Radical Duke: Career and Correspondence of Charles Lennox, Third Duke of Richmond (1735-1806) , by Alison Olson, published 1961 (Oxford University Press) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries
Review by L. F. S. [L. F. Salzman] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1961:
In this book Dr. Olson gives a sketch of the career of Charles, 3rd Duke of Richmond, and a selection of his letters to contemporary statesmen. Upright, hardworking and unpopular, his considerable ability failed to achieve success, largely because of a tactlessness which led to his quarrelling with everyone from King George III downwards. Dr. Olson is mainly concerned with his political contacts, and there is little about the good work that he did at the Ordnance Office, and still less about his life at Goodwood, where his building activities were largely responsible for converting his great revenues into great debts.

Abstract:
This is an edition of the surviving correspondence of the two Dukes, which is preserved among the Goodwood Archives in the West Sussex Record Office and the Newcastle Papers in the British Library. The letters, which can be read as an almost continuous narrative, centre on a number of major themes in national political history, and in particular on the War of Austrian Succession; the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion; the fall of Walpole; the rise and fall of Carteret; and the careers of the Pelham brothers. At the same time they are equally revealing about the local scene, as they depict the activities of two aristocratic magnates dominating their respective halves of the county of Sussex. Richmond's career is well illustrated, as are county politics and society; the general elections of 1734, 1741 and 1747; and the important campaign against the smuggling gangs in the 1740's.
Previously unpublished and little known, Richmond's correspondence has been characterised by Professor L. C. Curtis in his Chichester Towers as "those wonderful unguarded letters to Newcastle, into which Richmond was wont to pack his horse sense, his sizing up of men, his humour, and so much of his affection". In his Duke of Newcastle, Professor Reed Browning pointed out that "the Newcastle papers in the British Museum reveal Richmond as a racy correspondent whose unblushing epistolary manner, in our own era of easier standards need no longer be confined to the archives." The volume has an introduction chronicling the careers of the two Dukes; a chronology; and a comprehensive index.

Abstract:
Explains how current restoration has revealed much about James Wyatt's work at Goodwood between 1771 and 1806. Modern writers have assumed that Goodwood as it now exists, with its unique plan apparently forming three sides of an octagon, is the belated and incomplete realization of the 3d Duke's and Wyatt's original conception. The purpose of this article is to show this was not the case.

Abstract:
The Charlton Hunt began in the 1670s and is the earliest documented pack of hounds to be entered to fox alone. It attained a popularity among the gentry which has never been equalled. From the reign of Charles II, almost every noble family in the land had a representative at Charlton, including almost half of the Knights of the Garter. Its first proprietor had been the ill-fated Duke of Monmouth, but among other claims to uniqueness, it was the first hunt to establish a club, the members building themselves a dining hall.

Abstract:
The estate of Goodwood is glorious not only for its famous racecourse and motor racing circuit but also for its magnificent art collection. This superbly illustrated book reveals the treasures of Goodwood. Curator Rosemary Baird tells the story of the Dukes of Richmond, from the birth of the 1st Duke (son of Louise de Kéroualle and Charles II), who purchased Goodwood. She describes events such as the Duchess of Richmond's famous ball, from which officers were called to fight in the Battle of Waterloo ('some arrived at the field of battle in silk stockings and dancing shoes') and how, with wealth largely derived from a tax on coal leaving Newcastle, the Richmond family developed Goodwood and acquired works of art to adorn it. In particular the book focuses on the great 18th-century collections of the 2nd and 3rd Dukes. The 2nd Duke was a leading exponent of the Palladian movement, building Richmond House on the banks of the Thames at Whitehall as well as an extension to Goodwood. He commissioned from Canaletto two views of the Thames, which were painted from Richmond House. The 3rd Duke patronized some of the greatest painters and architects of the day - at the age of 24 he gave the unknown George Stubbs his first commission - and collected French furniture, tapestries and porcelain.
Review by Sue Berry in Sussex Past & Present no. 114, April 2008:
The new book on Goodwood should encourage visits to this fascinating building and its setting. Lavishly illustrated and well written by Rosemary Baird, the Curator of the Goodwood Collection who uses her superb knowledge of the House, its collections and its setting to give a clear account of the family's life, at their home in London and at Goodwood.

Goodwood Revival, by Ubi Weber, published 22 September 2014 (204 pp., Milano, Italy: Skira Editore, ISBN-10: 8857222934 & ISBN-13: 9788857222936) accessible at: British Library
Abstract:
This book is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing through the photographs by Uli Weber. Every year Goodwood stages a race meeting for the kind of cars and motorcycles that would have competed at this historic circuit during 1948-1966, offering visitors the opportunity to leave the modern world behind and join motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, Richard Attwood, John Surtees and Derek. The internationally acclaimed photographer Uli Weber has realised a unique portrait of the event, the people and of the circuit that echoes to the spine-tingling bark of golden-age Grand Prix cars from the 50s and 60s, thundering sports and GT cars, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors.
