sussex Past & Present no. 130, August 2013:For anyone with an interest in urban defences and those of Chichester in particular, this excellent publication will be greeted with great pleasure.
Chichester can boast the most intact circuit of Roman town defences in southern England with 80% still standing in some form. However, they have had a chequered history which has been a cycle of care when there has been a threat of attack, or when their civic amenity has been recognised, and wilful neglect when the threat has gone away or better access through the walls was required.
Happily, the city walls are receiving more tender loving care today than in the past, thanks largely to the City Walls Project, created by the City Walls Partnership, a like-minded group of organisations with an interest in the walls and their care, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It was this group that commissioned Museum of London Archaeology to produce Chichester City Walls, involving a considerable amount of documentary research and the generous help of local archaeologists and archivists with long involvement in the archaeology and history of the city.
It was a revelation to read that there have now been fifty recorded archaeological interventions into the defences since the first in 1885. This was the uncovering of the foundations of one of the bastions of the South West quadrant. It seems very appropriate that the fiftieth intervention was also the uncovering of the foundations of a nearby bastion which had been revealed by geophysical survey.
The author, Andrew Westman, looks at almost two millennia of history, beginning with the positioning of the original town in relation to the road system and noting that evidence found in 2010 may indicate the existence of the original pomarium, or boundary ditch. The construction of the defensive ditches, banks, walls and gateways occurred considerably later in the latter half of the 3rd century AD, with the bastions probably added in the mid 4th century AD.
For the next 500 years the town was virtually abandoned and its walls left to decay, until they were adapted to form an Anglo-Saxon burgh in the 870s AD. After this there followed periods of neglect and repair including their bombardment by the Parliamentarians during the Civil War. Later it was proposed to demolish them completely in case they were taken by the French. Fortunately this didn't happen and their future became slightly more secure as their amenity value was recognised.
This is an invaluable study of the city walls to date, but recent investigations of potential bastion sites has demonstrated that there is still more to be learned.

Abstract:An archaeological excavation within the grounds of the Chichester Festival Theatre, Oaklands Park, Chichester, West Sussex has revealed evidence of predominately late 2nd- to late 3rd-century activity some 300m north of the northern gate of the Roman walled city. Several Roman features, including a late 3rd-century cremation burial, were identified. An earlier excavation in the vicinity of the site located evidence of a possible timber-silled building also of Roman date.

Abstract:William Sabatier's 1798 Description of the Roman military works in the neighbourhood of Chichester has a strong claim to be one of the first proper archaeological landscape studies. Although not by any means the first to describe or survey the entrenchments and Roman roads in the vicinity of Chichester, Sabatier was the first to undertake field survey and to describe the results in detail, and the first to illustrate them on a large-scale map. His identity, however, has remained something of a mystery. How could such a gifted fieldworker have proved to be otherwise so anonymous? Where did he develop his skills, and what was his connection with Chichester? Surely 'Sabatier' must be a pseudonym! This paper identifies the man and reveals the family connections and the career that led him to a five-week 'explorement' of the archaeology around Chichester in September and October 1797.

Abstract:Ken Green's densely illustrated history of Chichester gives a fascinating account of the varied and surprising events, personalities and wider developments that created the town of the present day. In a series of vivid historical snapshots, he takes the reader through thousands of years of history, from the earliest known prehistoric settlement to the thriving but well-preserved town of today. He writes of the castle and the cathedral and the medieval layout of the town's streets, which still survives. Recent developments are described too - hospitals, schools, churches, chapels, Victorian terraces, modern estates, the railway and modern roads. At the same time he gives a telling insight into the significant events and individuals who shaped the town's history. His book is illustrated with hundreds of photographs, maps and drawings from the author's collection, from the Chichester Observer and the West Sussex Record Office.

Abstract:Excavations on land at Osborne House, Chichester revealed evidence for activity dating from the early neolithic to the post-medieval period. Some residual early neolithic worked flint, as well as a few sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery, were recovered from later features. A field boundary ditch provided evidence for Romano-British agricultural activity, and residual Romano-British finds, including pottery, ceramic building material and copper alloy objects, were retrieved from later features. The main focus of activity is related to the clay quarrying of late 12th, 13th and 14th century date, located in an unoccupied waste area within the outskirts of Chichester. It is likely that clay extracted from the site was used for pottery production, such as at the kiln sites near Southgate just north of the site, as it was a common practice to obtain clay in the vicinity of the production site. A number of possible medieval and post-medieval pits, some of which might have been used for rubbish disposal, were also recorded.

Abstract:How much do you really know about Chichester and its long and ancient history? You probably know about the cathedral's fake medieval tower, but do you know where to find the one time location of its eight medieval churches, the city gaol or the house with connections to the Indian mutiny? Do you know where the earliest map of the city is to be found, laid out in cold stone? Maybe also, you might not know that Chichester was once the unhealthiest city in the country, or nearly so, and that one of its former MPs was the first to die in a railway fatality. On the lighter side, do you know about the Chichester sausage, the underground toilets that never were or the city's resident English Eagle? In this very different approach to Chichester's history, the author blends the serious with the not so serious, seeking out an unusual approach to some known topics while dwelling on the lesser known and humorous.

