The Geology of the country around East Grinstead, Sussex: With Report of Excursion to Hartfield, Holtye Common, Forest Row, Ashurstwood and East Grinstead, Saturday, June 16th, 1923, by Henry B. Milner, M.A., D.I.C., F.G.S., published 1923 in The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association London (no. 34 issue 4, article, pp.283-300)   View Online
Abstract:
The country to be described covers an area of some thirty-six square miles and is embraced by parts of Sheets IV. and VI. and the whole of Sheet V. of the six-inch Ordnance Survey maps (Sussex). It is a continuation westward of the author's work in the Tunbridge Wells district, some results of which were published in a recent number of these proceedings. The area includes the town of East Grinstead with Felbridge, and extends as far east as Ashurst (Kent); to the north it takes in Cowden (Kent) and a small strip of the Surrey-Sussex border-land; southward it extends to the northern fringe of Ashdown Forest and includes the picturesque country from Kingscote by Forest Row to Hartfield and beyond.
It has been the author's hope that by a combination of six-inchmapping and detailed petrographic investigation of the rocks occurring in the more disturbed area of the Weald, new light would be thrown on some of the still debatable points concerning its tectonics and on the origin of the sediments composing it, anticipations yet further strengthened by the results of the work in this district.

A Cottage Hospital Grows Up - The story of the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, by E. J. Dennison, published 1963 (London: Anthony Blond) accessible at: & West Sussex Libraries & East Sussex Libraries
Review by M. J. Leppard in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1963:
This is the story, written by a member of its General Practitioner staff, of the hundred years' existence of the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. The hospital has three main claims to fame: it was the fifth cottage hospital to be founded in the country; its Working Men's Hospital Fund, founded in 1903, may possibly be the oldest of its kind in the country; and from its selection at the outbreak of war to be a plastic surgery centre under the late Sir Archibald McIndoe it has grown to be a leading centre for plastic surgery, jaw injuries, dental and ophthalmic surgery, and research.
The author has based his narrative on all surviving records, including the case-book for the first forty cases treated, and newspaper reports, and so has produced a full account, judiciously and readably written, of a not very widely known aspect of county history. Inevitably more modern times are treated more fully and here the rather annalistic account of events and people may be of little interest to people outside the hospital's immediate area; but the details of the taking over by the National Health Service and of what is involved in running a large modern hospital should have a compensating general interest.
Physically the book is very well produced. The only noticeable misprint is on page 22 where "Mr. P. J. P. - the Postmaster" should be Mr. T. J. P.-, i.e. Thomas Jackson Palmer.
It is worth pointing out that East Grinstead has another connection with pioneering work in treating the sick: the foundation in 1854 by the Rev. J. M. Neale of the nursing sisterhood of St. Margaret, the first such order founded in the Church of England. The interesting thing here is that the founder of the Hospital, Dr. J. H. Rogers, was Neale's assistant Warden at Sackville College and also one of his bitterest enemies. One cannot help wondering whether perhaps one of his motives in founding a hospital for the poor was to rival the successful work of Neale's sisterhood. Neither Neale's nor Rogers' surviving papers appear to throw any light on the relation between the two undertakings.

The Revival of England's White House, by Tony Aldous, published October 1986 in History Today (vol. 36, issue 10, article)   View Online
Abstract:
A look into a building designed by an early American architect situated in Hammerwood Park near East Grinstead in Sussex.
Four Years ago England's only major building designed by Revolutionary America's first architect was derelict and on the verge of complete collapse. Today it hosts dinner parties and musical evenings ? but thanks to a court ruling the public may not be able to visit it at all in 1987.
The victim of this 'Mad Hatter' situation is Hammerwood Park near East Grinstead in Sussex, built in the Greek Revival style in 1792, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who three years later emigrated to America. There he became architectural adviser to Thomas Jefferson and the designer of much of the new Capitol in Washington as well as the porticos of the White House. Hammerwood was built originally as a hunting- lodge for John Sparling and throughout the nineteenth century was a family home. But with the Second World War it fell on hard times ? requisitioned for troops, it was subsequently left empty, then turned into flats. The rock group, Led Zeppelin, bought Hammerwood in 1973 intending to use it as a home- cum-recording-studio, but nothing came of restoration plans; after that massive vandalisation and the removal of tons of lead from the roof allowed the house to become saturated with water and a haven for fungus, wet and dry.

