This is another handsome volume on Sussex, published by the Medici Society for the Viscountess Wolseley, which contains some excellent illustrations in colour, those of Oldland Mill, Ditchling and the view from Chanctonbury being especially delightful.
In every page Lady Wolseley shows her love for Sussex and the history of its old houses. All those who read her book will want to know more and to see more of what she describes with so much ease. Information of the right sort is not easily come by and Lady Wolseley is careful to acknowledge her debt to those from whom she has gathered so much. One sometimes fears that the County may suffer from too much popularity and in these cosmopolitan days one can but hope that the sturdy independence of the Sussex people, which Lady Wolseley so much appreciates, will survive the inroads made upon it by modern influences. At any rate, this is a very charming record by word and illustration, of many beauties hidden as yet from the ordinary passer-by.

Dr. Cecil Curwen has contributed so much to our knowledge of prehistoric Sussex, that we welcome his new volume in the series of County Archaeologies, which is devoted chiefly to pre-Roman remains. It is based largely on researches in which he himself has taken part, or on earlier work which his independent personal observations have enabled him to appraise. He leaves little space for the relics of the Roman occupation, and for a few antiquities of doubtful age which he relegates to a chapter headed "Limbo". He does well to omit all reference to the Saxon period, which would have curtailed too much his valuable account of the earlier phases of life in the county.
Dr. Curwen's book is admirably written to interest the general reader, and has many features - such as the quotations in chapter headings - which will captivate. He illustrates and explains the discoveries in Sussex by frequent references to corresponding finds elsewhere, and to customs which are not familiar. He also provides ample drawings and photographs which are noteworthy for their excellence; and he adds a useful series of small maps of the county, showing the geographical distribution of the known remains of different periods. Nor is he unmindful of the specialist and the reader who will be led to go further, for he gives in footnotes numerous references to the papers and separate works in which the original descriptions and detailed information will be found.
After some important preliminary observations, Dr. Curwen proceeds to describe and discuss the Sussex evidence of the primeval hunters and food-gatherers of Palaeolithic times. He enlists the aid of Mr. Reid Moir, who furnishes the material for a table of correlation of the Pleistocene deposits of Sussex, and adds some interesting remarks on the discoveries at Piltdown. It appears that no undoubted late Palaeolithic implements have hitherto been found in Sussex, but Mesolithic flints are widely spread, sometimes in rock shelters. The late Mr. Lewis Abbott found many of these flints in a "kitchen-midden" below Hastings Castle, but Dr. Curwen points out that none of the pottery in this deposit can be earlier than the Iron Age, while some is mediaeval, so that the accumulation is of various dates.
The dawn of civilisation was reached in Neolithic times, which are represented in Sussex by camps, dwelling places, long barrows, and flint mines. Dr. Curwen remarks that too many of the hill forts have been described as Neolithic camps on insufficient evidence, and only four have hitherto been satisfactorily identified in Sussex. Twelve long barrows are known on the chalk downs, but there are no stone chambers or dolmens. If the barrows were originally chambered, wood may have been used as in a long barrow lately explored in Lincolnshire. There seems to be no longer any doubt as to the Neolithic date of the flint mines, the supposed palaeoliths being really neoliths in process of manufacture.
After a special discussion of the flint implements, Dr. Curwen concludes that the finest of them were probably made and used in the early part of the Bronze Age. This age seems to have lasted in Britain from about 2000 to 500 B.C., and is noteworthy for the beginning of agriculture which can be studied in settlements on the downs. Nearly a thousand round barrows or burial mounds of the period have been identified in Sussex, chiefly on the Downs, and they have yielded a valuable series of urns and implements of various kinds. Still more important are the hoards of bronze implements, of which tabulated lists are given.
With the Iron Age comes evidence of the first cities; and Cissbury, the Caburn, and other sites are well described. Dr. Curwen then adds a concise technical chapter on the development of pottery, by which the late Bronze Age and the successive phases of the Iron Age are distinguished. Next follows an equally concise account of Roman Sussex, which is well up to date like the rest of the book, and includes the results of Mr. I. D. Margary's studies on the Roman roads. Among the subjects in "Limbo" is the Long Man of Wilmington, which is said to be very ancient but of uncertain date.
Dr. Curwen has spared no pains in verifying the facts and consulting the original sources, and he has used for the first time the valuable MS. diary of Dr. Gideon A. It is sad to note how many of the older finds have been lost, but gratifying to learn how carefully everything of importance is now preserved. Between the upper and the nether millstone of the London and Channel suburbs, Sussex is so well-known that many "picturesque" books have been devoted to it. Yet, owing to its former seclusion in its woods, clay and waterless chalk, there is always more to find and enjoy. Nor can it be intelligently enjoyed without a knowledge of its history and also of its pre-history. Mrs. Meynell has grasped this fact, and the result is a book which is not only picturesque but intelligent. Dedicated to our Society by the author, a keen member, it draws largely on the Society's contributions made over the past century to the knowledge of the county's history.
Mrs. Meynell, like her present reviewer, can say with the Apostle "Others with a great price have purchased this freedom, but I was born free," and her love for her petite patrie disarms criticism in one who shares it. But, with all her hard work on the sources, there is here too much picturesque writing, and also some innocence. Let me make a few points. Sussex flint-knapping is not "dead thousands of years "; the latest example I know (at Lancing College) dates from 1930 and there was much in the nineteenth century. The round flint church towers of the Lewes Valley, Norfolk and the French coastal chalk were so built to avoid quoins, stone being scarce. (By a slip, Southover is given as one of them). On pp. 22-3 the Adur should have been added to the rivers which have lost their old names; it is in fact the most modern and least genuine name of all. Reference to The Place Names of Sussex would have saved the wild guess that Adversane (in Billingshurst) is a name of Roman origin. Paradise (at Winchelsea) is merely the old word for park; Parkinson gave his book the rebus title Paradisi in sole Paradisus terrestris. The Tudor dislike of south aspects, here referred to but not explained, was an unintelligent Renaissance importation from Italy, where the hot African wind brings "the plagues of the South." Court Farm, at Ditchling, probably has no royal origin, but, as elsewhere, merely refers to the Courthouse of the Manor. "A gentleman calling himself Horace Smith, Esq." was and is too well known as part author of Rejected Addresses to be so described. Surely the Roman Catholic tradition at Arundel was not unbroken, as here stated. Finally (a misprint?) the Roman weapon was the pilum, not the pillum :
Thine, Roman, is the pilum,
Roman, the sword is thine.
But the book is so sensitive and (in the best sense of the word) amiable, that these faults are only mentioned from a stern sense of duty and in the hope of a revised edition. The illustrations are lovely, but one misses specimens of Georgian Sussex, and in the bad modern fashion they are given no margin; binding cannot fail to crop them.

