Edward I, by L. F. Salzman, F.S.A., published 1968 (Constable)
Review by M. C. in Sussex Notes and Queries, November 1968:
It comes as something of a shock to read "Edward I" and be forcibly reminded how much historical writing has changed over the last couple of decades, and how relatively unfamiliar Dr. Salzman's approach now is. Nevertheless, in these days of trends, problems, and statistical analysis, straightforward chronological narrative comes as a refreshing change, especially when the style is as lucid and readable as this. Recent writing has tended to concentrate on particular aspects of Edward's reign; one is thus inclined to lose sight of the complexities, of the fact that the king was dealing with so many problems simultaneously, and this book provides an admirable corrective. Dr. Salzman also succeeds in showing us Edward as a man of his age, a truly medieval king, dubbing knights, holding tournaments as well as Parliaments, an assiduous visitor of pilgrimage shrines who rode into battle behind the standard of St. Cuthbert or St. Neot, whose mind still worked within the conventions of a feudal and chivalric code which his actions were to do so much to destroy. It was a violent age, and Dr. Salzman is right to remind us that expulsion of the Jews was "the most universally popular act of Edward's reign," and that the barbarous punishment meted out to Wallace was one which "contemporary law and public opinion would have regarded as justifiable."
Some of the best things in this book are the vivid scenes, such as the preparations for Edward's coronation, where the detail, carefully chosen and aptly handled, brings the whole event to life. Dr. Salzman has a profound knowledge of contemporary sources which he uses to great effect in shaping his narrative, but many may regret that he did not see fit to give more space to a critical discussion of at least some of the evidence. The views of so wise a scholar on, for example, the relative merits of the chronicles he lists, would be of enormous interest and value to students of the period.

Abstract:
Compatriots of king's foreign wives often benefited from the queen's access to patronage and expatriate communities developed, but it is rare to be able to trace these networks in the central Middle Ages. An early example is the group that gathered around the second wife of King Henry I (1100-35), Adeliza of Louvain, who settled in Sussex after the king's death. Clerics from Adeliza's household became successful in the English church and the women who accompanied her married into the Anglo-Norman nobility. Adeliza was herself the ancestress of the earls of Arundel through her second marriage to William d'Aubigny, while her half-brother, Joscelin, was the founder of the Percy family.

Charles II's escape after the Battle of Worcester in 1651 is an extraordinary tale of adventure and suspense. This new edition of Ollard's classic book vividly reconstructs the six weeks during which the King was on the run. His great determination and good humour through it all won the admiration of many who risked their lives to aid him. Tremendously readable, fast-paced and a fascinating view of life in seventeenth-century England.

Abstract:
A full transcript of all the Sussex (and Cinque Ports) men who signed an Oath of Allegiance to King William III in 1696 following an attempted assassination. Men (over age 20) including clergy are listed in the place they signed, and only 5% signed by mark. Michael Burchall has transcribed all these signatures from the originals at the National Archives and he writes a full historical introduction and gives a potted biography of major office bearers. Sussex is one of the first counties where names have been abstracted. These Oath Rolls of 1696 fill the gap between the Hearth Tax Lists of the 1660s and the Land Tax Lists of 1785 (extracted by the Sussex Record Society).
