Abstract:
The following are the chief results of this investigation of the Horsham district
  1. The existence of small outcrops of Grinstead Clay has been shown in the southern part of St. Leonard's Forest.
  2. The Upper Tunbridge Wells Sand has an unusually large thickness, viz., about 180 feet, compared, for instance, with its thickness at Tunbridge Wells (80 ft.).
  3. The Horsham Stone - using the term in its broad sense so as to include the intercalated beds of clay, is a lenticular deposit, and does not keep to definite horizon.
  4. There are three distinct lithological types of Horsham Stone: a flaggy calcareous sandstone, a fissile stone and a thickly bedded stone.
  5. The Horsham Stone bears a strong similarity to the Tilgate Stone (Wadhurst Clay) in its microscopic structure.
  6. The absence of limestone bands in the Weald Clay below the Horsham Stone is noted.
  7. Attention is drawn to several interesting features concerning the rivers of the district.
This work was carried out with the aid of a grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, which help the author gratefully acknowledges.

By-Ways - A series of 18 Field Path Rambles round Horsham, by Ernest G. Apedaile, published 1929 (Horsham: Price & Co.) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries
Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, August 1929:
Mr. Apedaile, who is Chairman of the Society of Sussex Wealdmen, has done a public service in compiling and publishing these useful descriptive itineraries.
Besides serving its primary purpose of guiding pedestrians of to-day, the booklet is of permanent value as a record of paths, boundaries and other minor features of the countryside now existing, but which in course of time may disappear. Copies should be preserved for this purpose, and similar surveys of other areas are much to be desired.

Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, August 1931:
The volume dealing with the Horsham centre has now been published. It contains a mass of information about Sussex families in that neighbourhood which is invaluable to searchers.
The print is good and the matter well set out. The issue of subsequent volumes dealing with various centres of Sussex depends largely on the support which the present one receives.
The death of Mr. Comber, followed with tragic suddenness by that of Sir William Bull, who had undertaken the publication of the series, will be fresh in the minds of members of the Sussex Archaeological Society. All those who are interested in genealogical matters should support the issue of the subsequent volumes which must otherwise remain in MS.

Review by G. D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, February 1948:
This (as the Author says) does not purport to be a History of Horsham or Sussex; it is a collection of nine articles on different subjects, which must represent the labour of a lifetime devoted to collection of information, and all those interested in Sussex owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Albery for the preservation of the material and its publication in a form available to the general public.
Part I (the Manor and Borough) is a valuable collection of information; but the undated script (p. 28) stated by the Author to be in 14th century style and dated by him as the 16th century, reads more like the flamboyant style of the later 18th century, and the reference to the River as the Arun shows it cannot be earlier than Stuart times. Part II (Horsham Common) is marred by the expression of the Author's views as if they were undoubted facts. Part III (Crime and Punishment) contains little new or peculiar to Sussex. Part IV (the County Goal), Part V (Quaker Persecutions), Part VI (Smuggling), Part VII (Napoleonic Wars) and Part VIII (The 1830 rioting) are interesting collections of materials. Part X (Transport) is only a summary of comparatively recent history; for instance there is no reference to the older roads such as that through Denne Park.

Some sedimentary structures from a Weald Clay Sandstone at Warnham Brickworks, Horsham, Sussex, by J. E. Prentice, published 1962 in The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association London (no. 73 issue 2, article, pp.171-185)   View Online
Abstract:
Sedimentary structures in a sandstone in the Weald Clay are described. They are groove casts, possibly formed by plant fragments being moved by water, air-heave structures, scour structures, load casts, syndepositional faults and folds, trace fossils and ripple structures. From their study it is concluded that the sandstone was deposited by the sudden inrush of sediment-laden water; and a comparison is suggested with the crevasse sands of modern deltas.