The Guinea Pig Club, by D. R. Andrew, published May 1994 in Aviation Space Environmental Medicine (vol. 65, no. 5, article, pp.428-433)
The "Guinea Pig Club" was formed in 1941 by a group of airmen who had sustained grievous injuries - mostly serious burns of the hands and face - and been treated by a team of plastic surgeons led by a remarkable New Zealander, Archibald McIndoe, at the Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead in England. The most senior "Guinea Pig" was Tom Gleave, a fighter pilot who had been shot down during the Battle of Britain, and who carried out his duties as "Chief Guinea Pig" until his death in June 1993. This paper describes Tom Gleave's arrival at the Queen Victoria Hospital, and the formation and development of The Guinea Pig Club

Abstract:
This is the true story of Second World War fighter pilot, Richard Hillary.
After being shot down in September 1940, Hillary spent several months in hospital, undergoing numerous operations; a member of Archibald McIndoe's 'Guinea Pig Club'. Originally published in 1942, just months before he died in a second crash, The Last Enemy recounts the struggles and successes of a young man in the Royal Air Force.
Told through Hillary's eyes, this incredible story shows that even in our darkest moments there is a glimmer of enduring hope.

Abstract:
This addition to the "Britain in Old Photographs" series brings together a collection of black-and-white pictures spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawn from family albums, local collections and professional photographers, they show the way things were and how they have changed. Every photograph is captioned, providing names and dates where possible, revealing historical and anecdotal detail and giving life to the scenes and personalities captured through the camera lens. Bringing together all aspects of daily life - celebrations and disasters, work and leisure, people and buildings - the collection should inspire memories, as well as serve as an introduction to visitors.

Abstract:
The history of the Guinea Pig Club, the band of airmen who were seriously burned in aeroplane fires, is a truly inspiring, spine-tingling tale. Plastic surgery was in its infancy before the Second World War. The most rudimentary techniques were only known to a few surgeons worldwide. The Allies were tremendously fortunate in having the maverick surgeon Archibald McIndoe nicknamed the Boss or the Maestro operating at a small hospital in East Grinstead in the south of England. McIndoe constructed a medical infrastructure from scratch. After arguing with his superiors, he set up a revolutionary new treatment regime. Uniquely concerned with the social environment, or holistic care , McIndoe also enlisted the help of the local civilian population. He rightly secured his group of patients dubbed the Guinea Pig Club an honoured place in society as heroes of Britain s war. For the first time official records have been used to explain fully how and why this remarkable relationship developed between the Guinea Pig Club, the RAF and the Home Front. First-person recollections bring to life the heroism of the airmen with incredible clarity.

An Early Vernacular Hammer-Beam Structure: Imberhorne Farm Cottages, East Grinstead, West Sussex, by J. Clarke, published 2005 in Vernacular architecture (vol. 36, article, pp.32-40) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/501316] & British Library   View Online
Abstract:
Imberhorne Farm Cottages 1-3 (TQ 373384) are, from the exterior, Victorian farm-workers' cottages. The outward appearance, however, hides the impressive remains of Imberhorne Manor House, containing an early archbraced false hammer-beam roof, tree-ring dated to 1428. The structure is compared to other surviving arch-braced examples and shows strongest similarities to the design of Westminster Hall, but lacking its elaborate mouldings and sculpture. The lack of adornment enables the detail of the design to be determined, showing considerable strengthening of the braces and retention of the hammer beam and post as single elements undivided by the arch. The construction of such a building within thirty years of the completion of Westminster Hall makes this property particularly important within the milieu of the developing structure of the arch-braced hammer beam, and demonstrates the influence of Westminster Hall in a vernacular context.

