(181) NEWICK, St. Mary

West part of nave Norman, lengthened later and the chancel rebuilt 1886-7 - Nairn & Pevsner (571); the North Aisle was built in 1836 (Church Guide) and is the location of this set of monuments, commemorating three generations of an aristocratic family; the original position is unknown.


181A Mural monument for George VERNON, d. 1773, aged 1

-  A white oval marble plaque with a raised rim; M.I. (9 lines, engraved, black).

-  George Vernon, 23 Feb 1772 - 6 Mar 1773, second son of Hon. George Vernon and Lady Louisa Vernon.


181B Mural monument for George VERNON, d. 1762, aged 1

-  c.75(W) x 90(H)~Good.

-  A white marble plaque with an irregular moulded edge; curved scrolled top; M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black).

-  George Vernon, born 18 Nov 1761, died of measles, Sep[?] 1762; son of Hon. George Vernon and Hon. Louisa Vernon, daughter and heiress of Rt. Hon. Bussy, Lord Mansel.


181C Mural monument for Charlotte VERNON, d. 1770, aged 1

-  A white oval marble plaque; raised rim; M.I. (9 lines, engraved, black).

-  Charlotte Vernon, 2 May 1768 - 21 Mar 1770; second daughter of Hon. George Vernon and Lady Louisa Vernon.


181D Mural monument for Lady Barbara MANSEL, d. 1763

-  North aisle, North wall, towards East end, above head height.

-  110(W) x 180(H)~Good.

-  M.I. (8 lines, engraved, black) in upper 60% of a white rectangular marble panel; simple black marble frame; above, a broken, pointed pediment; below, 3 corbels; and an apron.

-  Lady Barbara Mansel, d. 12 Jun 1761, widow of Rt. Hon. Bussy, Lord Mansel.


181E Mural monument for [Louisa Barbara] Lady VERNON, d. 1786

-  North aisle, North wall, East end, above head height.

-  c.110(W) x 130(H)~Good.

-  M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black) on a white rectangular panel, set landscape-wise; dark grey marble frame; above, cornice and pointed pediment; below, apron with decoration of vines and ferns; 2 corbels with ornamental roundels.

-  L.B. Lady Vernon, d. 16 Feb 1786, aet 53; her husband, G. V., Lord Vernon; daughter of Bussy, Lord Mansel and Barbara, daughter to William, Earl of Jersey; her charitable virtue.