Iron ore workings near Horsham, Sussex, and the sedimentology of Wealden clay ironstone, by B. C. Worssam, published 1972 in The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association London (no. 83 issue 1, article, pp.37-55) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 5347]   View Online
Abstract:
The distribution of old workings, or 'minepits', for clay ironstone in an area between Horsham and Crawley is shown on geological sketch-maps. The geological structure of the area is described in outline. The old workings, except for those in two anomalous patches, are restricted to two argillaceous units in the Upper Tunbridge Wells Sand and to an ironstone horizon some 2 m. below the Horsham Stone in the Weald Clay. Slags from two bloomery sites are described. The amount of ore dug from the minepits is estimated to correspond roughly to the requirements of local blast furnaces, of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century date. Depletion of iron ore reserves is suggested as a factor deciding against resumption of the iron industry in the area after the Civil War.
Bringing into consideration evidence from the whole Wealden area, the origin of clay ironstone is discussed in relation to the environment of deposition of the Wealden Beds. Non-spherulitic ironstone occurs at five main Wealden horizons. In the Weald Clay, ironstone development appears to be related to cycles of sedimentation.

Abstract:
Henry Michell's diary offers new insights into 19th-century Horsham. His attitudes and aspirations show the Victorian middle-class environment in which he lived. His interests ranged over the major issues of as well as upon subject matter of more immediate relevance to Sussex. The book will thus be of interest to historians and to a reading public that enjoys social history and biographical literature. The scope of the diary and Michell's life embraces the Corn Law controversy, the railway 'mania', the American Civil War, Parliamentary reform, and the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The Rowland family has been settled in the parish of Horsham from early in the 16th century, originating from one of three brothers living there. It was then of sufficient standing for two of these brothers to be buried within the parish church. Abstract:
The first documentary reference to this site is in a survey of the timber and woods belonging to Sir John Caryll in 1598. It was part of the manors of Chesworth and Sedgwick which belonged, like the Forest of St. Leonard, to the Dukes of Norfolk and were confiscated, then restored, and then confiscated again, during their chequered careers under the Tudors. The Carylls, who were extensive proprietors of ironworks, having no less than six furnaces and four forges in the early seventeenth century, leased the manors of Chesworth and Sedgwick from the Crown, in succession to Sir Thomas Fynes, following the attainder of the Duke of Norfolk in 1572. The forge is not mentioned in the 1574 lists of ironworks and probably dates from the period between 1574 and 1598, during which time Edward Caryll and then his nephew, Sir John Caryll, acquired or took control of the forges and furnaces in St. Leonard's Forest, and at Gosden, Burningfold and Pallingham.

Abstract:
The Diaries of Sarah Hurst records the day to day life of a young woman who lived in Horsham, Sussex between 1759 and 1762. Consequently, this book can claim to be one of the most important sources of information on life in the 18th century. The Diaries of Sarah Hurst not only create a vivid portrayal of the local town's people they also provide a fascinating insight into the social history of women, as they contain the intimate thoughts and feelings of a young woman and her relationships with the people around her. Sarah's intimate diaries can't help but touch the reader as she writes about her love for Henry Smith, a man who was thirteen years older than her.
Review by Sue Berry in Sussex Past & Present no. 121, August 2010:
Diaries can tell us much about how a person sees his or her world and when they can be linked with others of the same period or close to, even better - for one person's view of a time, person and place may be very different from another's. Sarah Hurst's diary predates that of John Baker of Horsham but they knew the same people and this Susan Djabri uses well to show how the two writers had very different views of the same people. Sarah's diary is of the same date as Thomas Turner of East Hoathly who, like Sarah, went sea-bathing along our coastline. The difference in their approach to going bathing is a comment on the difference between the lifestyle of the affluent Hurst and the struggling Turner as well as their personalities. Both diarists are from businesses. Sarah expects to help in her family's shop but also writes poetry and has a lively social life as many urban Georgian women did. One would like to know why she was so secretive about her marriage, not telling her family until afterwards. The diary ends before that story unfolds.
Many women like Sarah worked in businesses in Georgian England and a considerable number ran their own. The formidable Mrs Dring of Brighton ran a shop and a lodging house, Isabella Pullen built her own. Their role is understated in most Georgian studies but a start has been made in Hannah Barker's The Business of Women - female enterprise and urban development in Northern England 1760-1830, Oxford University Press, 2006. Diaries such as this with the excellent background research by the editor, street directories, inventories, wills and other sources should help us to understand the role of women in Georgian Sussex.

Abstract:
The collection of prehistoric flintwork by Sylvia Standing around Southwater, near Horsham, has provided a fascinating insight into Mesolithic hunter-gatherer activity in the area. The presence of Horsham points on some of the sites alongside other types of microlith, tranchet adzes and other implements suggests they may be associated with a reduction in human group mobility.

