(110) FRAMFIELD, St. Thomas à Becket

Mostly built after the fire of 1509 - Nairn & Pevsner (506); the East end again rebuilt in 1842, necessitating the relocation of ledgers noted by Horsfield (Sussex I 364) from the North-East or Hempstead or Smith Chapel (see 110O) and the North side of the chancel (110D-F, J and K, etc.); a Harmer terracotta in churchyard to Ann Leadner, d. 1825.


110A Mural monument for Robert DURRANT, d. 1799

-  Nave, East wall, North of chancel arch, high above pulpit.

-  102(W); (H) inaccessible~Very good; local damage (cornice).

-  M.I. on white marble tablet; tall dark grey backplate in obelisk form; above, a decorative urn on cornice; at foot, 2 corbels; signed (lower right): 'PARSONS. Sculp. LEWES'.

-  Robert Durrant, Esq., d. 13 Dec 1799, aet 84; his nephews/heirs William, Thomas, John and Henry Woodward; his virtues.


110B Mural monument for Francis WARNETT, d. 1622

-  North-East or Hempstead Chapel (now an inaccessible vestry), on East wall, above furnishings.

-  74.5(W) x 138(H)~Condition unknown.

-  (Reportedly) in alabaster; scrolled top with escutcheon; tablet flanked by pilasters; scrolled decoration under.

-  M.I. reported as:

-  North-East or Hempstead Chapel (now an inaccessible vestry), on South wall.

110H Mural monument for Rev. John THOMPSON, d. 1830

-  Sanctuary South wall, above head height.

-  115(W) x 90(H)~Excellent.

-  M.I. (15 lines, engraved) on an unframed white tablet; 2 scrolled corbels; plain moulded cornice; shallow pointed pediment; signed (lower centre): 'PARSONS. LEWES'.

-  Rev. John Thompson, vicar of Framfield, d. 29 Aug 1830, aet 75; his widow, Mary Thompson, d. 6 Dec 1835, aet 78; his charitable acts.


110I Mural monument for the GAGE family, dated 1595

-  South-East chapel (Bentley / Gage), South wall, at head height.

-  99(W) x 95(H)~Fine; faded; local damage (cornice).

-  Engraved on a brass with a decorative alabaster surround: Edward and Margaret Gage kneel opposite to each other at a table. Behind Edward kneels one son; behind Margaret kneel five daughters. Above them, engraved in the stone surround is the inscription:
