(139/1) HURSTPIERPOINT, Holy Trinity
Considering that the church (original dedication St. Lawrence) was rebuilt in 1843-5, by Sir Charles Barry, and that all monuments have been relocated, many ('hardly anything in it worth preserving, except the two old sound pillars' - Letter from Archdeacon to Churchwardens 18 Sep 1841 quoted in Church Guide) are in surprisingly good condition; for the original church see Gent's Mag 1806; William Hamper's drawings of the interior in 1799, copied by Lydia Hamper in 1845, see (SCM II 55); for views see BL Add. MS 5677 f.48; 5672 ff.28-30; for architectural history, see Nairn & Pevsner (541); for an external view from the South-East see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 83); the South chancel was originally used by the owners of nearby Danny for family burials and that space in the new church was allocated to William John Campion in lieu of the old space, with the new North chancel and vault allocated to Nathaniel Borrer; Horsfield (Sussex I 246-7) noted the medieval effigies from the Danny (South) chancel moved into Mr Campion's coachhouse; however, the new South chancel turned out to be too small a space for the Campions, so the families swapped leaving the Borrers with the South and the Campions with the new North chancel.

- 2 M.I. panels (engraved, filled) in grey marble, set portrait-wise and separated and framed in brown-veined alabaster; 3 fluted Doric pilasters; below, gadrooned border; flanking corbels in diamond form, with applied acanthus decoration; central corbel, a death's head; entablature with frieze of triglyphs and blank metopes; straight cornice; gilded, flaming lamps flank an achievement.
