(126) HASTINGS, All Saints
On North-East fringe of the old town; walls mostly mediaeval, probably early 15th, century with renewals by Butterfield, 1870, see Nairn & Pevsner (519-20) and plan in SNQ (XII 102); fabric of church and chancel reported as (now) fine in 1686 and 1724, see Ford (46, 96); parish had 247 communicants in 1603, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns), and in 1724, c. 200 families (Ford); in 1786, there were few monuments, Gent's Mag in Gomme (261), though by 1801 the town population was 3,155 and by 1841 it was 12,000, so the All Saints set of early 19th century mural tablets reflects the growing fashion for Hastings c.1800 reflected in the high number of monuments of the 1820s.