In the seventeen years that have passed since the first edition of this book appeared, and even more in the twenty-five since the publication of the author's seminal work, Prehistoric Sussex, a long series of excavations has been carried out along the seaboard and Downlands of Sussex, largely by or for the Society and its affiliated bodies under archaeologists, whom to name would be invidious, inspired by the work of Dr. Curwen and his distinguished father. The book has been skilfully revised and brought up to date, without much disturbance of the text and illustrations of 1937. The footnotes, which abound in references to the Society's and other publications of the forties and fifties, form an easy guide to the revisions and additions. For example, we have accounts, inter alia, after Burstow's work on the Bronze Age site on Itford Hill and of Dr. A. E. Wilson's recent work at Chichester. While the book was in proof Dr. Curwen was able to record the startling recent exposure of the Piltdown forgery.
With the Iron Age, with which unfortunately the book had to conclude, we get out of prehistory into history, even before the Romans came. For example, we have the tin-copper coins from the Caburn. These barbaric copies of Gaulish coins, originating at Massilia, bear a head and a bull. Dr. Curwen suggests that the head represents Apollo; but may we not infer from the bull that it rather represents that other sun-god, dear to the Roman legions, Mithras? The present writer is no prehistorian - indeed so little of one that it is only now that his belief, acquired in school days at Lancing, that dewponds are prehistoric, was a delusion, and that they are not to be dated earlier than the eighteenth century. So it is with great hesitation that he offers the suggestion above.
To the Iron Age belongs the network of Roman roads from the coast and over the Weald, which Mr. Margary has done so much to map out. Dr. Curwen gives a clear, though necessarily brief, resume of Mr. Margary's conclusions.
The wartime activities of tanks, and the even more drastic post war effects of bulldozers, will make future archaeological work difficult, especially on the Downs, where prehistoric habitations were thickest. But they may provide fresh problems for the archaeologists of the thirtieth century.

