(192) OVINGDEAN, St. Wulfran

Norman - Nairn & Pevsner (577-8); West end reportedly unpaved in 1686 (Ford 37); condition tolerable in 1724 (Ford 139); re-floored in 1852 and in 1867 and ledgers relocated (see 192E, H and I); parish had 4 families in 1724 and a population of 85 in 1801.


192A Mural monument for Mary PALLISER, d. 1826

-  Loose in vestry cupboard.

-  62(W) x 39(H)~Good; local damage to left side.

-  M.I. (9 lines, engraved) on a rectangular white marble panel; engraved border.

-  Mary Ann Rachel Palliser, died at Brighton, 10 Dec 1826, aet 28; daughter of the late Sir Hugh Palliser Palliser, Bart.; patron her brother, unnamed, current Bart.


192B Mural monument for Catherine COOPER, d. 1816

-  Detached from South Tower wall, now in vestry cupboard.

-  49.5(W) x 75(H)~Good.

-  Unframed white oval marble plaque; M.I. (14 lines, engraved).

-  Catherine Cooper, d. 13 Feb 1816, aet 62; daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Jackson, formerly of Uckfield; and widow of William Cooper, Gent., late of Lewes.


192C The MARSHALL mural monument, d. 1776 etc.

-  Tower North wall, above head height.

-  152(W): H unknown~Very good.

-  As a temple facade, in shallow stone, flat on the wall; white with black frame; pointed pediment and urn in relief at very top; 2 narrow borders left and right; all supported by 2 corbels with paterae.

-  White marble on dark grey; pointed pediment over an unframed tablet; M.I. (10 lines, engraved, black); below, achievement; 2 fluted brackets.

-  Sir John Eamer, Knt., Colonel of the Royal East London Militia, died at Brighton, 29 Mar 1823, aet 73; his widow, Mary, d. 13 Aug 1842, aet 83.


192E Ledger for Elizabeth DEANE, d. 1819

-  South-East chapel floor, near South wall.

-  M.I. (engraved) in upper (W) 50% of a pale freestone slab; head to West.


192F Mural monument for Thomas Holles PAYNE, d. 1800

-  Nave South wall, East end, above head height.

-  100(W) x 87(H)~Very good.

-  Above, a cornice; M.I. (8 lines, engraved) on a white marble tablet; base mouldings; brackets with foliage and pointed bases; ornamental apron with dark grey skull.

-  Thomas Holles Payne Esq., d. 12 Feb 1800, aet 66; also, Sophia Elizabeth Beard, his executrix.


192G Mural monument for Martha KEMP, d. 1821

-  Nave, high over South door.

-  c.130(W); H unknown~Very good, faded.

-  Pointed pediment in black; no entablature; box-like pilasters; above, Greek key ornament in frieze; foliate corbels; M.I. (many lines, engraved) in upper 75% of a white tablet with a pointed top; below, ornamental black baseplate with escutcheon; unsigned.

-  Martha Kemp, d. 12 Feb 1821, aet 66; wife of Nathaniel Kemp, Esq., of Ovingdean.
