Abstract:
This site was first surveyed for the Wealden Iron Research Group by Peter Ovenden in 1972, although the estimated length of the bay was later revised. As part of a continuing programme to make measured survey drawings of water-powered furnaces and forges, the site was resurveyed in January and February 1999. Frith is an extensive site with large quantities of blast furnace slag confirming a working life in excess of a hundred years. The streams which fed the pond for the furnace, rise in springs at the foot of Blackdown, less than a mile to the west of the site, and downstream provided power for three other ironworks: Shillinglee Furnace, Mitchell Park Forge and Wassell Forge.

Henry and Elizabeth BARNES were my husband's great great grandparents. Henry BARNES was baptised on March 26, 1780 in Northchapel - the sixth child and third son of John BARNES (1743-1814) and Mary PHILP (1744-1811). Henry first drew himself to public attention when Ann LILLYWHITE of Northchapel took out a bastardy order against him in April 1801. He was adjudged to be responsible for her pregnancy and ordered to pay expenses towards her lying-in. Henry finally paid his dues in December 1802. Because I have been unable to trace the birth of a child to Ann I suspect that the child may have been stillborn. Henry does not appear to have been implicated when Ann had another illegitimate child a few years later.

A Revisited History of the Eade Family: Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire 1250-1990, by Robyn Lane and Andrew Eade, published 30 November 2014 (408 pp., Hampshire: John Owen Smith, Headley Down, ISBN-10: 1873855699 & ISBN-13: 9781873855690) accessible at: British Library
Abstract:
We follow the fortunes of the Eade family over seven and a half centuries as, with an eye for the main chance, they attempt to climb the ladder of prosperity by constructing, amassing and then protecting their land holdings over the centuries while diversifying into trades such as bricklaying and stonemasonry. From 13th century Chiddingfold in Surrey they spilled over the adjacent county border into West Sussex around Northchapel and Lurgashall and then into Bramshott and Headley in Hampshire via the Sussex settlement of Linchmere, relentless- ly pursuing their aspirations. When all of this eventually began to unravel in the Hampshire village of Hawkley at the end of the 18th century, family fortunes stuttered on for a while with a Market Garden Business located in Petersfield. However it was courtesy of the empire's Armed Forces that poverty was staved off and Eades visited much of the globe then marked pink. The available records provide a fascinating glimpse into past times throughout the centuries where events such as the plague, diseases, war and market downturns make their indelible mark on a family line that survives to this day.
