(128) HEATHFIELD, All Saints
Church isolated from the modern town, which lies to the North, beyond the Park; the mediaeval church had Decorated arches - Nairn & Pevsner (530-1); interior reportedly foul in 1724, but for the chancel belonging to John Fuller Esq., see Ford (108-9); church restored - 2 side galleries, 1823, see Horsfield (Sussex I 576) - and the ledger stones moved in 19th century; parish had 600 communicants in 1693, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns), c.199 families in 1724 and a population of 1226 in 1801; the first Baron Heathfield (George Augustus Eliott, 1717-90), owner of nearby Heathfield Park (from 1762), was buried here but commemorated later at Buckland Monachorum, Devon (see Additions); estate later sold to Newbery (see 128C; Farrant 248); the terracotta worker Jonathan Harmer was a resident of the parish; there are no Harmer monuments inside the church but one is attached to an external West wall, and there are others on headstones in the churchyard and at the nearby nonconformist chapel (Cade Street); Horsfield notes no monuments at Heathfield (Sussex I 576).
