(161) LEWES, St. Thomas a Becket, Cliffe

A 14th-century building - Nairn & Pevsner (553-4); the porch - a rare modern addition - was probably designed by Joseph Daw late in his life c.1752, see S. Berry (SAC 142 109); for a plan see SNQ (XIII 156); for a view of 1793 see Godfrey & Salzman (Pl. 100, from BL Add. MS 5676 f.88); the parish had c.101 families in 1717 and a population of 1113 in 1801; no monuments at Cliffe noted in Horsfield.


161A Mural monument for Robert BALDY, d. 1774

-  West porch, North wall, above head height.

-  80(W) x 210(H)~Very good.

-  In grey-veined marble; M.I. (engraved, centred, black) on a rectangular tablet; cornice and base mouldings; above, a broken scrolled pediment; urn in relief; below, floral decorated and another urn between brackets.

-  Robert Baldy, Esq., of Northumberland Street, London, d. 11 Jan 1774, aet 54; his niece, Elizabeth Lee, patron.


161B Mural monument for Susannah BULL, d. 1794

-  North aisle, East wall, at head height.

-  68(W) x 95(H)~Very good, faded.

-  M.I. (engraved, centred) on unframed pale cream marble panel; above, a straight entablature and a flute-patterned frieze; below, a brown base moulding in alabaster; curved apron with relief decoration of crossed ferns; signed (on scroll): 'W.ROGERSON. FECIT. LONDON'.

-  Susannah Bull, d. Lewes, d. 17 Mar 1794, aet 20, only daughter of John Thompson Bull, Esq., of Stockwell Hall, Essex, and Susannah, daughter of John Woodgate, late of Lewes.
