Abstract:The brief re-vitalisation of the Wealden iron industry, brought about by the Seven Years' War (1756-63), caused an upsurge in the fortunes of established ironmasters, such as the Fullers and the Harrisons. It also brought to the fore a small number of entrepreneurs whose involvement in the Weald was much shorter. Among these can be numbered Edward Raby, John Churchill and James Bourne. Perhaps the briefest career was that of William Clutton.