The storm of 16th October 1987 was one of the most destructive gales on record in South-East England. However, the damage appears to have been neither as widespread nor a severe as in the gales of 1362, 1662 and 1703, although in Kent and Sussex it may have been comparble with the storm of 1703, which was in general the most severe of the four. Major factors in the development of the 1987 storm were an exceptional thermal gradient in the upper atmosphere over the Atlantic and the existence of a sharp upper trough to the west of Britain.

This companion volume to Sussex Coast Through Time is unique in being the first 'then and now' book to portray the numerous and diverse communities of East and West Sussex through rich sepia and stunning colour images. Most of the early pictures have never previously been published and include a number of rarities that can only now be widely enjoyed. Far from simply depicting street scenes, the focus occasionally shifts, with suitable background, to an event, a group of buildings or perhaps even simply a shop or house to illustrate local change - for better or worse - down the years. Sussex Through Time is an important addition to the literature on Sussex and forms a valuable and long-awaited comparative record of most of the settlements lying within this extensive county.

This latest collection of Douglas D'Enno's photographs is, as he writes, 'a companion to my Sussex Coast Through Time' that was reviewed in a recent edition of Sussex Past & Present. Like the earlier volume, most of the images are taken from postcards which are arranged in geographical order from Rye to South Harting.
The author's method is to take an image from earlier in the last century, and then try to reproduce it from the same vantage point: an endeavour which at times must have been rather perilous as roads which were once almost empty have been replaced with roads which are filled with traffic. He is careful to tell his readers the precise location of the images, e.g. 'The small market town of Heathfield lies almost equidistant . . . located near a junction . . . and the viewpoint looks south-eastward . . .'. He is also concerned to tell us of any rail-links and the 1904 map of Sussex shown at the end of the book shows how many of these links have been lost.
The images illustrating Worthing serve to illustrate Enno's approach. The one taken in the early twentieth century shows the former Town Hall: an imposing classical building which was demolished in 1968. It is surrounded by narrow streets and little shops each with an awning. There is no traffic except for pedestrians calmly walking around. The modern half of the pair taken from the same position is very different. The Town Hall is now the Guildbourne Centre - a shopping mall of undistinguished architecture - and none of the little shops exist any more. There are trees and hanging baskets, and whereas in the earlier picture all the ladies are wearing long skirts, in the newer image all but one person is wearing trousers. This pairing is perhaps extreme. It is remarkable in fact how little has changed in the smaller communities: the greatest change being the arrival of motor traffic and telegraph poles.
My main criticism of this book is that the author has tried to cover too much ground. It may be that there is a lack of early pictures, but rather than the skimming off the surface shown in this volume, it might have been better if the material had been divided into two books, one for each half of Sussex, with a greater selection of images being shown of each location. In his acknowledgements he apologises for the fact that lack of space prevented him from doing justice to the numerous books and websites he used as reference material. This was a pity and I hope that, if the book goes into a second edition, the lack can be remedied. Nonetheless, Sussex Through Time achieves its purpose and stands as a worthy companion to Sussex Coast Through Time.

This is the 17th volume in the series the Public Sculpture of Britain, part of the PMSA National Recording Project, which will eventually cover the whole of the country. The introduction considers the ways in which the rural and urban landscapes of Sussex, from market town, rural village and country estate, to city, major seaside resort and new town development, are reflected in the county s public sculptures. The historical period covered ranges from the allegedly pre-historic (the Long Man of Wilmington) to the present day (the most recent entry is Maggi Hambling s The Resurrection Spirit, 2013). There is a high proportion of nineteenth- century sculptures, including significant works by John Flaxman, Michael Rysbrack, Frances Chantrey and John Edward Carew; the statuemania that characterised the last part of this century is well illustrated by Thomas Brock s imposing statue celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee on Hove seafront. The achievements of major twentieth and twenty-first century sculptors are represented by Elisabeth Frink and William Pye among others. Many works from this period are the result of public art initiatives by local councils, often as part of more wide-ranging regeneration schemes for Sussex towns. The patronage of health authorities, influenced by new thinking about the calming and healing qualities of art in public places has also benefitted both local sculptors and those based elsewhere in the country. Each individual work is catalogued, with precise details of location, condition and history, including commissioning, opening ceremonies and re-siting. Most are individually illustrated in black and white. Biographies of local and less well-known sculptors, together with a selected bibliography are included at the end of the volume.
