(190) ORE, St. Helen

Reportedly fine but with poor chancels in 1724 (Ford 99); enlarged in 1821 by a new aisle with 200 seats - Horsfield (Sussex I 440-1); totally replaced in 1869 - Nairn & Pevsner (577); 190A was moved to the new building from the 'Old Parish Church', in 1882, as perhaps were others in this period; some backplates and corbels are, perhaps, replacements; Ore had c.25 families in 1724 and a population of 243 in 1801; now a suburb of Hastings.


190A Mural monument for James MURRAY, d. 1794

-  South aisle, South wall, towards East end, at head height.

-  89(W) x 83(H)~Excellent.

-  Black baseplate with pointed pediment and ornamental palmettes; M.I. (16 lines engraved and black) on a white rectangular panel with cornice and dropped ends; 2 small corbels; signed: 'VIDLER & Co. HASTINGS'.

-  General, the Hon. James Murray, of Beauport, Ore, 18 Jun 1794, aet 75; youngest son of Alexander, 4th Lord Elibank, of Scotland; his second wife, Anne, daughter of Abraham Whitham, Esq., d. 2 Aug 1824, aet 63; issue, Elizabeth-Mary d. 8 Apr 1785, aet 1; George d. in Feb 1794, infant; other issue unnamed.


190B Mural monument for Ann NORTH, d. 1801

-  West wall, at West end of South aisle, facing East, at head height.

-  68(W) x 63(H)~Excellent.

-  M.I. (7 lines, engraved and black) fills upper 60% of white marble rectangular panel; thin black baseplate; below, 2 tiny corbels.

-  Ann North d. 11 Aug 1801, aet 26; daughter of Fountain and Arabella North of Hampstead Heath, Middlesex.


190C Mural monument for Francis Frederick NORTH, d. 1821

-  Centre of West wall, facing East, to South of East window, high.

-  c.88(W) x c.74(H)~Excellent.

-  Very close to 190A in form; M.I. 6 lines; signed (lower right): 'W.WHITELAW. LONDON'.

-  Francis Frederick North, Esq., of Rougham Hall, Norfolk and of Hastings, d. 8 Oct 1821, aet 43.


190D Mural monument for Rev. Mitford PEACOCK, d. 1828

-  West wall, facing East, to South of East window, at head height.

-  124(W) x 90(H)~Very good; cracks (above).

-  M.I. (16 lines, engraved, black) on trapezoidal, unframed panel; 2 small black corbels; above, a cornice and a plain pointed pediment.

-  Rev. Mitford Peacock, Fellow of Corpus Christi, Cambridge, died Hastings, 20 May 1828, aet 27; eldest son of Rev. D.M. Peacock, rector of Great Stainton, Durham; his Christian virtues.


190E Mural monument for Fountayne NORTH, d. 1810

-  West wall, facing East, to North of East window, high.

-  90(W) x c.70(H)~Excellent.

-  M.I. (19 lines, engraved, black) on a white marble rectangular panel; substantial black slate base; below, 2 tiny corbels.

-  Fountayne North, Esq., of Rougham Hall, Norfolk, also of Hampstead Heath, Middlesex, died at Hastings, 21 Sep 1810, aet 62; his widow, Arabella, died at Weymouth, 8 Jan 1832 aet 78.


190F Mural monument for Rev. William and Elizabeth WHITEAR, d. 1804 and d. 1808

-  91(W) x 84(H)~Excellent.

-  Thin black baseplate; M.I. (11 lines, engraved, black) on white marble trapezoidal tablet; corbels decorated with guttae; pointed top; flanking, crossed ferns and decorative palmettes.

-  Rev. William Whitear, L.L.B., minister of Ore for 44 years, d. 8 Feb 1804, aet 66; his wife Elizabeth, d. Hastings 29 May 1808, aet 60.

-  68.5(W) x 52(H)~Very good; rust.

-  M.I. (18 lines, engraved, black) on an unframed white marble panel; 2 tiny black corbels.

-  Mary Whitham, died at Hastings, 13 Mar 1797, aet 73; widow of Abraham Whitham, Esq., diplomat (Majorca); issue - youngest son, Hugh-William Whitham, d. 26 Jul 1785, aet 23; second daughter, Mary, d. 2 Mar 1825, aet 75; third daughter, Susanna, d. 5 Mar 1830, aet 76; other son(s) unnamed.