"The Maestro": a pioneering plastic surgeon - Sir Archibald McIndoe and his innovating work on patients with burn injury during World War II., by Menedimos Geomelas, Mojtaba Ghods, Andrej Ring and Christian Ottoman, published May 2011 in Journal of Burn Care & Research (vol. 32, issue. 3, article, pp.363-368)   View Online
This article describes McIndoe's revolutionary methods of burn treatment and rehabilitation of patients with burn injury and outlines his personality traits that made him one of the most important plastic surgeons of the twentieth century. As a consultant plastic surgeon to the Royal Air Force, he set up a plastic surgery unit in the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. By using biographical data and photography, McIndoe's work on burns treatment and the challenges he faced are presented. Before World War II, little was known about the treatment of severe burns and their complications, and even less was done about the rehabilitation and social reintegration of patients with burn injury. McIndoe changed all that by developing new techniques for the management and reconstruction of burn injuries. He helped his patients become and get accepted as a normal part of society again. The patients with burn injury treated by him formed the Guinea Pig Club. Sir Archibald Hector McIndoe, a charismatic plastic surgeon with an uncanny instinctive knowledge of psychology, recognized early that the rehabilitation of a burned patient was as important as the reconstruction of his physical body. His therapeutic approach to patients with burn injury was mental and physical.

Until I broke with the tradition, all my researched TURNERs, as our name describes us, had earned their living in the wood trade. At school, woodwork for me was easy. I did all the required exercises to the master's satisfaction and was rewarded with an introduction to the lathe. During one session in the woodwork shop, a Maths master called in to talk to his Woodwork colleague and as he passed me working at the lathe, said "Ah, Turner, practicing your ancestral craft, I see." - and that was many years before I became an addicted family historian

Archaeological investigations at the former East Grinstead Pottery works, Garland Road, East Grinstead, West Sussex , by Dylan Hopkkinson, published 2013 in Sussex Archæological Collections (vol. 151) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 18616] & The Keep [LIB/507730] & S.A.S. library   View Online
Abstract:
Archaeological investigations at the former site of Rentokil House, Garland Road, East Grinstead revealed surviving structural elements of the East Grinstead Pottery works which was established in 1855 and demolished in 1971. The structures identified represent the foundations of the Pottery workshop, including the foundations of the bottle kiln and an extensive yard area with discrete brick-laid flooring around a circular brick-built clay-processing feature. An associated assemblage, including red earthenware products of the Pottery, consisted of flowerpots, large jars, bowls and dishes, which evidence the utilitarian vessels produced during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The excavated assemblage was compared to the collection of vessels previously collected from the Pottery works and housed at East Grinstead Museum, which has helped to refine the product range, especially towards the end of production.

Abstract:
East Grinstead is a West Sussex town with a rich and fascinating history. Founded in the twelfth century by Gilbert D'Aquila, the town flourished with the opening of a bustling market in Cantelupe Road in 1884. Well-known for its many points of interest, including the historic High Street and St Swithun's church, East Grinstead has become a vibrant community and tourist destination. Its popularity continues to increase with the recent arrival of the Bluebell Railway. East Grinstead Through Time contains some of the collection of over 16,000 photographs owned by the East Grinstead Museum (seen to the right). The town's first museum opened in 1925, and moved to its current premises in 2006. Depicting buildings that are either long-gone or substantially altered, authors Dorothy Hatswell and Simon Kerr hope to evoke fond memories for longstanding residents and spark an interest in the town's history for its many visitors.

Abstract:
There is a history of East Grinstead that is hidden from view, lost under the modern town's bustling surface. The town's High Street is dominated by one of the longest continuous runs of fourteenth-century timber-framed houses in England, houses that have witnessed many of the secrets contained in this book. Many famous faces have resided in the town over the years, from Patrick Moore to Neil Gaiman, and many surprising individuals have had brief encounters with the town, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh and John F. Kennedy. St Swithun resided in the town, and his story, which has become English lore, can all be traced back to events within the town.
Featuring photographs, anecdotes and places to visit, Secret East Grinstead goes behind the façades of the familiar to discover the lesser-known artefacts of East Grinstead's fascinating history. Its markets, buildings and churches each have a tale to tell, and its proximity to London has meant the town has received a whole host of interesting events. Join authors Dorothy Hatswell and Simon Kerr on a journey off the beaten track, and discover the real East Grinstead.
