Abstract:Established in 1915 by the merger of three existing companies, Southdown grew to become one of the greatest names in road passenger transport. Expanding through the acquisition of smaller operators and by the development of new routes, the company became part of the BAT-Tilling group in 1928 and in 1942 a subsidiary of British Electric Traction. As part of BET it was to become a major constituent of the National Bus Company in the late 1960s. For enthusiasts, part of the fascination of Southdown was for its variety of buses and coaches, including the famous 'Queen Mary' double-deckers built between 1958 and 1967. These Leyland PD3s were fitted with highly distinctive full-fronted bodywork, making them instantly recognisable as they plied their trade along the south coast

Abstract:In 160 pages and with over 250 photographs and illustrations, Roger French OBE tells the story of the last twenty-five years of one of the UK's most successful and admired bus companies, Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. The book explains how the company was recreated out of Southdown in 1985 and the inside story behind its privatisation as a management buy-out two years later, as well as its sale to the Go-Ahead Group in 1993. As a serving managing director who has overseen the company throughout its contemporary history for the last quarter of a century, Roger French is best placed to reveal the secrets of how Brighton & Hove has been able to achieve the holy grail of consistent passenger growth every year since 1993. The book contains a full route history over the last twenty-five years, as well as details of the intake of buses and coaches into the fleet each year. Details of the acquisition of Brighton Buses in 1997 and Stagecoach's Lewes operations in 2005 are also included.

Abstract:The many events held and publications produced to celebrate the centenary of Southdown Motor Services in 2015 all went to emphasise the high esteem in which the Company was, and still is held, not only by enthusiasts but by those to whom the apple green and cream buses were an integral part of everyday life. It is remembered particularly for the exceptional quality and comfort of its vehicles, its superb maintenance standards, its superior service and its pride in the presentation of vehicles and staff alike. This book attempts to illustrate, in words and pictures, the various elements which went to create the Southdown style and to explain why, almost fifty years after the 'true' Southdown was swallowed up by the National Bus Company, it is still held in such high regard by enthusiasts, former employees and the general public alike. In the words of Brighton's own Max Miller, 'there will never be another'.

Abstract:By the start of the 1930s Southdown Motor Services had been in existence for less than 15 years but it had already secured a bus operating territory stretching along the coast from Hastings to Fareham and inland to Petersfield, Horsham, Handcross, Uckfield and Heathfield. Southdown's bus route network was already well established with main trunk routes linking most of the major towns and villages throughout their territory and by summer 1930 many of the services that would survive into the 1960s were already in place. In this book, which follows on from Colin Druce's acclaimed work on Southdown at War, the author uses his extensive research to cover a fascinating period in Southdown's history, looking at both services and vehicles.
