Review by G. D. Johnson in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1953:
This is a transcript of the Survey of the Manor made in 1597 collated with two rentals of 1658 & 1659; a book of Court Rolls 1742-1865; and a set of maps dating from the first half of the 19th century; with a lucid and exhaustive commentary and explanation by the Editor. The volume is especially noticeable for the very helpful set of maps taken from the current Ordnance Survey on which the Editor has (after being at great pains first to identify them) marked by verge lines and reference numbers the parcels mentioned in the Survey. The Volume is a delight and should be in the hands of everyone interested not only in manorial customs rents and incidents, but also in genealogy and in the topography of this part of the County and evolution of its Place-names.

Abstract:
The note in Bulletin No. 7, p.27, on 1973's exposure of this site was very interesting. The "earlier operation or unknown forge" referred to could perhaps be the remains of "Darfold Furnace", spelt Darvolld and Darvoll in Thomas Glidd's 1568 lease. The early Derefold, in Netherfield Hundred, became Darvel and Darwell, today's Darwell Hole having been Derfould Hole in 1608. The 1574 listing of "j furnace in echingham" possibly led Straker to place "Darfold" at Burgham Farm on the Limden, but the lease makes clear that Sir Robert Tirwhitt's whole extensive property was called Echingham Park and contained both furnace and forge. In spite of correction by the S. R. S., confusion still remains. (Vol.53)

Scenes from Provincial Life: Knightly Families in Sussex, 1280-1400 [the Etchinhams of Etchinham, the Sackvilles of Buckhurst, and the Waleyses of Glynde], by Nigel Saul, published 1 October 1986 (216 pp., Oxford University Press, ISBN-10: 0198200773 & ISBN-13: 9780198200772) accessible at: The Keep [LIB/500094] & West Sussex Libraries & East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:
Looking at the world of the medieval gentry through the eyes of three families in East Sussex - the Etchinhams of Etchinham, the Sackvilles of Buckhurst, and the Waleyses of Glynde - Scenes from Provincial Life presents an insightful picture of what day-to-day life was like for a member of a knightly family in the Middle Ages. It draws on charters, estate documents, and even information gleaned from buildings and churches of the day to provide an illuminating account of the central preoccupations of landowners - estate management, military service, provision for relatives, and arrangements for schooling.

Abstract:
R. F. Hunnisett, in his introduction to Sussex Coroners' Inquests 1485-1558, refers to the fact that there were several inquests involving aliens, French, Brabantines and Flemings, who were often found to have killed their fellow countrymen. One such case, in 1521, concerned John Ongerfeld of Etchingham, 'hammersmyth', who has been mentioned already by Awty, and Cleere and Crossley, as indicating an early start to iron forges in the Etchingham area.

Abstract:
In the late 15th century, a monumental brass was laid in the church at Etchingham (East Sussex) to the memory of two never-married women, Elizabeth Etchingham, who died in 1452, and Agnes Oxenbridge, who died in 1480. This article investigates the possible social meanings of their brass, with a particular eye to Alan Bray's recent interpretations of other funeral monuments dedicated to same-sex couples

Abstract:
For over a century cartographers placed Etchingham Forge to the S of the railway from Hastings to London. The modern O.S. 1:25,000 map has followed this tradition, along with Straker and Cleere & Crossley. They have placed the forge at TQ 701266 near Forge Cottages (Forge House), and their Gazetteer entries cast doubt on whether a bay ever existed, since the railway passes through the site. The pond "if any", they say, is dry and the working area has "some incomprehensible banks". Recent fieldwork has shown that the working area of the site has been misplaced and was N of the railway, which runs through the pond. In fact, Etchingham Women's Institute identified the location correctly in their 1957 pamphlet.
