Abstract:This article contends that Robert Gurd's portfolio of published drawings of archaeological landscapes, sites and finds, made from the 1910s to his death in 1938, is a fine example for today's archaeological illustrator. The importance of line drawing in the recording of archaeological sites is re-stated and evaluated and Gurd's contribution to the Sussex record is assessed in that light.
