Abstract:Cobb's Mill at Sayers Green near Hurstpierpoint (TQ 295190) is an excellent example of Victorian millwrighting, the four pairs of stones being driven initially by either water or steam power. The steam plant was later replaced by a gas engine with its own gas producer plant. As the mill only stopped working 15 years ago the plant was in fairly good condition and in July 1979 a working weekend was held by Sussex Industrial Archaeology Society members in order to arrest further deterioration and to survey and record the structure and plant.
The working weekend was most successful; the cog pit was cleaned and greased, the gas engine cleaned and wire brushed and the bright parts coated with a film of protective oil, the gas producer derusted and painted, the mill race cleared and brickwork and weather boarding repainted and replaced. It is hoped in the future with the continuing cooperation of the enthusiastic owners of the mill, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. F. Jackson, that it can be restored to working order.

Abstract:Hurstpierpoint College was founded at Shoreham in 1849 and moved to its present buildings in 1853. One of several schools in Sussex founded by Nathaniel Woodard, 'Hurst' was probably the most important and certainly the largest school in Woodard's grand scheme to provide a good Church of England education. Edward Lowe, the School's first headmaster, was one of the Victorian 'giants' among headmasters. His career is remarkable not only for making Hurst a notable public school, but also for his contribution in national educational developments.

Abstract:Keen historians of the Victorian age will welcome the publication of a diary written by Sussex farmer Frederick Weekes of Brighton and Hurstpierpoint. His diary written between 1937 and 1852 provides snapshots of rural life as Sussex emerged from the Georgian era to embrace the Victorian age.
Edited for publication by Ian Nelson and Tony Bower of the Hurst History Study Group, Weekes' notes will be of particular interest to genealogists because they include references to many of the tradesmen living in and around Mid Sussex.

Review by Juliet Clarke in Sussex Past and Present no. 116, December 2008:Like his predecessor, Miss Grace Weekes, who (probably) penned "A slight sketch of a picture of Hurst" in 1825, the author's enthusiasm for his town has led him into print, and here he covers all levels of society. If you want to know about the workings of the Poor Law in Sussex, or have an interest in Hurstpierpoint itself, you will find much in this elaborately bound volume.
The author's experience as a teacher is evident as he communicates imaginatively and clearly, describing the reality of the treadmill and following beneficiaries of the Poor Rates into other counties, even other continents.
It shows painstaking research and illustrates well the town's development through the late Georgian and early Victorian eras. This is a book for dipping into with its short chapters, helpful index and plentiful illustrations.

The gardens, orchards and park at Danny in Hurstpierpoint: an analysis of the estate map of 1666, by Paula Henderson, published 2010 in Sussex Archæological Collections (vol. 148, article, pp.145-156) accessible at: W.S.R.O. [Lib 18613] & The Keep [LIB/500366] & S.A.S. library View Online
Abstract:An estate map of Danny dated 1666, held in the East Sussex Record Office, is a little known, but extremely interesting, record of the Elizabethan house in its mid-seventeenth century setting. The following short essay is an analysis of that map, considering the architecture of the house itself, which is shown in two bird's eye views: one on the map and the other, quite possibly by another hand, in an inset detail. Many of the divisions of the landscape around the house - indicated by the walls, hedges and courts - appear to be contemporary with the house, while the planting and other features represent later work. Estate maps, such as this one, reveal important information about how landscapes developed and changed over time. The Danny map also provides clues about the personality and interests of the man who owned the estate at the time, Peter Courthope.

Preview:Despite his patriotic given name, my Great-Great Grandfather, English CORNEY, was unjustly convicted and transported by the British courts . . . or at least that is what the evidence suggests. But this little bit of family history is not just about that apparent miscarriage of justice; it is as much about the strength of purpose and courage of Elizabeth PENFOLD, wife of English CORNEY.
