Review by George D. Johnston in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1949.:This is an interesting book; the Authors trace first the evolution of Cricket from Man's primaeval instincts to throw a missile and to ward it off, and then the early history of cricket in Sussex and the particular history of cricket in Henfield since the first recorded match in 1764. There are many complete score-sheets and a full list of all matches ever played and useful lists of the Clubs played against and of the Henfield Players. The result is an admirable book obviously compiled after much labour and search and the Archaeologist will be especially interested in the wall-painting (reproduced) in Cocking Church depicting Shepherds holding the ancestor of the cricket bat.

Review by A. A. in Sussex Notes and Queries, May 1952:A complete record of references, however fragmentary, to cricket in Sussex prior to Queen Victoria's accession, the earliest being in 1622, when five men were "presented" or reported to the Bishop for "playing at cricket in the church-yard on Sunday". This may be a surprise to those who fancied that Sussex cricket began with Fry and Ranji. As the authors explain, this booklet is intended for reference rather than general reading. Perhaps they will now devote their energies to the major task , which clearly awaits them - the complete History of Sussex Cricket.

Abstract:The history of cricket in Sussex has been traced back to the 17th century, but the 18th century was a period of enormous importance in the development of the game. It was the period when a disorganised rural pastime, played in country churchyards and rural wastelands evolved into a national game played by regular teams patronised by the aristocracy and county gentry. Sussex was one of the principal centres of this evolution. The history of cricket in particular and sport in general is every bit as valuable as economic, religious or social history, and this volume is the first comprehensive study of all available sources.
It prints in chronological order all known references to 18th century cricket in Sussex or played by Sussex teams, recorded in local and national newspapers, diaries, correspondence and accounts of the period. The principal newspapers used are the Sussex Weekly Advertiser and the Hampshire Chronicle and Portsmouth Gazette for matches played in the western half of the county, and the Kentish Chronicle, Kentish Gazette, Kentish Weekly Post and the Canterbury and Maidstone Journals for the east. London newspapers are useful sources for matches played in London, particularly in the first half of the century.
Books of scores compiled by W. Epps, Samuel Britcher, Henry Bentley and Arthur Haygarth are included. References to cricket have been extracted from the Sussex diaries of John Baker, John Burgess, William Davy, Walter Gale, Sarah Hurst, James Maidlow, Thomas Marchant, John Marsh and Thomas Turner, together with those of John Dawson and Thomas Pattenden of Kent. Manuscript sources have been transcribed from West Sussex Record Office. the Hampshire Record Office, the Kent Heritage Centre and the British Library, as well as a host of other collections.
The Introduction reproduces all known references to cricket in Sussex in the 17th century. It examines the chronological and geographical spread of the game in 18th century Sussex. It also explores such aspects of the game as the grounds on which matches were played, and the teams who played. The place of cricket in the society of the time is discussed: the patrons and sponsors, the crowds, the entertainment and hospitality, and the gambling. Other topics touched on include series of matches, rules and regulations, scores, the weather, curiosities of cricket and women's cricket.

Abstract:The history of Sussex, the oldest of the county cricket clubs, is nothing if not dramatic. In 2003, after an excruciating wait of 164 years, Sussex seized the Championship title for the first time. Since then, they have been the dominant force in the domestic game, winning the title twice more in 2006 and 2007, and the C&G Trophy in 2006.That first Championship five years ago was the subject of the critically acclaimed "The Longest Journey". Now authors Paul Weaver and Bruce Talbot return to explain why this has been the richest period in the club's already vivid history.Going behind the scenes, Weaver and Talbot talk to players and coaches, old and new, to explore the big questions surrounding the club. Why, they ask, did a club with some of the most exciting players in the game find the big prize so elusive for so long? And how, after a revolution in 1997, did the club embark on one of the headiest voyages in the history of county cricket?

Abstract:Henry North Holroyd, the 3rd Lord Sheffield was born in 1832. After Eton he spent time in the Diplomatic Service and the Army. He became an MP for East Sussex in 1857 and held the seat for eight years. Also in 1857 he began his first term as president of Sussex CCC and remained in office for eleven years. His greatest indulgence was at his home, Sheffield Park, where he built a cricket ground to match any in the country. In 1884 and on four later occasions, the Australian Tourists began their tours with a fixture against Lord Sheffield's XI, captained always by the legendary W G Grace. In 1891/2 Lord Sheffield took the England team to Australia to play a Test series. Other grand matches in the Park included fixtures against South Africa and a team of Parsees from Bombay. Lord Sheffield was famous for his hospitality and no expense was spared in staging these wonderful cricket matches.

Abstract:The Duke of Richmond broke his leg in 1732. This apparently minor incident is significant because of the prominence of the duke, the distinction of the doctors who treated him, and the wealth of information on the treatment he received, revealed in the contemporary newspapers and the duke's surviving correspondence. Before the accident the duke was one of a number of occasional and enthusiastic gentleman cricket players. After the accident he became arguably the most important patron of cricket in the first half of the 18th century.

Bats, Baronets and Battle: A Social History of Cricket and Cricketers from an East Sussex Town, by Tim Dudgeon, published 25 March 2013 (236 pp., Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse UK, ISBN-10: 1481784285 & ISBN-13: 9781481784283) accessible at: British Library & East Sussex Libraries
Abstract:Bats, baronets and Battle is more than just about cricket. This is a history full of colourful characters - eccentric baronets with a fondness for gambling, forthright women who wished to take their role and the game beyond an excuse to wear a pretty dress, and brothers from local villages who played the sport at the highest levels home and abroad. If Sussex was the 'cradle' for the earliest of cricket, the villages around Battle were there at the game's birth. From Georgian times and the murky world of 18th century politics, Tim Dudgeon traces Battle cricket's role from its role in 18th century Georgian gambling though the fear of 19th century rural unrest and the dawn of the professional game to the tragic impact of two world wars and into the modern era. The story he uncovers is an intriguing one that has local people and communities at its heart, but throws light on their links with events and forces that have shaped our world today.