Sam MITCHELL was for 20 years from 1875 assistant to Horsham's first Town Clerk, and as Clerk he served the town for a further 24 years. The extensive reports in the local paper of his resignation and obituary give a unique insight into his life in Horsham at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
Sam was born in Horsham in August 1852, the son of Isaac and Emily MITCHELL. Isaac was a brewer. Emily was Isaac's second wife (his first wife Harriet HULL had died in childbirth) and the mother of his three children Sam, Walter Edward, who became a drapers assistant, and Lewis Murray, who was a carpenter like his grandfather William WADEY.

Abstract:
Horsham has a long and rich history, with surviving written records dating back over a thousand years, but this book delves back even further into prehistoric times, to a period millions of years ago when the site of the town was near the edge of a floodplain, around which dinosaurs roamed. The book starts with fascinating clues to the culture of some of the earliest settlers, provided by artefacts discovered in and around Horsham. The author chronicles Horsham's rapid development as a market town and borough in medieval times, the turbulence of the Tudor and Stuart eras, and life in the Georgian period. She examines the impact of the railway and, later, the motor car. The trauma of two World Wars and the town's drastic expansion in more recent decades are also explored. Numerous stunning illustrations bring the history of this ancient Wealden town to life. Sources, including previously unpublished documentation, and oral recollections paint a vivid and comprehensive picture of Horsham's history. This book will prove invaluable for anyone interested in, and fascinated by, Horsham's past.

Abstract:
In Horsham Through Time 19th and 20th century photographs from Horsham Museum's archives have been matched with those taken recently by members of Horsham Photographic Society, now in its 60th anniversary year. These show how many of Horsham's most treasured buildings have survived and found new uses. Horsham's ancient parish church, castellated Town Hall and medieval burgage houses remain largely unchanged alongside modern shopping centres in Swan Walk and Pirie's Place, while other old buildings have been adapted for office or residential use. Some former streets have disappeared under the dual carriageway, built to relieve damaging traffic congestion, but an exciting new public space has been created in The Forum, where the history of Horsham and its surrounding district is imaginatively portrayed on a giant sundial.

The inspiration for this piece was two old-fashioned stoneware bottles. The first carries the inscription Scrase & Co, Horsham, Ginger Beer. My branch of the family has known of such bottles for many years and members have collected examples that are now spread from East Anglia to Manitoba. My late brother's research had also revealed that another family member (an uncle of the proprietor of the ginger beer company) operated as a brewer around Burgess Hill in the 1870s. My son discovered the second bottle while working in the Southampton area. It is inscribed Scrase's Brewery Ltd, Southampton. This raised questions as to whether the operations were related. Such questions became more intricate when an web search revealed a further Scrase's Brewery near Lamplough, Victoria. Australia. Furthermore, the proprietors of this were either called Scrase & Co or Scrase Bros.

Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian vol. 19 no. 3, September 2010:
This book will unfold year by year from 1914 to 1919 the lives and conditions of Horsham families as they were forced to accept and adjust to the hardships and sacrifices of the Great War. In its 862 pages and many photographs it is a fascinating and informative reference book and research tool for anyone with ancestors from Horsham who fought in the Great War, as it is indexed so that the reader can look up specific names with ease and read personal profiles of the military careers of those who were called upon to make the supreme sacrifice, the battles they fought, as well as the family history.
Also listed are the many major battles with vivid detailed descriptions and photographs of individuals, regiments, battle scenes where Horsham servicemen fought and died, many personal letters from the Front, some war-related poetry and extracts from numerous unit daily war diaries, as well as a variety of maps giving the location of battles.
Alongside this there is a section on decorations, campaign medals and memorial entitlements to Horsham casualties with a photograph of each medal, for example The Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, Allied Victory Medal, etc together with a detailed description of why they would be awarded.
The selected index covers the various Regiments on both sides, as well as casualties named on Horsham's War Memorial. The author has also researched those casualties who are not included on the War Memorial. I found it easy to find two of my ancestors and read all about their families, the hardships they endured and details of the battles they fought.

Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian vol. 19 no. 2, June 2010:
Part of the research undertaken by people looking for ancestors is to visit graveyards - we wonder what did our ancestors look like and what did they do during their lives?
This attractively produced booklet takes us on a journey through Denne Road cemetery in Horsham, now declared a site of nature conservation interest, a quiet and beautiful place today and a green oasis near the heart of a busy town. It opened in 1852 after St Mary's churchyard became full and in 1856 was the only permitted town graveyard when other, non-conformist, graveyards were closed. There is a very interesting history of the cemetery from its beginnings up to date and the information on its development gives the reader a social history of Horsham and highlights the lives of individual past inhabitants, some of whom are buried there. There are excellent photographs of people, gravestones and life in Horsham over the 19th and 20th centuries. A comprehensive index of people mentioned in the book, as well as those whose gravestones are shown, will be of great help to anyone researching their family history.
An excellent publication invaluable to anyone interested in Horsham burials.

Review by Margaret Pearce in Sussex Family Historian in vol. 19 no. 8, December 2011:
This captivating pictorial record compares the landscapes of yesteryear with today's busy townscapes. Few Sussex town centres have changed as dramatically as Horsham and this book is a nostalgic guide to discover what remains of old Horsham with coloured photographs of past streets and buildings, shops and businesses and people at work, alongside the modern Horsham. Some of you may recall a piece I wrote for the Sussex Family Historian some time ago about my Horsham ancestry. In it I mentioned my great great great grandfather William FOREMAN, who was born in Horsham in 1789. In 1809 he married Sarah LAKER who was born in Horsham in 1792. William was a farmer at Bournes Hill, and after at Amies Mill on the outskirts of Horsham. William and Sarah had six sons and six daughters between 1810 and 1825. Sarah died in 1860 and William, then aged 71, married Ellen WELLER, who was barely 20 years old. She bore him a further four sons before he died in 1872.
William (senior) eldest son William (junior), my great great grandfather, was born in Horsham in 1816. For many years he was a baker in East Street and later Queen Street, Horsham. In 1837 he married Elizabeth MANVELL who was born in Horsham in 1812 and they had five sons and five daughters between 1839 and 1857. All their sons became bakers or confectioners and it was this generation that started the migration of my branch of the FOREMAN family to Brighton during the latter part of the nineteenth century

Reminiscences of Horsham: Recollections of Henry Burstow, edited by Helen Poole, published 21 March 2016 (Horsham Museum Society) accessible at: Horsham Museum Society
Abstract:
Published in 1911 it transformed our idea of Horsham and became a classic of working men's autobiographical writing. Written with quill pen or steal nib, dipped in ink and printed by hand set type on thick rough paper Henry Burstow's Reminiscences of Horsham was a child of the Edwardian era. Now friends of Horsham Museum using the latest digital technology and laser printing have created a new version of the masterpiece for sale. Henry Burstow's Reminiscences of Horsham has been re-imagined for today's readers, to re-awaken our understanding of Horsham in the age of Queen Victoria.

In the 1930s William ALBERY (1864-1950) of Horsham made copious extracts from the Sussex Assize records 1560-1800 in the then Public Record Office, London. He made use of these extracts in compiling his Millennium of Facts of The History of Horsham and Sussex 947-1947 which he finished in 1939 but owing to the Second World War this was not published until early in 1947. He used the war years to bring his original work up to date, finding a Saxon charter of 947 that enabled him to write a selective history of Horsham covering a thousand years. ALBERY's 270 pages of notes were typewritten in two copies: one remains in Horsham Museum and the other was given in January 1946 to Brighton Reference Library and has now passed to East Sussex Record Office. It is this latter copy which has been used to make this present work.

Abstract:
In sixth-century Sussex - the kingdom of the South Saxons - social life centred upon the alehouse. Throughout the Middle Ages, brewing remained a domestic occupation: beer was sweet and flavored with herbs and spices. By 1600, when Henry Stanton was brewing in Crawley, the use of hops to flavor and preserve beer had become standard practice. The growth of the large commercial brewers was a product of the industrial revolution, from which era dates famous West Sussex family concerns such as Henty of Chichester, the Ockendens of Crawley and Constable of Littlehampton. That these are no longer with us is due to a long process of acquisition during the twentieth century. With the takeover of the last of their line, King & Barnes of Horsham, in 2000, brewing in West Sussex was left to just a handful of small independents. Yet today there are nearly thirty breweries in this part of the county. This fully illustrated and informative book pays homage to the brewing heritage of West Sussex while celebrating the current outpouring of creativity known as the microbrewery revolution.