Abstract:In sixth-century Sussex - the kingdom of the South Saxons - social life centred upon the alehouse. Throughout the Middle Ages, brewing remained a domestic occupation: beer was sweet and flavored with herbs and spices. By 1600, when Henry Stanton was brewing in Crawley, the use of hops to flavor and preserve beer had become standard practice. The growth of the large commercial brewers was a product of the industrial revolution, from which era dates famous West Sussex family concerns such as Henty of Chichester, the Ockendens of Crawley and Constable of Littlehampton. That these are no longer with us is due to a long process of acquisition during the twentieth century. With the takeover of the last of their line, King & Barnes of Horsham, in 2000, brewing in West Sussex was left to just a handful of small independents. Yet today there are nearly thirty breweries in this part of the county. This fully illustrated and informative book pays homage to the brewing heritage of West Sussex while celebrating the current outpouring of creativity known as the microbrewery revolution.
Chichester Archdeaconry Depositions 1603-1608, edited by Peter M. Wilkinson, published June 2017 (vol. 97, xlviii + 310 pp., Sussex Record Society, ISBN-13: 9780854450794) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 19218] & The Keep [LIB/509529] & West Sussex Libraries View Online
Abstract:In April 1604, Robert Johnson, rector of West Chiltington, had a difficult Sunday. His brother Henry's wife, 'having a child in her arms' dumped it near the rector's seat while her husband shouted, 'Here is your child; take it, for it is none of mine' - and left. Robert's response was to bring an action for defamation, and members of the congregation were called to testify. Their eye-witness accounts of the event are recorded in the deposition books of the bishop of Chichester's consistory court ¬along with those from hundreds of other cases heard in the 16th and 17th centuries. The depositions of such courts provide a unique record in describing such incidents which figure nowhere else in local or national archives. The consistory court proceedings rarely involved major events of the great or even the good: they focused on disputes between individuals over relatively mundane matters, principally matrimonial disagreements, the making of wills and the collecting of tithes - and of course defamation. But by their faithful recording of the witnesses' statements they have preserved a rich legacy of minor but often unique incidents which paint a picture of everyday life (and often its seamier side) in rural Sussex.
The stories they tell can be unexpected, often entertaining, and sometimes puzzling. Is there some recorded naval history behind the case of Agnes Daniell of Selsey, accused of bearing 'barters' by her profligacy with 'men of war'? Elsewhere they can tell of social tensions - evidenced by the road rage spat between James Pellett, vicar of Madehurst, and Richard Hobbes, one of the local gentry, who demanded: 'God's blood or God's wounds, will thou not give way: I am a better man than thou' - to which the vicar retorted that Hobbes 'not long before was but a capmaker.' Many of the cases reveal the serious impact of local gossip, particularly that involving the reputation of women. Agnes Nashe of Middleton understandably contested rumours that after a dubious sojourn in London she had 'burned' local Sussex men with venereal disease.
Thomas Herold of Pulborough reacted to a different kind of gossip when a neighbour asserted that 'he was a witch and did bewitch her husband's cattle'.
These nuggets of local material can also provide serious contributions in major historical areas - particularly in documenting farming activities. A dispute about tithe in Kirdford furnishes one of the earliest accounts of 'devonshiring' by which Wealden heathland was burnt and grubbed to produce improved agricultural land. Another tithe dispute in Oving describes how sluices were built to prevent tidal overflow from ruining the hay on the marshland.
While records of this period in other archives reflect the activities of the rich and owners of property - or the misdeeds of the seriously criminal - those of the church courts depict something much closer to the everyday life of the lower classes. Although their stories have survived in the archives of many English dioceses, they have not yet been fully exploited by historians: the secretary hand of the clerks does not make for easy reading and the patches of formulaic Latin can seem forbidding. But the difficulties can be overcome; the stories that emerge can be moving and entertaining; and above all they help us to hear the words of ordinary people and to see life through their eyes four centuries later. This book enables us to share the range of their experiences by publishing all the depositions from a register that covers the years 1603 to 1608. Perhaps these accounts of everyday life in rural Sussex may encourage others to mine such records in this county and beyond.

Church Surveys of Chichester Archdeaconry 1602, 1610 & 1636, edited by Dr Andrew Foster and Joan Barham, published 2018 (vol. 98, xlix + 218 pp, Sussex Record Society, ISBN-13: 9780854450800) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/509706] View Online
Abstract:This volume provides transcriptions of church surveys conducted within the Archdeaconry of Chichester in the early seventeenth century, covering most of what is now deemed to be West Sussex. The first survey was commissioned by Archbishop John Whitgift in 1602 and was part of a national campaign. The survey of 1610 was a result of the primary visitation of Bishop Samuel Harsnett, while that of 1636 was under the auspices of Bishop Richard Montagu, but almost certainly connected with the Metropolitical Visitation of Archbishop William Laud of 1635. These surveys provide valuable evidence of the struggle by clergy, churchwardens and lay patrons to maintain the basic fabric of their churches and chapels, while also ensuring that the buildings were fit places for worship according to the standards being set for the times. The material may be usefully compared with the results of similar surveys conducted in 1686 and 1724, also published by the Sussex Record Society (Volume 78).
