(114) GLYNDE, St. Mary

The demolition of the old church commenced on 1 Aug 1763; the inscribed stones were removed for replacement; see account entry for recutting inscriptions, 'afresh upon the tombstones and setting them to rights', and another for 'Paving the aisle and before the altar with tombstones'; the mason's and bricklayers were managed by John Morris of Lewes; the present building was completed by 1 Jul 1765: '... the walls neatly floated, the Monumental Stones and Pavements Laid and the Marble Font ... etc.' (Register entry) at the expense of Richard Trevor of Glynde Place, Bishop of Durham - see Salzman (Glynde Registers 61), S. Berry (SAC 142 109ff) and plan in SNQ (XIII 248); the present building covers parts of the foundations of the mediaeval building; earlier ledgers were relocated to the new nave aisle and given uniform width measurements and the sanctuary floor became the memorial ground for the bishop's family, the Trevors of Glynde Place; the identity of the architect of the new church is disputed (ESRO MS Glynde 2770); it was perhaps Sir Thomas Robinson (no reference to Glynde in his biography by Giles Worsley in ODNB entry); the builders were Hodgson and Morris; original 18th century fittings are still in place and there are Harmer terracottas in churchyard (e.g. Marianne New, d. 1811); elaborate monuments were planned, or indeed built in the original church, see the request in his will made by Robert Morley, dated 10 Apr 1514, see Rice & Godfrey (42 210); see De St. Croix (SAC 20 47-90) for parish history; the estate passed from Morley to Trevor when Elizabeth, the widow of William Morley, married John Trevor son (2) of Sir John Trevor, Secretary of State to Charles II (see SNQ I 56-7); some of the original, longer M.I.s may have been recut in abbreviated form, see note on the inscription of Elizabeth Polhill (114L); Horsfield (Sussex I 345) comments on the M.I.s for the Trevors, Hampdens, Hays and Morleys.
