Abstract:The presence of a Saxon settlement at Selsey (other than that of St. Wilfrid, which is generally supposed to have been in the eastern half of the Peninsula) has recently been revealed by coastal erosion west of the remains of Medmerry Farm, (O.S. 6 in. LXXXI, N.W.). The site is on low ground, only a few feet above the marshy land which lies behind, and the Saltings on the east.

Abstract:At the end of a recent die-study of the gold coins of Cunobelin, it was suggested that there might be something to learn from a comparable die-study of the gold coinage of Cunobelin's contemporary, Verica. The index of pre-Roman coins kept by the Institute of Archaeology in Oxford now makes such a task feasible without excessive labour. Thanks are again due to Mr Robert Wilkins of the Institute, for arranging and executing the tedious photography involved.

Abstract:We do not know who invented and first made early perpetual traps. In fact it was not until the nineteenth century that there emerged the first identifiable inventor and maker of a commercially successful perpetual mousetrap. His name was Colin Pullinger. Colin was a native of Selsey and remains the most famous son of this isolated village on the most southerly point of the coast of West Sussex.

Abstract:Preliminary reports indicate that tornadic winds and golfball-size hail damaged around 1000 properties at Selsey in West Sussex before midnight on Wednesday 7 January at a cost variously estimated at £5M to £10M. The storm went on to Peacehaven, near Newhaven, which it reached about a quarter of an hour after midnight damaging several houses there. This brief survey, prepared within a week of a site investigation at Selsey on 8 January, includes interviews with eye-witnesses.

Climate change, the frequency of UK tornadoes and other issues raised in the media reporting of the Selsey tornado, 7 January 1998, by Derek M. Elsom, David J. Reynolds and Michael W. Rowe, published January 1999 in The Journal of Meteorology (vol. 24, no. 235, article, pp.3-13) Download PDF
Abstract:The T3-4 intensity tornado which struck Selsey, West Sussex, on 7 January 1998 received unusually widespread and headline national media coverage. This article considers the narure of the media reporting of that event, especially in terms of its content and accuracy. The media made much of the possibility that climate change, specifically global warming, is resulting in more tornadoes occuring in the UK. UK TORRO's database of tornadic activity for the period 1960 to 1997 indicates there is no significant trend within this period although the late 1980s and to some extent the 1990s produced fewer annual numbers of tornadoes and tornado days than many of the years in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Abstract:The Selsey tornado of January 1998 was much reported in the media. There were also conflicting accounts of the amount of damage and financial loss. I was able to visit Selsey on a number of occasions to undertake site investigations, and was fortunate to meet Professor Michael Baker to compare our findings. This paper is a comprhensive damage study put togather on the evidence of several complementary sources.

Two Early First Millennium BC Wells at Selsey, West Sussex and their Wider Significance, by Mike Seager Thomas, published September 2001 in The Antiquaries Journal (vol. 81, article, pp.15-50) View Online
Abstract:Two early first millennium BC assemblages from Selsey Bill are considered, one of Late Bronze Age date and one of Early Iron Age date. Detailed examination of two large features suggests both a common function for the features and a functional similarity between the sites to which they belong. Data from them are tested against a contemporary, regional database. In terms of site activity and settlement form, both belonged to the same cultural tradition. But differences in inter-regional relationships, outlook and resource strategies are identified. The change, paralleled on contemporary Sussex sites, is attributed to population growth and a filling-out of the landscape.

Abstract:Excavation in advance of a housing development revealed traces of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement and landscape features, exhibiting continuity of layout across the two phases. Boundary ditches defined land divisions, all apparently part of a single system extending at least 350 m along a terrace edge. Clustering close to these boundaries, isolated pits characterized the two northern areas of the site, while the southern area was occupied by structures and a dense concentration of pits of both periods. The only evidence of ritual activity was a tiny secondary deposit of cremation pyre debris in a ditch fill. The chronology is not particularly clear, but it is possible that both phases fall into the transition from Bronze Age to Iron Age, in the 8th century BC.

Abstract:A piece of stone dredged off Selsey in 1909 was described by local historian Edward Heron-Allen as a foot of a Caen Stone statue of Saxon date from the ruins of the submerged Selsey Cathedral. A second foot, also slightly larger than life-size but cruder in style, was found on the Selsey foreshore in 1939, and cast some doubt on Heron-Allen's identification. A new assessment has shown that both finds are Bognor Rock and almost certainly flukes of nature. If future discoveries prove that they are indeed weathered pieces of statue, then a late medieval date would be more appropriate.

Abstract:The Mixon Reef off Selsey Bill has attracted a number of theories about its historic use. Observations of scuba divers have encouraged ideas of the reef being the site of a Roman fort, whilst medieval maps suggest an 'ancient city' on the reef. These suggestions have become accepted as fact, although never critically examined. The reef is known to have been quarried for building stone, although the circumstances surrounding its cessation have never been adequately investigated. Documents preserved in The National Archives have verified the historic accounts of the Mixon Reef as a quarry, and the prohibition of quarrying by the Admiralty in 1827. This information, together with geological and archaeological knowledge of the region, allows a new understanding of the Mixon Reef and the exploitation of its stone.
