(128) HEATHFIELD, All Saints

Church isolated from the modern town, which lies to the North, beyond the Park; the mediaeval church had Decorated arches - Nairn & Pevsner (530-1); interior reportedly foul in 1724, but for the chancel belonging to John Fuller Esq., see Ford (108-9); church restored - 2 side galleries, 1823, see Horsfield (Sussex I 576) - and the ledger stones moved in 19th century; parish had 600 communicants in 1693, see Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns), c.199 families in 1724 and a population of 1226 in 1801; the first Baron Heathfield (George Augustus Eliott, 1717-90), owner of nearby Heathfield Park (from 1762), was buried here but commemorated later at Buckland Monachorum, Devon (see Additions); estate later sold to Newbery (see 128C; Farrant 248); the terracotta worker Jonathan Harmer was a resident of the parish; there are no Harmer monuments inside the church but one is attached to an external West wall, and there are others on headstones in the churchyard and at the nearby nonconformist chapel (Cade Street); Horsfield notes no monuments at Heathfield (Sussex I 576).


128A Mural monument for Thomas and Mary COURTHOPE, erected 1745

-  Choir, North wall, high.

-  Width unknown; c.80 (H)~Very good; pigments lost.

-  M.I. (15 lines, engraved) on an unframed freestone tablet set portrait-wise, scrolled baseplate; above, a straight cornice supporting a double-curved pediment with an escutcheon.

-  Thomas Courthope, of Wadhurst; his wife Mary; their son George; also the patron, one James Courthope; all dates unknown.


128B Mural monument for Rev. John DRING, d. 1804

-  Sanctuary, North wall, above head height.

-  55(W) x 94(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. (11 lines, engraved, in Latin) on an unframed, grey, oval plaque resting on a marble corbel, black finial.

-  John Dring, A.M., vicar of Heathfield and chaplain to the bishop of Chichester, died at Orléans, France, 3 Sep 1804, aet 31; [The monument was placed by his mournful widow], F. Dring, daughter of Henry Goring, Baronet.


128C Mural monument for Francis NEWBERY, d. 1818, and others

-  Sanctuary, South wall, high.

-  c.67(W) x 100(H)~Very good.

-  M.I. (22 + 4 lines, engraved, black) on an unframed white rectangular marble tablet, set portrait- wise; black baseplate.

-  Francis Newbery, Esq., of Heathfield Park, d. 7 Aug 1818, aet 75; his wife, Mary, d. 31 Jan 1829, aet 81; issue - eldest daughter, Mary, d. 8 Jan 1804, aet 32, wife of Francis Freeling, Esq., Secretary to the General Post Office; second son, Robert d. 13 Aug 1805, aet 29; and youngest daughter, Charlotte d. 24 Aug 1805, aet 24; also, Anne Mary Newbery, d. 14 Dec 1830, aet 21, daughter of Major Gen. Newbery, and adopted daughter of Charles Newbery, Esq.


128D Ledger for Elizabeth WILKIN, d. 1704

128E Ledger for Rev. William WILKIN, d. 1699

-  M.I. (17 lines, engraved) in upper (W) 80% of a freestone slab; head to West.

-  Rev. William Wilkin, vicar of Heathfield for 44 years, d. 30 Aug 1699, aet 71; his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of William Plomer, Gent., of Cranbrook; their issue - Jane, Richard, Sarah, William and Elizabeth of whom William and Elizabeth are still living in 1742.


128F Ledger for Markwick HAFFENDEN, d. 1722/3

-  Nave floor, centre aisle, just West of 128E.

-  Mary Haffenden, d. ?? Nov. 1690, aet 22; daughter of Edward Goddin, of Wiston, Sussex; and wife of Marquick Haffenden, buried 7 Dec 1744, aet 92.
