Review in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1930:
The second, and concluding, volume of the English Place-Name Society on Sussex has followed the first at a commendably short interval, and brings to completion a very notable piece of work, which must long remain a standard book of reference for all students of Sussex history.
This volume deals with the place-names in the three eastern rapes; and as these are larger in area than the western rapes the material to be worked through is more extensive. There is no further introductory matter, though many readers would have welcomed comment from Professor Mawer and perhaps fresh light on the early settlement of Sussex. But after the individual names have been disposed of there is, as in the other volumes in the series, a chapter on field names, and another on the distribution of the various elements. Finally there is the indispensable index to the two volumes.

Abstract:
On 24th November 1932 our Fellow Major C. J. ffoulkes exhibited a mysterious object that had been found during the restoration of Pevensey Castle. Almost immediately afterwards H.M. Office of Works produced from the same site an object about which there can be no doubt whatever. It is a visor of what is possibly the most striking of all medieval headpieces, the hounskull or pig-faced bascinet. Furthermore, it is the first recorded from an English site.

Review by E. W. H. [E.W. Holden] in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1970:
This new guidebook to Pevensey Castle, written by the author of Norman Castles in Britain (John Baker, 1969), is an up-to-date account of the castle from Roman times until the last war, profusely illustrated with excellent plans, photographs and pictures, three being in colour. The topography, history, the mediaeval castle and the Roman fort are described in non-technical language, while illustrations from the Bayeux Tapestry enliven the text.

Abstract:
Rescue excavations undertaken during 1994 by the Field Archaeology Unit of the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, on land adjacent to the Old Farmhouse, High Street, Pevensey, revealed a dense concentration of archaeological features. The excavations and post-excavation work were funded by English Heritage.
Although some residual Romano-British material was found, no evidence of actual occupation of this period was discovered. The onset of habitation on the site appears to have been during the 12th century. The badly damaged remains of one possible building dating to this period were identified. It appears to have gone out of use by the end of the 13th century. Numerous features, predominantly pits, dating from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries were also located, although no definite structural remains could be associated with them. Evidence for activity dating from the 16th to 18th centuries was limited. 19th-century activity had, however, been extensive, causing serious damage to the earlier remains in the street frontage area.

Building 'Anderita' Late Roman Coastal Defences and the Construction of the Saxon Shore Fort at Pevensey, by A. F. Pearson, published February 1999 in Oxford Journal of Archaeology (vol. 18, issue 1, article, pp.95-117)   View Online
Abstract:
The construction of the Roman coastal installation at Pevensey (East Sussex) in the late third century represented a building project of considerable importance, size and complexity. A study of the surviving material has identified the lithologies employed in the fort's construction, the approximate quantities in which they were present and the likely areas from which they were quarried. Local sources were exploited wherever possible, although an insufficient supply of brick seems to have forced the builders to look further afield for a substitute material for use in the bonding courses. The location of the quarries suggests that the majority of raw materials were moved by boat, and that the transport fleet required was remarkably small. Estimates of the length of construction for the later series of Shore Forts range from less than three years to over four decades. The labour and transport requirements have been calculated for Pevensey, allowing a discussion of the feasibility of each of these proposed time scales. It is argued that all were achievable, although in the briefer scenarios the army would have been unable to provide sufficient manpower, necessitating a draft of civilian labourers.

Abstract:
Excavations in 1993-95, undertaken by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Reading, discovered a sequence of rebuilding the east wall of the keep during the later Middle Ages. Alongside the excavations, the department also carried out fabric surveys of the Roman walls, the keep and the medieval walls of the inner bailey. Certain results of the keep survey and excavation were included in the 1999 English Heritage guidebook, notably reaffirmation of the homogeneous character of the keep inside the Roman wall (Allen & Al Shaikhley 1994). However, only a preliminary report on the gatehouse was produced from the survey of the medieval walls and this paper provides a revised summary of that work, with some observations on the subsequent structural development of the castle through the thirteenth century. There are documentary and architectural contexts for the construction of the lower storeys of the gatehouse during the reign of Richard I.

Abstract:
A programme of excavations on and around the keep of Pevensey Castle established that the fort wall of the late Roman "Saxon Shore" fort was constructed AD 280-300, very possibly during the usurpation of Allectus. A deep sequence of "dark earth" built up against the inside of the Roman fort wall during the Roman and early medieval periods, before and after the establishment of William I's castle after 1066. A substantial stone keep and probably the gatehouse and inner bailey were constructed around 1200 and traces of a tower on the outside of the Roman fort wall were recorded. Substantial later repairs to the inside included the addition of a tower against the outer face of the (collapsing) Roman wall, the construction of a garderobe chamber and the re-building of the north-east tower, probably in the early 14th century. The base of the now ruinous keep was filled with clay after the 16th-17th centuries, probably to provide a foundation for cannon to defend the castle against possible Armada invasion in 1588.

Abstract:
The 2011 publication of the report on the excavations in the 1990s at Pevensey Castle marks over a century of archaeological, architectural and documentary research. For the first time, the investigation around the keep and elsewhere on the site was carried out to modern standards of excavation, which produced evidence for a revised construction date of both the Roman fort and the medieval walls. In particular, the date of the keep is now placed around 1200. This article reappraises the archaeological interpretation of the trenches within the keep, and correlates it with the earlier investigation of the site by Harold Sands in 1910. The historical sources are also re-examined, to question the date and context of the keep reached in the recent report. As a result, an alternative, earlier, date for the great tower in the reign of Henry I is proposed, set against recent research on Romanesque great towers in England.

Abstract:
Excavation at Pevensey and Westham CE School, Westham revealed evidence for medieval activity, mainly of 11th-13th century date. Two phases of ditch systems were identified, probably related to drainage activity associated with a marshland-edge location. A handful of pits and a possible structure were also recorded, although associated finds were very limited. A small collection of residual Roman pottery was recovered, but no features of this date were identified.
