Review by G. D. J. [G. D. Johnston] in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1959:
This is No. 21 in the Society's series of Church Guides and (as would be expected from the Editor's name) fully up to the very high standard of the previous Guides. In addition to the historical introduction and architectural description, there is a list of the "Fittings" (including a Communion Cup of 1567); and of the Monuments and Memorials (the oldest being to Thomas Turner 1671 with an illegible slab which may be to Constance Mawse 1598 and the fine wall monument to Henry Poole 1580) and of Rectors and Vicars (the earliest being in 1090) which indicates absentees and pluralists.

Abstract:
A year after the opening of the Keymer & Ditchling Gas Works in 1867 (situated in the goods yard of Hassocks station) a public meeting of Ditchling ratepayers was called at the "Bull Inn". At this meeting it was agreed to light the village under provision made in The Lighting and Watching Act of 1833, whereby a parish could chose to elect gas lighting inspectors to oversee and administer the installation and operation. It was laid down in the Act that the inspectors (of whom there were to be no more than twelve and no less than three) must be resident ratepayers assessed on a rateable property valuation of not less than £15 per annum and they must by law meet on the first Monday of the month at noon.
At this first meeting, held on the 19 October 1868, seven inspectors were elected - to be known as the Inspectors of the Ditchling District for Lighting, and it was also agreed that they should have the power to call for and raise an annual rate in the sum of £45. It was subsequently discovered that four were ineligible, being shareholders in the Gas Company, and a further meeting was held on the 14 December 1868 where the remaining three were re-elected, namely Wm Kensett, John Attree (who was appointed treasurer) and Stephen Andrews. Mr Thomas Sinnock Jnr was appointed to collect the rate (set at 6d (2.5p) in the pound) at a salary of 5% of the rate collected. Sinnock was also the Secretary to the Gas Company.

The CHATFIELDs of Sussex are a large family and many SFHG members can probably count a CHATFIELD in their family tree. Like many Sussex families, over the centuries the CHATFIELDs were at every level of society from the lowest agricultural labourer to gentlemen as well as a baronetcy. While most of the family branches were members of the established church, some preferred to adopt the Baptist faith. This leads to problems for the family historian. Baptists were suppressed by the established church especially its the 17th and 18th centuries and so vital records, especially births, christenings and burials were either not recorded in formal registers or inconsistently at best. A greater number of marriages were recorded. presumably to assure their legality but even here records are not consistent. To develop family trees it is therefore necessary to turn to other documents. Frequently adherence to a non-conformist religion was not stated specifically but certain patterns emerge that may suggest that a family was non-conformist. Such was the case with my own CHATFIELD ancestors and particularly my seven-times great-grandfather John CHATFIELD and his children, one of whom, Jane is also my ancestor.

A Beacon Collection: A gentle and light-hearted journey through the centuries in Ditchling, by Richard Allen, published 2012
Abstract:
This book, by Richard Allen, contains 12 amusing and interesting stories of life in St Margaret's church from the middle ages to the early 20th Century. They include early priests who were mostly absent from Ditchling, a squabble over who should sit in the Vicarage pew; a war of words between the Vicars of Ditchling and Westmeston; a busy Georgian vicar; a forged five pound note and the restoration of St Margaret's Church by the Victorians.

"There are also WASHINGTONs buried in the churchyard of the ancient church of Ditchling, in Sussex, but whether these were connected with the family of George WASHINGTON the writer has been unable to discover." (David McLean, Sussex County Magazine, 1930)
My mother, née Sylvia WASHINGTON, was a long standing member of the SFHG. When she began tracing her WASHINGTON family history in Sussex she rapidly established a line to the Ditchling WASHINGTONs. She was aware that an ancestral line of George WASHINGTON, first President of the United States, had been traced to Petworth. Unsurprisingly, she was keen to see if she could trace her family to Petworth, and thence back to the ancestors of George WASHINGTON. She never quite got there. But armed with her research and the benefits of the material now more easily accessible via the SFHG website, it may be that the link can be reasonably established.

On a lazy hot summers day last June here in our home in France, finally relaxing after our daughter's wedding in our local village of Vendoire, a pause for thought. This was a time indeed to reflect on our family. What shall we do now my wife asked, as we both felt rather flat and empty after such a wonderful event?
Where is that old box that came from your cousin on the Isle of Wight containing your Uncle Frank Fuller's stuff, asked my wife Jacqueline?
I started a search of the garage and old packing boxes and eventually carne across a tatty cardboard box, sent to me almost 15 years ago, which I dusted down and brought it into the salon. On opening the box, it revealed photographs and this ignited and generated the first spark of discovery.
