Memorial cards were originally a product of the Victorian celebration of death. They were usually supplied by the undertaker on behalf of the bereaved. Some were sent to relatives and friends in black edged envelopes as notification of the death, as invitations to the funeral, or simply in remembrance of the deceased. The peak of memorial card 'popularity' was probably in the 1870s and 1880s.
The cards were printed in black or silver on white or beige cards. Some took the form of a single black-edged card measuring about 11.5cm by 7.5cm with a blank space left in the centre for the appropriate details to be entered by the printer. These usually included the name and age of the deceased, date of death, and date and place of burial. Sometimes other useful information was included, such as date of birth, name of spouse or parents, address of the deceased, cause of death and grave number in a municipal cemetery. Other memorial cards were double, with the details of the deceased printed inside on the right and a religious text or verse on the left.
The National Memorial Card Index was begun in 1990 and now contains over 6,000 cards, covering the period from 1842 to 1994, and most English plus some Welsh counties.

Hoops & Signals: The Story of a Sussex Great Grandfather, by John Ireland, published 11 January 2013 (70 pp., Country Books, ISBN-10: 1906789797 & ISBN-13: 9781906789794) accessible at: West Sussex Libraries & East Sussex Libraries

Thomas Ireland lived in the village of Balcombe all his life. From the age of 11 he was a barrel hoop maker before joining the LBSCR in 1852 as a tunnelman, subsequently being made a signalman. Largely self-taught he kept journals or diaries from the 1860s to the 1890s and it is these that provide the source of much of the information for this book. Subject matters cover his two jobs, current affairs, recipes, gardening, remedies and strong views on religion (anti-popery). Also included are photos and local postcards together with a family tree to 1747 and notes on the origins of the surname. A worthwhile contributions to the county's rich historical heritage.

When I mention the Sussex People Index I am often asked: "What is the Sussex People Index?" This is actually a tricky question to answer and I usually start by saying what it does not contain, namely: baptisms, burials, census, and pre 1837 marriages, these being catered for elsewhere.
The Sussex People Index started as references to names occurring in Sussex found by Frank Leeson and his team of Marriage Indexers. When the Sussex Marriage Index was published I offered to take over the remaining slips and many volunteers made database entries for me. It now has approximately 137,400 entries referring to about 242,000 people for at least 12,450 surnames and 7,700 locations (property names, hamlets).
The sources vary considerably; there are names from various Sussex Record Society volumes, East Sussex Parish Apprenticeships 1575-1844, Bankrupts 1731-1789 from the Gentleman's Magazine, names from Michael Burchall's Sussex Genealogist and Local Historian, from various books, from newspapers, information from BMD certificates as sent in by various people, some pedlars' certificates/licences for East Sussex. A major source is Wills, as provided by Rosie Ansell (willstore@sfhg.org.uk); the names in SPI are not just of the testators but legatees, witnesses, tenants and anyone else mentioned.

It is now approaching ten years since Joan Goddard asked me if I would be interested in setting up a Wills Depository for Sussex as she had been sent a number of will transcriptions and did not know what to do with them. My first appeal for members to send me transcriptions of wills of their Sussex Ancestors appeared in the Historian in March 2005 and met with an immediate response. The first CD of nearly 300 wills was sent to the SFHG library that June.
You may have noticed that there has been a recent update to the wills listed on the website as another 470 wills have been added in the 9 months to the end of May. We now have nearly 4,500 wills, over 400 Admons and over 400 abstracts listed and we have recently started collecting inventories. Copies of transcripts received are put in the library and all names from wills (testators, beneficiaries, executors and witnesses) are added to the Sussex People Index and so can be found in the SFHG Data Archive on the website. If you are interested in a particular parish wills are sorted by place on the website as well.

In 2013 not only did the Sussex Family History Group celebrate its fortieth anniversary but also, with the December edition of the Sussex Family Historian, our journal completed 40 years of publication: 20 volumes and 160 editions. Quite an achievement, I think. This seemed an ideal opportunity to update our searchable compilation of the Journal and create the 3rd Edition. SFHG member Dave Lee recently took on the task of scanning and indexing the pages of the journal and later, after a bit of arm twisting, also agreed to take on the task of programming. Dave realised the search results included duplicate entries when the same name appeared several times on a page. These multiple entries have been removed to help make the search results more meaningful (a substantial task).There are now over 65,000 names in the index, 5,560 articles on 7300 pages. 'Eagle eyed' readers may notice a reduction in the number of names from our previous version, however this is due to the removal of duplicates as now the names from another 24 issues have been included. Also added is the option to show or hide the names of associated places when a name search is undertaken.

This has been a busy summer for Pete Steward and the small team at Parish Register Transcription Society. They have now finished their indexed transcriptions of all parish registers of all West Sussex pre-1837 parishes up to the beginning of the twentieth century and in some cases beyond. West Chiltington (No.186) was followed by Southwick (187), Fernhurst (188), Lindfield (189) and Littlehampton (190). Lyminster (191) was next to which was added the neighbouring parish of Warningcamp, followed by Slaugham (192). Kingston Gorse has been added to East Preston (61). The latest to arrive are Bury (Vol.193 after acquiring copyright permission vested in West Sussex Record Office), Washington (194) and Thakeham (195) to complete West Sussex.

One of the important contributions that family history societies are making in the world of genealogical research is the systematic transcription and indexing of early vital records. Exploring original records is fun and rewarding if you have a good idea of where your ancestors came from but sooner or later every family historian needs to find out about an ancestor for whom they have little clue where to look. Indexes, such as the SFHG Marriage, Burial or Baptism Indexes or the more recent Sussex People and Will Indexes, can help to point the researcher in the right direction.
The Sussex Baptism Index was started by my predecessor, the late John Lee, in 1998 and has now grown to have over 1.6M entries. The aim is to capture all the surviving baptismal and other birth related records for the whole of Sussex from 1537 to 1900. It is the work of over 150 volunteers, both members of the group and of the Parish Register Transcription Society, who over the years have inputted data from existing transcripts and transcribed from original documents.

Submitting Your Family History To The SFHG
I thought that I had better introduce myself to you all. Following Mick's request in the last issue of SFH I volunteered to take on the role of the SFHG family tree co-ordinator. Although I started my working life as a research and development engineer I spent the last fifteen to twenty years of my working life in IT, part of my responsibility being IT security. I have been researching my own and my wife's family history for about 20 years and built up a considerable amount of information about my ancestors and their siblings and it goes back into the seventeenth century. The future of my research does worry me, possibly my son, who is interested in history, is likely to want to keep the information I have which includes a lot of family photographs. This has made me think about the long term future of many people's research which is why I took on this role.

If DNA testing works for a Plantagenet king, then it could work for you too. Although it was mitochondrial DNA that finally proved decisive in Richard III's case, while for me, it is my father's Y-DNA test results that have prompted me to write this article.
The DEWDNEY (and its main variant, DUDNEY) surname is an extremely unusual one. The last estimate I found stated there were fewer than 500 on the UK electoral roll, and there are more in the UK than elsewhere.
