Review by L. F. S. [L. F. Salzman] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1954.:The manorial muniments of Petworth for the seventeenth century are remarkably complete, and include a terrier and a great map of 1610. It is largely round this map, reproduced in a series of sectional drawings, that Lord Leconfield has built his book. He has taken the reader on a personally conducted tour round the demesnes, the parks, the copyholds, and finally the town, pointing out the position and history of the various tenements - amongst which we meet such pleasant names as Robin Hood's Garden, Widow Magicke's Laces, and Belchambers Garlands. From the map is reproduced the interesting drawing of the old Petworth House, of which nothing survives in the present building except the chapel and the medieval cellar. This house had water laid on to its offices from the public piped supply, of which Lord Leconfield traces the history from its instalments by a rector about 1500, down to its re-organisation in 1782 by the Earl of Egremont. There are sections on the iron works and the mills; and the first two chapters show very clearly the actual working of the manorial system at this period. The author points out that 'the seventeenth century witnessed a rash of mortgaging.' This is true of other places than Petworth, but it may be doubted if elsewhere it would be possible to draw up such a list as is given on p. 13 of the mortgagees arranged under their respective trades; it is a subject worth wider study. Is the assertion (also on p. 13) correct that a condition of a widow obtaining her 'free bench' was that she should have been a spinster when she married? I do not think that this was a normal requirement. A very small point: on p. 67 reference to land 'purchased of Person Dyrig ' is followed by the author's comment that this 'would appear to mean a person named Derrick.' But it must mean 'Parson Derrick' and probably refers to William Derrick who was presented to the vicarage of Chidham in 1579 and held that living until his death in 1625. The book has a full index, and is produced with the usual excellence of the Oxford University Press.

Abstract:Burton Mill stands at the north end of a large artificial lake called Mill Pond, at NGR SU 979180, 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Chichester - Petworth road and 2½ miles (4 km) south of Petworth. The building, illustrated on the cover, served first for milling grain and later for generating electricity, and was preceded on the same site by an iron forge. Burton House, to the estate of which the mill belonged until the mid 20th century, is ¾ mile (1.2 km) to the south-west. A second lake above Mill Pond, called Chingford, Chilford, or Gilford Pond in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, is also artificial, but seems to have been created as a landscape feature, perhaps c. 1740 when landscaping work was apparently being carried out in Burton Park. The present mill building is of four storeys in brick and stone, and seems to date from the late 18th century. It is built into the dam of the lower lake in such a way that its third storey opens onto the road that runs along it; the ground floor is some 13 ft (4 m) below. The mill originally had two overshot wheels, one on each side.

The stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Lower Greensand of the Hoes Farm Borehole, near Petworth, Sussex, by C. R. Bristow, A. A. Morter and I. P. Wilkinson, published 1987 in The Proceedings of the Geologists' Association London (no. 98 issue 3, article, pp.217-227) View Online
Abstract:The Hoes Farm Borehole provides a cored sequence through the Atherfield Clay, Hythe Beds and the lowest part (Fittleworth Beds) of the Sandgate Beds. Macrofaunas and ostracods have been collected from many levels and, for the first time, the Ostracoda from the English Aptian have been examined over an extended sequence with good macropalaeontological control. A 0.7 m seam of fuller's earth, recorded near the base of the Hythe Beds, yielded an ostracod fauna of bowerbanki Zone age. A new stratal unit, the Hoes Farm Member, mainly of deshayesi Zone age, has been defined at the base of the Hythe Beds.

English Immigrant Voices: Labourers' Letters from Upper Canada in the 1830s, by Wendy Cameron, Sheila Haines and Mary McDougall Maude, published May 2000 (696 pp., McGill-Queen's University Press, ISBN-10: 077352035X & ISBN-13: 9780773520356) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries
Abstract:Collected from published, archival, and private sources, these letters place the Petworth immigrants in the context of their times and challenge the image of English immigrants to 1830s Upper Canada as officers and gentlewomen. Wendy Cameron, Sheila Haines, and Mary McDougall Maude have carefully annotated the letters to sketch the stories of individual writers, link letters by the same author or members of the same family, and explore the connections between writers. What eventually happened to some of the writers is also revealed in this engaging collection. English Immigrant Voices provides a valuable insight into the rural poor and their experiences in emigrating to a new land.

Abstract:Using a rich collection of contemporary sources, this study focuses on one group of English immigrants sent to Upper Canada from Sussex and other southern counties with the aid of parishes and landlords. In Part One, Wendy Cameron follows the work of the Petworth Emigration Committee over six years and trace how the immigrants were received in each of these years. In Part Two, Mary McDougall Maude presents a complete list of emigrants on Petworth ships from 1832 to 1837, including details of their background, family reconstructions, and additional information drawn from Canadian sources. Paternalism strong enough to slow the wheels of change is embodied here in Thomas Sockett, the organizer of the Petworth emigrations, and his patron, the Earl of Egremont, and in Lieutenant Governor Sir John Colborne in Upper Canada. The friction created as these men sought to sustain older values in the relationship between rich and poor highlights the shift in British emigration policy. In these years of transition immigrants sent by the Petworth Emigration Committee could accept assistance and the government direction that went with it, or they could rely on their own resources and find work for themselves. Once the transition was complete, the market-driven model took over and immigrants had to make their own best bargain for their labour.

Review by Maria Gardiner in Sussex Past and Present no. 116, December 2008:An account of the life and work of Reverend Thomas Sockett of Petworth (1777 -1859), who was born in East London, the son of an impoverished bookseller. The early part of this fascinating book deals with his transition from penury to rural clergyman under the patronage of Lord Egremont at Petworth House. In his journal recording his life from 1805 to 1807, reproduced in full, he describes playing tennis and practising French with refugee aristocrats, seeing Nelson embark from Portsmouth on his final voyage, and time spent with the Egremont children reading the classics such as Horace and Demosthenes.
We are given a picture of his domestic life, but the authors are primarily interested in his role as the thoughtful and concerned Rector of Petworth. Although he was a friend of aristocrats, he worked hard to improve the lives of the poorest of his parishioners, particularly through the teaching of literacy which he saw as a route to morality. Together with Lord Egremont, he organised the emigration to Canada of many of his parishioners, including his own oldest son, George. He was also in frequent disagreement with the guardians of the local workhouse about the treatment of its inhabitants.
Sheila Haines and Leigh Lawson have presented an insight into life in West Sussex from aristocrat to peasant at a time of political, cultural and economic upheaval. The book is meticulously researched and evidenced and should prove a valuable resource for local history students, and anyone else who likes looking into other people's lives.

"Some banglyng about the customes": Popular Memory and the Experience of Defeat in a Sussex Village, 1549-1640, by Andy Wood, published April 2014 in Rural History (vol. 25, issue 1, article, pp.1-14, ISSN: 0956-7933) View Online
Abstract:This article deploys a body of remarkably detailed witness statements to interrogate the nature of popular memory and social conflict in Petworth, Sussex. These depositions are located in two specific contexts: a struggle between the tenants of Petworth and the ninth earl of Northumberland (1591 - 1608) and the broader pattern of resistance and negotiation in the village between the 'commotion time' of 1549 and the calling of the Short Parliament. The essay presents a micro-history of local struggles over land, rights and resources and the findings open up questions within the recent historiography of early modern social relations, undermining the notion that authority was flexibly negotiated between ruler and ruled. Instead, it locates negotiation within social structures that gave a powerful advantage to the gentry and nobility. In this respect, the essay builds upon the return in social history to questions of economic inequality and imbalances of political agency.
