(131) HERSTMONCEUX, All Saints

Now isolated from its village (c.f. Hooe); North arcade of c.1180-1200; South aisle is Early English; North chapel, in brick, c.1440; Victorian restorations - Nairn & Pevsner (533-4); broken paving reported in 1686; condition fine in 1724 (Ford 110); parish had c.240 communicants in 1603, Renshaw (Ecclesiastical Returns); monuments mostly manorial, associated with nearby Castle; terracottas by Harmer in churchyard but (unlike Wadhurst, etc.) not in the church; Horsfield notes only 131D.

131A Mural monument for Margaret BECKETT, d. 1750

- North aisle, North wall, at head height.

- 117(W) x 186(H)~Excellent.

- In mixed grey, cream and white marbles; M.I. (18 lines, engraved, black) on a panel framed by Doric half-columns, cornice and base mouldings; above, an entablature, frieze and broken, pointed pediment; half-urn in the centre; below, scrolled corbels to left and right and at 90 degrees to the wall.

- Margaret Beckett, d. 27 Dec 1750, aet 78; servant of George Naylor, Esq., of Herstmonceux, Esq., and a dependant of his daughter, Grace Naylor, who died 1727.

131B Mural monument for John LANCASTER, d. 1715, and his wives Mary, d. 1696, and Lucretia, d. 1732/3

- North aisle, North wall, East of 131A, at head height.

- 45(W) x 95(H)~Excellent.

- A grey marble panel, set portrait-wise; M.I. (13 lines - 6+3+4), engraved, black); simple cornice and base moulding in matching darker grey; below, as corbel, a flattened Ionic capital with space below for a square panel, intended for an escutcheon.

- John Lancaster, of Herstmonceux, d. 4 Aug 1715, aet 75; his first wife, Mary, d. 12 Apr 1696, aet 37; his last wife, Lucretia, d. 18 Feb 1732/3, aet 77.

131C A collection of fragments relating to an anonymous [churchyard?] monument

- North aisle, now located near the entrance to the North-East (Dacre) chapel.

- Max (H) of present ensemble 155~Weathering, some fine, some losses.

- Freestone ensemble includes a hexagonal base with fluted, attached colonettes at the corners and a mourning putto over a draped urn; on the floor 8 smaller fragments.

131D Wall tomb for the Lords DACRE, dated late 15^th century and early 16^th century

- Between the North-East (Dacre) chapel and the sanctuary.

- 330(W) x 340(H) (?taller on the South side)~Fabric worn but well consolidated; many details lost; colour recently restored.

- A substantial wall-tomb filling an arch between chapel and sanctuary; from each side, cusped arches over recumbent effigies of 2 armoured knights, lying with their feet to the East; base with quatrefoils; a decorated frieze over; in the North-East and South-East corners, niches with covers once contained statues (near here, on the North side graffiti: 'IC / WG TC/1722'); on the top frieze on South side, highly decorated achievements-of-arms; no M.I.s.

131E Mural monument for Georgiana NAYLOR, d. 1806

- Chancel, North wall, towards the North-West corner, above head height.

- 89(W) x 196(H)~Excellent; black fading but visible.

- Above, in an arched frame, a death-bed scene in bas-relief with an angel, mourners and the deceased; below, a cornice over an unframed panel with M.I. (engraved, black); below, a blank base panel and another, still lower, with a further M.I. (added after 1855).

- Georgiana Naylor, died at Lausanne, Switzerland on Easter Sunday, 1806; fourth daughter of Jonathan Shipley, bishop of St. Asaph; and wife of Francis Hare Naylor, of Herstmonceux; issue - eldest son, Francis George, d. Palermo, 1842; second son, Rev. August William, rector of Alton Barnes, Wiltshire; third son, Julius Charles, rector of Herstmonceux for 22 years and archdeacon of Lewes 14 years, d. 23 Jan 1855; fourth son, Marcus Theodore; youngest child, Anna Maria Clementina, died in infancy; Geogiana Naylor's eldest sister, Anna Maria, widow of Sir William Jones.

131F Mural monument for Francis Hare NAYLOR, d. 1815

- Chancel, North wall, over door to North aisle, above head height.

- 90(W) x 70(H)~Very good, fading.

- Composite black baseplate supporting a rectangular white marble panel; set landscape-wise; M.I. (12 lines, engraved, black); signed (below): 'PARSONS.LEWES'.

- Francis Hare Naylor, Esq., of Herstmonceux, died Tours, France, 17 Apr 1815, aet 61; his second wife, Anne Maria, died at Bradley House, Devon, 30 Aug 1849, aet 76; issue - 3 unnamed.

131G Mural monument for Rev. Luke TREVIGAR, d. 1772, and his wife Elizabeth, d. 1780

- Chancel, North wall, to West of 131D, high up.

- 115(W); (H) inaccessible~Excellent; local damage (right cornice).

- M.I. (18 lines, engraved, black) on unframed grey marble panel; cornice and base moulding, the latter supported by corbels left and right; curved baseplate and M.I. (2 lines), dropping to a central ball finial; above, a thin obelisk-shaped, black baseplate supporting an achievement-of-arms and above, a half-urn on a pedestal, these last in white marble.

- Rev. Luke Trevigar, M.A., rector of Herstmonceux and canon residentiary of Chichester; d. 18 Apr 1772, aet 67; his wife Elizabeth, d. 28 Apr 1780, aet 74; their virtues, no issue mentioned.

131H Ledger stone for Jane PARKER, d. 1598

- Chancel floor, centre, against the sanctuary step.

- 85(W) x 140(L)~Worn, local damage (corners, sides).

- M.I. (9 lines) in capitals of equal size, at East end of a dark freestone slab; double-framed border and arrowhead decoration in corners; head to West.

- Jane Parker, d. 7 May 1598; daughter of William Dautrey, Esq.; and wife of William Parker, Gent.

131I Mural monument for William MICHELL, d. 1825

- South aisle, South wall, in South-West corner.

- 62(W) x 40(H)~Very good, rust patches, fading.

- M.I. (8 lines, engraved, black) on a white, unframed, trapezoidal panel below a simple straight cornice; signed (lower right): 'C.KING / TOT^m CT ROAD'.

- William Michell, ensign in the East India Company, d. Bengal 27 Jul 1825, aet 16.
