Review by H. J. [H. Johnstone] in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1956:
The first in the official series to be known as "Chichester Papers" suggest a future bright with promise. The general editor, Mr. Steer, County Archivist for both East and West Sussex, knows intimately the material available for historians, antiquarians and others, the extent to which it has been utilised, and the most recent results obtained. He begins the first Paper with the remark "Chichester is a city of surprises." It is, indeed, in many senses. When Paper 1 was on its way through the press, for example, definitive evidence as to the exact date of Bishop Story's death suddenly emerged - just in time to be printed as a postscript. The monographs are uniform in size, printed in good type on good paper, and easy of reference because the stout paper cover is in each case of a different colour. There is plenty still to discover, and every hope of conditions favourable to such further additions to knowledge.

Abstract:
The poems of Henry King, friend of John Donne and executor of his will, were edited in 1965, but his sermons, fine examples of 17th century prose, which span the period from the reign of James I to that of Charles II, have never been reprinted. The Sermons of Henry King makes their text available in the original spelling (with some editing of Greek and Latin). Only 21 survive, 11 of which were published in 1628 as "An Exposition upon the Lords Prayer". King used language lucidly, persuasively, and without the straining of conceits found in many sermon writers of the period. At his best, he has few equals for grace of structure, sweetness of sound, elegiac intensity of mood, and occasional dry wit. His prose is also of importance for a fuller understanding of his poetry, presenting new evidence for the dating and canon of his poems, his methods of composition, and his reading. The sermons offer fresh insights into the reign of Charles I, the Civil War, Interregnum, and Restoration in King's firsthand accounts and assessments of events and characters. His theological importance is beginning to be acknowledged in the current exploration of the "middle" position between Arminian and Puritan in the 17th century Church of England: not a notable original thinker, he can be seen to be a thoroughly representative moderate Calvinist, forced nearer as a Royalist to the Arminian position by the political events of the late 1630s.

Abstract:
St. Richard is one of the most attractive English saints-and it is surprising that the early sources that tell his story have been inaccessible for so long. In this volume David Jones brings them together: the first English translation of the Life written by Richard's friend and disciple, Ralph Bocking; the original Latin text (which has not appeared in print since 1675); the first publication of Cardinal Odo of Chateauroux's sermon, which is based on the lost canonisation archive; the first translation of the Statutes by which Richard governed his diocese; and his will. In addition, a picture of Richard's official acts and journeys has been compiled-from a bewildering range of obscure sources - providing a valuable conspectus of the life and activity of a mediaeval English bishop. The introduction weaves all these threads together to provide the rounded portrait.
A fascinating and attractive personality emerges. We see a major religious leader, who was fully prepared to clash head on with his King, and who set out to reform the moral and spiritual life of his diocese. We see a charismatic figure, a man of great personal holiness, whose personal affection for his followers also demanded the highest moral standards from them. We see a masterly administrator, who undertook major work on Chichester Cathedral-and who knew exactly how to extract the funds to do it.
This volume will be indispensable for anyone with an interest in, or affection for, St. Richard-and essential for students of English mediaeval and religious history and history of the county of Sussex.

Abstract:
The main narrative for St. Richard's career and miracles is the Life written by Ralph Bocking in about 1270. A Dominican friar, Bocking knew Richard during his lifetime and acted as his confessor. Richard may also have told him his life story. Bocking could therefore draw upon his own memories and several of his anecdotes are couched in the first person. He also had access to the minutes of the canonization enquiry. The publication of this Story of Saint Richard marks the 750th anniversary of his death.

Abstract:
It was to George Bell, an English bishop, that Dietrich Bonhoeffer sent his last words before he was executed at the Flossenbürg concentration camp in April 1945. Why he did so becomes clear from Andrew Chandler's new biography of George Kennedy Allen Bell (1883-1958).
As he traces the arc of Bell's life, Chandler shows how his story reshapes our perspective on Bonhoeffer's life and times. In addition to serving as Bishop of Chichester, Bell was an internationalist and ecumenical leader, one of the great Christian humanists of the twentieth century, a tenacious critic of the obliteration bombing of enemy cities during World War II, and a key ally of those who struggled for years to resist Hitler in Germany itself. This inspiring biography raises important questions that still haunt the moral imagination today: When should the word of protest be spoken? When should nations go to war, and how should they fight? What are our obligations to the victims of dictators and international conflict?
